there is that element of Irish fandom, but there's also a big core of people who've gone to many many shit games and still turn up. It's unfair to tar them all with the same brush

Number None, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:23 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i don't fully share keane's predictable hatred here

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:25 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i know that, and to be honest in the greater scheme of things even my strawman irish supporter is hardly doing anything particularly wrong.

tell it to my arse (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:25 (fourteen years ago)

or even "wrong" at all.

tell it to my arse (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:25 (fourteen years ago)

football fans in general are idiots but rather the irish fans doing drunken singsongs with the spanish than a load of polish & russian reets kicking each others heads in

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:26 (fourteen years ago)

the latter is more interesting to watch imo, ha. nihilist jim.

tell it to my arse (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:26 (fourteen years ago)

xp keanes just butthurt after saipan...would have happened whether mcccarthy was there or not tbh...remember when he said he'd never be a pundit?

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:27 (fourteen years ago)

tell you what though lads, we may be out but we'll have a drink and a sing song at the next game and show everyone we're the best fans in the world...YOU'LL NEVER BEAT THE IRISH (repeat to fade)

Number None, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:29 (fourteen years ago)

ha yeah i had forgotten that xp

he is just too deranged to be a manager

recent teams who most desparately needed a tv crew in their midst = 2009 era sunderland with keane kicking over tactics boards, dioufy threatening to stab anton ferdinand, millions of random irish dudes hanging around to no purpose

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:30 (fourteen years ago)

Keane's not hating on the fans, he's hating on the bullshit "oh shure isn't it lovely to be here, never mind the sloppy passing and Paul Green in the side, shure maybe next time lads?" glossing over that inevitably goes on. (I haven't seen RTE's coverage yet but I imagine they'll be suitably brutal).

gyac, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:30 (fourteen years ago)

will ye have a big leprechaun hat

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:33 (fourteen years ago)

Roy Keane is a failed manager with a lot of grudges

Number None, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:35 (fourteen years ago)

a lot of grudges and no leprechaun hat

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:36 (fourteen years ago)

i'm wearing mine right now

Number None, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:37 (fourteen years ago)

He is, but he's right to say we should expect better...than Keith fucking Andrews and Paul fucking Green. He's 40 and of dubious fitness and he could probably still easily outclass our midfield.

gyac, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:38 (fourteen years ago)

i did find the shots of the irish and spanish fans together all singing with their arms round each other genuinely heartwarming.

Chris, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:38 (fourteen years ago)

what happened to james mcarthy? did he really have to miss the whole tournament

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:39 (fourteen years ago)

dad has cancer. Trap doesn't like him

Number None, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:40 (fourteen years ago)

his father has cancer iirc

gyac, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:40 (fourteen years ago)

           long

mcclean mcgeady coleman

mccarthy gibson

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:43 (fourteen years ago)

some actual speed >>>>>>>>> game lads

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:43 (fourteen years ago)

cox was toilet tonight btw

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:44 (fourteen years ago)

Keane is a fucking remedial moron. If he hates Ireland so much he shouldn't have signed every horrendous Irish also ran ever as a boss. And slated pundits forever until him and his wife needed a new kebab at burgerland in cork with lee sharpe, great guy, #keanebiogreference

ooooiiiioooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaoooooh un - bi - leevable! (LocalGarda), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:45 (fourteen years ago)

he doesn't fucking hate Ireland, he thinks we shouldn't be happy to roll in, play like shit, and make up the numbers. fairly obvious point, and one that needs making.

gyac, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:46 (fourteen years ago)

doubt he needs the cash, just wants the attention

when he was at sunderland he would always be giving his rote 'like i said to be honest with you i've got no time for people who ______' opinions on every subject not pertaining to sunderland

but as gyac says, his core point here is otm

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:48 (fourteen years ago)

it's actually not a point that needs making though. Maybe ten years ago

Number None, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:49 (fourteen years ago)

not with the emergence of darraghmac, but keane still has a bigger audience

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:51 (fourteen years ago)

I like your proposed formation though nakh

Number None, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:51 (fourteen years ago)

swap hoolihan for mcgeady

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:52 (fourteen years ago)

i find international football fans - the face-painting, wig-wearing, "just here for a laugh" mob - fairly cringeworthy, and ireland are pretty much the apotheosis of that. oh here's a drunk guy dressed up as a leprechaun who hasn't been to a football game since the last time he went to old trafford, what a guy.
― tell it to my arse (jim in glasgow)
a broad generalisation. a lot of irish fans get the boat over for matches in england.
― Michael B Higgins (Michael B)

