GIRLS talk (the Lena Dunham thread)

We watched Tiny Furniture last night, and somehow I was sort of charmed by it in spite of my wife's OTM descrpition: "I had sex in a pipe. Then I went home and started writing this screenplay." I think she has an ear for dialogue and an ability to capture a certain subset of liberal arts college types very accurately that overcomes the myopically young, inexperienced and privileged story.

Like it's kind of thick to dramatically state that one-thing-I-know-is-I-don't-wanna-be-a-day-hostess when (1) you were a day hostess for about two weeks as far as I can tell, (2) you don't actually need a job and (3) no one actually wants to be a day hostess long term duh

But yeah I sort of liked it anyway.

So here's a theory about Adam. Back when "nerd" was a terrible thing, the subversive thing was to be the nerd. Now we're in the era of the "creep" (distinguished from the dot-com-millionaire nerd), and Adam is embracing his creep and is therefore the Fred Schneider of our age.

i think this Adam guy could pull Fred Schneider's lungs out through his mouth

Mayonnaise was the best part of this episode.

i liked the "waterbirth" line by that author.

Jessa's dismayed look as Kathryn points out she might not be happy

Marnie and Hannah's argument felt a lot like arguments I was having with a (former I guess) friend a couple months ago.

This show is doing so many things right.

I just watched it and was thinking that I'd never had a shouting fight with a friend like that! I've gotten into friend fights but more of the seethe for a while then talk it out kind.

I found the pacing of the fight weird and stilted? The constant one-shots didn't help, whole sequence felt needlessly choppy.

yes, the episodes lena directed herself flowed much better. i haven't loved a show this much for a long time but that was a poor episode imo.

Fight + mayo were too good to say "poor episode". Weaker than the most of the series.

Adam getting the mayo from the fridge and saying not to disturbe him for ten minutes

I had a shouting match like that with a friend who is like a sister but it was on the phone - she even called me a bitch and hung up on me! It was harsh times for both of us, and neither of us are actually birches. Everything was sorted out within a eek but whoa.

i came to this cold and spent the first episode wondering where Dunham had found such an amazing, subtle and brave actress to play Hannah. I have to say i was slightly overwhelmed to find out who was playing Hannah. I'd be envious of her amazing multi-talent if i didn't love her so much already. by the time i got to episode two basically i could forgive her anything for that amazing interview scene with the rape joke which i was still laughing at in bed that night. her acting in that scene tips the whole thing off the scale. she's amazing.

ep 2 was the best of the season by a lot imo
these last 2 eps have been bad
i think id prefer if it cared less abt character arcs & had less thru-plotlines

I usually don't do this but I'm gonna have to drop a "rong" on this

Didn't like the first 2 eps much tbh, and this last one was just OK. Rest has been good-to-great.

eh im willing to concede it's more on me y i didnt like them but..

the rich dude freak out was really cloying
adam's street art apology thing @ the end was so rank

adam's getting the mayo was maybe a high pt in the latest ep cuz they let it be a subtle thing!

something about the editing & pacing of the roommate argument scene reminded me of this

I kind of hated the opening scene with the girl getting the book published. Something rlly backbitingly ugh, ny publishing, about the whole thing. Makes me never want to live in ny. So catty and gross

this episode felt a little schematic to me in terms of hannah, marnie and jessa all having classic twentysomething time to grow up moments, but the show is at least right about those moments. also exchange between hannah and jerky guy about the triviality of her work was note-perfect.

i don't know; the part about being unable to help being a wench to someone whose professional success you envy rang true, not just to ny publishing. at least hannah copped to it later in the episode.

thought this ep was a bit too transparently setting up conflicts to be resolved in the finale, not that it was poorly executed but imo it lacked lighter moments & felt a bit rushed or heavy

i feel like one of the things dunham is interested in is anatomizing "cattiness."

xp yeah there were definitely less laughs than average in this episode

my fav part of the episode was jessa's intrigue at weed dad's wife's description of her dreams in which she murders and eats her

I LOVE THAT GUY SO MUCH

he is a genius of getting under my skin. loved his trite monologue of worthy subjects for writing, culminating in death of course.

ya that was amazing

have had a version of that conversation with a dude, more than once

I know this probably goes without saying but I think it's so important and amazing and brave of LD for showing herself as she is in nude scenes. Every single time that happens I'm surprised and hankful for her for doing this. In an ideal world that wouldn't be so remarkable but it is and it's awesome.

x-post - I still haven't watched TF but I know he's in it a lot and I should really get on that because he cracks me up in every scene he's in.

lena dunham's use of her body on this show and in tiny furniture is an amazing thing

Even if I didn't love this show for a whole host of other reasons it would still be important for that alone imo.
