are these new retina mbp bad boys in apple stores yet? I want to go to one and gawk

un® (dayo), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 10:28 (fourteen years ago)

Odd that the Apple UK website, which mostly clones the US site appearance, takes care to differentiate for the British market in some places but not in others. The new Macbook Pro for example gives the size in centimetres rather than inches and avoids American spellings, but the iOS 6 page, which shows off Siri's new ability to fetch sports scores, has the White Sox playing the Angels and notes "Siri knows baseball, basketball, football, soccer, and hockey." Got that? Not only football, but soccer too!

same here, utterly confounding

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 11:48 (fourteen years ago)

they didn't have the ret in the glasgow apple store yesterday fwiw

jed_, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 12:06 (fourteen years ago)

isn't there usually a lag of a few weeks after a new product announcement before it appears in stores? If they had to ship out the boxes and stock the stores so the new products would be there the day after the unveiling, there's no way Apple could prevent someone in the shipping chain leaking the details in advance, which Apple in known not to like.

Lee626, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 12:31 (fourteen years ago)

asked in Oxford Street today; they should have them on display by the end of the week, but it's going to be a few weeks until they're on sale

stet, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 12:40 (fourteen years ago)

Our pro customers are really important to us...don't worry as we're working on something really great for later next year.

Tim Cook

and yes that's a statement from this week and yes he really seems to mean 2013.

jed_, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 14:18 (fourteen years ago)

because really if they were that important to you you might have focussed some of the energies you used in your second ipad update into the mac pro, just saying.

jed_, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 14:23 (fourteen years ago)

I really hope there was a pause between "later" and "next year"

mh, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 14:26 (fourteen years ago)

i'm not even in the market for a pro but that's some bullshit.

jed_, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 14:27 (fourteen years ago)

markers, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 14:36 (fourteen years ago)

is "the word" that they're killing the 17" mbp or is there gonna a retina mbp coming in a few months?

Euler, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 14:37 (fourteen years ago)

it's dead

markers, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 14:37 (fourteen years ago)

i mean, they could bring it back, but it seems unlikely that they'd just get rid of the current model, wait a while, and then come out with a new one

markers, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 14:38 (fourteen years ago)

i heard it's totally dead too

the late great, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 14:43 (fourteen years ago)

I think they only people I know who ever owned one did video, and they switched to 15" a while ago

mh, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 14:44 (fourteen years ago)

i knew a pro photojournalist who lugged one around in a foam suitcase with his lenses and camera body to be able to do aperture-on-the-go and he was always complaining about it, he basically said anything he did "in the field" would have been fine on a 13" and anything that wasn't he preferred to view at home on a big display

i can't find the data i was looking at but i understand the percentage of mbp sales that were 17" were tiny

the late great, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 14:47 (fourteen years ago)

Retina display would be excellent for photo editing, imo.

mh, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 14:50 (fourteen years ago)

has anyone here ever been to wwdc?

markers, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 14:51 (fourteen years ago)

I love my 17 incher (that's what he said)

Euler, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 14:57 (fourteen years ago)

i'm a 17" man too, had no idea we were rare

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 15:01 (fourteen years ago)

i've been to wwdc

stet, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 15:18 (fourteen years ago)

markers, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 15:19 (fourteen years ago)

I've been several times.

Why are 17" screens still popular on Windows laptops but not Macs?

Lee626, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 16:14 (fourteen years ago)

ime windows people are more hardware-geeky and value minded than mac people

it's kinda like the question of why rainbow backlit keyboards are more popular on alienware computers than others

the late great, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 16:16 (fourteen years ago)

ime the 17" windows laptops are usually shit resolution

mh, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 16:26 (fourteen years ago)

can i get a rainbow backlit keyboard for my dell?

Impetuous hybrid (Matt P), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 16:48 (fourteen years ago)

My Lenovo Thinkpad (14") doesn't have a backlit keyboard, but it does have a single white LED light that shines down like a floodlight from the top of the screen. Not as good, but it beats darkness. And I do use my laptop in the dark....

ifixit teardown in, ram is not user upgradeable, HD is a big 'maybe'

un® (dayo), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 23:18 (fourteen years ago)

I mean, I guess it's not a big deal, the idea of a computer with parts you can replace yourself is probably dying out. but a retina mbp should cost a minimum of $2200 + $200 for RAM upgrade + $300 for applecare

un® (dayo), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 23:35 (fourteen years ago)

how much would user-replaceable ram have cost

brony ver (s1ocki), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 23:38 (fourteen years ago)

but a retina mbp should cost a minimum of $2200 + $200 for RAM upgrade

Just as a data point, on my MBP Retina order adding an additional 8GB RAM was $180.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 23:40 (fourteen years ago)

you got the discount double check didn't you? I checked through the normal store and it was $200. probably $180 for education people.

un® (dayo), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 23:40 (fourteen years ago)

they're called educators.

brony ver (s1ocki), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 23:41 (fourteen years ago)

8 GB of RAM turned my four year old mbp into a brand new machine

un® (dayo), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 23:41 (fourteen years ago)

correction s1ocki, the proper term is pedant

the late great, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 23:47 (fourteen years ago)

pedantgogy.

brony ver (s1ocki), Thursday, 14 June 2012 00:00 (fourteen years ago)

As a former Mac-repair guy I suppose I should feel miffed about all the non-user replaceable parts in the MBP Retina, but to be fair - since I paid the extra $ for AppleCare, I just gave it to Apple if there were any hardware issues. AppleCare is worth it: my current MBP (five years old now and VERY well-travelled) has a new motherboard, new keyboard lights, new battery, and new power adapter - all of which was covered. The only out-of-warranty issue I had to pay out of pocket for was a dead battery early this year. The only non-Apple work I did was replace the HD with a 750GB model and that's it.
