at the beginning i very vaguely recognised her but had to google her. it's p confusing, the characters could hardly be more different.

Super-gushy (in their words) Bill Simmons podcast today with LD...

Ok I'm officially enjoying the Gawker recaps more than the show. As insightful commentary on the show I'm pretty sure they're lacking, but how many recaps ever are that insightful? But just as an extended entertaining gawker running-gag/literary exercise with a set of tics and affectations, I find their consistency both comforting and hilarious.

finally saw this ep - the fight between hannah & marnie gave me so many knowing/been there lols, just the WORST kind of indirect argument where you argue about stupid surface things like they're SO meaningful but they're just placeholders for the real stuff you're mad about. and sooooooooo awesomely passive agressive.

I loved how as soon as you see the crowd she's reading to & she starts talking about the dudes internet dating username you're like, oh dude what have you done. And that beat where she's all..."...he, like...DIED...?" as though she was waiting for the audible gasp of sympathy.

So much perfect, familiar awkwardness. It's getting terrifyingly relatable too though, lol

lol dude who plays Adam is named Adam irl, and he IS basically his character - excellent casting

Actual young people are all watching on HBOGo or torrents.

Driver works on his roles on a couch in this apartment, and keeps to a strict regimen of exercise and eating well, which includes six eggs every morning, though he throws away four of the yolks. “It’s good for you, protein and all that,” he says. “I used to eat a whole chicken every day, for lunch. I did that for four years. But it got tiring — go to the store, buy it, eat it. It’s a mess.”

it might be in part the late hour, but this finale just destroyed me

I liked the soundtrack to during the wedding -- good calls for actual wedding reception-ish music. The ending made no sense at all to me. If you have lived in new york for even a momentary amount of time, and you are in a subway station, you know how to find out where you are. You look at the signs all over the subway station.

s.clover, Monday, 18 June 2012 04:11 (eleven years ago) link

I think that was a metaphor tbh

"Holy crap," I mutter, as he gently taps my area (silby), Monday, 18 June 2012 04:17 (eleven years ago) link

wait, so she feel asleep and when she woke up the train was stopped at a metaphor? writing!

s.clover, Monday, 18 June 2012 04:41 (eleven years ago) link

no silly it's like in lawrence of arabia when people are always like "who are you" and they mean "identify yourself" but what it really means is uh

I think it's about how he's gay I had a concept here

"Holy crap," I mutter, as he gently taps my area (silby), Monday, 18 June 2012 04:44 (eleven years ago) link

i haven't watched this episode yet but Lena Dunham said in an interview posted upthread (re. the programme "baggage") that her irl small baggage was that her sense of direction was so bad that she basically never knew where she was, often got confused and, as a result, was basically always late when meeting people which infuriated them.

jed_, Monday, 18 June 2012 11:45 (eleven years ago) link

dude who plays Adam is named Adam irl, and he IS basically his character

Except that he's an actor, and apparently good at his job?

"playing himself" doesn't pass the smell test with me talking about any actor - how would one know?

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Monday, 18 June 2012 14:07 (eleven years ago) link

yeah that's a red herring. dude has amazing screen presence.

jed_, Monday, 18 June 2012 15:21 (eleven years ago) link

Loved this episode.

-I know, and rich as fuck.

I love Adam. A lot.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 01:56 (eleven years ago) link

i'm crazy about that guy

jed_, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 02:32 (eleven years ago) link

I find it a little sad that he's by far the most enjoyable character to watch at this point.

Simon H., Tuesday, 19 June 2012 02:44 (eleven years ago) link

He's an amazing character!

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 02:48 (eleven years ago) link

stock manic pixie dream boy. seriously. replace him with Natalie Portman or whoever and modulate a bit of gender specific stuff, and you'll see it right away.

s.clover, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 03:19 (eleven years ago) link

groudbreaking. now talk about how there are no characters of color, and that they all have famous parents.

how did we get here how? (ytth), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 03:20 (eleven years ago) link

the first season is over, and there are the people that like the show, the people that don't like the show, and the people that just can't stop beating the same four or five drums.

how did we get here how? (ytth), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 03:22 (eleven years ago) link

I don't think the def of "manic pixie" allows for characters whose sex fantasies involve underage prostitutes.

Simon H., Tuesday, 19 June 2012 03:24 (eleven years ago) link

haven't you seen garden state?

how did we get here how? (ytth), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 03:33 (eleven years ago) link

for real? i thought manic pixie was a relatively new drum. i'm serious though. when i watch adam, i feel... objectified.

s.clover, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 03:38 (eleven years ago) link

uh. i don't think it's possible for there to be a male equivalent of the manic pixie dream girl.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 05:01 (eleven years ago) link

idk how people feel about her but Jessa is kind of amazing

Turangalila, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 06:09 (eleven years ago) link

Jessa's level of abandon honestly terrifies me.

Awesome episode. God I hope that gay dude doesn't move in with Hannah. That would be the worst fake household ever, them being fake nice to each other uuuuughh. Who is the guy that is his boyfriend? Iknow him from something, I'm sure of it.

Shoshanna is outstanding. In all ways.

"Everybody's a dumb whore!"

"Holy crap," I mutter, as he gently taps my area (silby), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 07:32 (eleven years ago) link

God I hope that gay dude doesn't move in with Hannah.

that guy is great but it would worry me that Girls would go down too much of a SATC road with that one. although the character is funnier than anyone who was ever on SATC.

jed_, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 09:59 (eleven years ago) link

oh he's great in passing. his zing fights with Marnie are the BEST

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 15:19 (eleven years ago) link

oh no, now there are gays in this.

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 15:28 (eleven years ago) link

I know! The title SPECIFICALLY says GIRLS.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 15:30 (eleven years ago) link

what does it say abt me that i thought adam sounded nuts & controlling in this ep & that hannah wd be right to tell him 2 take a long walk / short pier

littledotheyknow (D-40), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 18:08 (eleven years ago) link

I don't think you're wrong. He has a point about her chasing him like he was the Beatles, but it's a huge 180 from the lonewolfishness that informed the bulk of their relationshiop early on, even if he's not that way so much now.

honestly I think she'd be cool with it if it was her idea, or if he hadn't said it out loud to her face in the moment. you know? I think it's just that she wants more control over the decision, somehow. shrug.

but honestly he's a cool guy, he's real with her and her hanging onto her normal way of life is kind of lol since that's really not working out that well for her anyway.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 18:27 (eleven years ago) link

alllll of that being said, I get her too. I'd probably be similarly weirded out, even if part of me did want him to move in.

oy I'm overthinking now, I'll shut up.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 18:28 (eleven years ago) link

loved this show. bring on s2.

Sisig Steve (stevie), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 22:16 (eleven years ago) link

finale was probably the funniest of the season for me, show definitely got better overall as it went on, although i'm not really fully on board.

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 22:18 (eleven years ago) link