Old Trafford is in England

Totally committed to the Corrs (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:53 (fourteen years ago)

Hoolihan is 30 tbf

Number None, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:54 (fourteen years ago)

theory being that mcgeady is ireland's most skilful player and might as well bring him into attacking mid

especially if his crossing is as iffy as regular ireland watchers attest

i just think ireland needs to get beyond game lads and gameladism

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:55 (fourteen years ago)

Trap is there for two more years and showed little inclination to change a losing formula after Croatia. The whole setup looked so amateurish, it really embarrassed me. (Actually, amateurish is insulting as roughly 100% of hurling matches I've watched have displayed more skill, better fitness and backbone. Retracted.) It can't be stated enough. Keane was as right as he was after the waffling about how "lucky" we were to get a 2-2 draw against the Dutch in Amsterdam, when we were leading that game 2-0 for 70 minutes and squandered two points.

gyac, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:56 (fourteen years ago)

*in 2000, for WC 2002 qualifying.

gyac, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:56 (fourteen years ago)

i just think ireland needs to get beyond game lads and gameladism

definitely

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:57 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah, there's no hope for the WC qualifiers whatsoever

Number None, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:57 (fourteen years ago)

yeah its gonna be grim

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:58 (fourteen years ago)

the clamour for hoolahan and andy reid before him is not the solution to gameladism

they are charlie adam type players who will hit one great 40 yard pass a match but end up with 55% passing accuracy

mcgeady is one of spartak moscow's best players, he has good control and a turn of pace, ireland don't have anyone like him

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:59 (fourteen years ago)

mcclean looks good but he is more of a krasic/valencia type who will power down the outside and get a cross in

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:02 (fourteen years ago)

prolonging the agony on the beeb....andrews has been our best player in this tourney (gulp)

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:19 (fourteen years ago)

howard webb being shit again

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:22 (fourteen years ago)

he doesn't fucking hate Ireland, he thinks we shouldn't be happy to roll in, play like shit, and make up the numbers. fairly obvious point, and one that needs making.

that's the keane trademark of total rubbish. he's a fucking moron who failed repeatedly as a manager and bought irish players incessantly to the point where it was funny. that was a point in the past but no way is it one now. this is one of the worst irish teams ever, and credit to trap for us being there, even with his wild contrarian decisions.

ooooiiiioooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaoooooh un - bi - leevable! (LocalGarda), Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:36 (fourteen years ago)

theory being that mcgeady is ireland's most skilful player and might as well bring him into attacking mid

mcgeady is just crap.

ooooiiiioooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaoooooh un - bi - leevable! (LocalGarda), Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:37 (fourteen years ago)

what is paul green then?

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:43 (fourteen years ago)

he's below any level but overall this side have underachieved hugely, even under trap. you look at how teams are prepared for a summer tournament and ireland look so fucking lethargic in this tournament. a goal conceded in first 3/4 mins of each half so far.

so different to the team that qualified. keith andrews the only player who stood up.

ooooiiiioooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaoooooh un - bi - leevable! (LocalGarda), Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:52 (fourteen years ago)

this is not one of the worst irish teams/squads ever, but even if it were we`ve still not seen anything like the best from the players trap can be bothered to run his stubbornly limited and inflexible rule over from his dvd selection

this attitude of "he got us here" sickens my hole. the attitude of "we`ve only got shit players" sickens my hole. hid arrogance, his contempt for irish football and his sheer retirement gig `couldnt give a fuck for ye` response to very valid criticism sicken my hole.

he`s doing huge damage to irish international football

irrational angst that makes me innocuously thingy (darraghmac), Friday, 15 June 2012 00:11 (fourteen years ago)

xp this is exactly the tem that qualified. any cunt can get draws in qualification by refusng to play football. come the contest proper you best have a bit more about you.

irrational angst that makes me innocuously thingy (darraghmac), Friday, 15 June 2012 00:14 (fourteen years ago)

it's all pointless

Number None, Friday, 15 June 2012 00:31 (fourteen years ago)

i`d rather my pointlessness try to play football, using footballers

irrational angst that makes me innocuously thingy (darraghmac), Friday, 15 June 2012 00:37 (fourteen years ago)

I agree with you, to an extent. Whatever preparation he's done has been dire. My point was that they're far less vigorous and fit even within the confines of trap's tactics.

It is a terrible pool of players though.

And I do think you have to credit trap with something for qualifying.

Would love to see what Harry would do with Ireland.
