"I was just trying to be free"

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 20:14 (fourteen years ago)

this ep was more traditional-TV than other eps but lots of good, interesting moments anyway
i realized that am watching this show more as a writer than usual, it's just fascinating that way

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 20:17 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i feel that. like attention to its tone & continuity, &c. i wonder if it's the knowledge that it's like the auteurial vision of LD. am super impressed w/the plotting between episodes, they're very neatly cohesive as single eps but everything's moved on a lot.

blossom smulch (schlump), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 20:32 (fourteen years ago)

This episode made CO'D seem funny and The Vaccines seem vaguely uplifting - which is some next level televisual alchemy, rilly.

Stevie T, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 20:43 (fourteen years ago)

The skeevy guy in the bar was a bit OTT but I liked how they wrote Jessa and Marnie from two opposite poles; Marnie pining for a boyfriend, esp an "important" one and Jessa not wanting anything to do with someone like that. The dude freaking about his rug did crack me up, though.

"Well, maybe you shouldn't invite 20 year old girls so as to wine them up on the floor, then, huh?"

Love Max Ophüls of us all (Michael White), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 21:17 (fourteen years ago)

serious lols at Jessa being all "Oh hey there" she thought it was the old dude at the bar that bought them the drinks and then "ugh rly" with the Chris O Dowd reveal.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 21:19 (fourteen years ago)

lol yes. also in being totally bored by the three-way but into kissing marnie.

blossom smulch (schlump), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 21:27 (fourteen years ago)

It all still seems very consequence free and I don't care anything about the individual characters, but I still really like this show which I think is a testament to the quality of the writing and acting.

All kinds of heinous things, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 05:50 (fourteen years ago)

"Done."

s.clover, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 05:56 (fourteen years ago)

Ok I was a bit harsh upthread. This show is significantly better than How To Make It In America. Basically because Adam and Jessa are engaging actors.

s.clover, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 06:00 (fourteen years ago)

But Adam as a character is now like 90x too much. On the other hand, he's drawn probably as broadly as most female love interests on "guy" shows. Gawker's hated roundup nailed it describing him as a sort of manic pixie dream guy. Which is, I suppose, interesting and important in a sense, or at least new. But its certainly not honest, if that was ever posed.

s.clover, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 06:14 (fourteen years ago)

or maybe it's not new, now that I think about it. it's like 2/3 of johnny depp's career, even.

s.clover, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 06:17 (fourteen years ago)

y u still reading gawker's shit? also don't think he's manic pixie dream guy at all

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 06:30 (fourteen years ago)

i dunno, i think adam's quite honestly drawn. i've known people like him: proudly unsocialized, driven, idealistic, gifted, narcissistic, given to wild mood swings and whimsical decision-making. the difficulties of artistic collaboration with people of that sort struck home. anway, great episode overall:

"Come on! Charlie's in the bushes! Charlie's in the bushes, come on!"

Adam trying to put the ice cream cone on the kitchen shelf

"You've come this far, wash your forehead!"

"You really look really gorgeous."
"I've never been this miserable in my life."
"It's totally working."

"It doesn't make sense to get out of the shower now. There's pee on you."

mashups (shudder)

"All right, now let's go fuck."

I know Chris O'Dowd from

a) Bridesmaids
b) Friends with Kids

His accent in b) was similarly tortured.

@BretEastonEllis Your work probably inspired like 1/2 my conceptions of sex and romance. It's DEFINITELY why I like Odeon #thankyou

shipl.de.al (some dude), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 16:18 (fourteen years ago)

He's been tweeting raves about Girls.

Odd Spice (Eazy), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 16:19 (fourteen years ago)

uh oh

pity about Twitter enabling public asskissing, they shd do this at parties.

World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 16:21 (fourteen years ago)

dunno the internet has survived has survived endless snarky bullshit it can probably survive this

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 16:27 (fourteen years ago)

I could care less how public the asskissing is but this reads exactly and terrifyingly like Hannah. I know I shouldn't be surprised but it's a bit dispiriting.

Love Max Ophüls of us all (Michael White), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 16:30 (fourteen years ago)

Er, 'couldn't'

Love Max Ophüls of us all (Michael White), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 16:30 (fourteen years ago)

Its a little horrifying really, unless there are a whole bunch of BEE novels that I have never heard of which are significantly different w/r/t sex and romance from the ones that I am familiar with. Alternately, she could just be talking about the Less Than Zero film? In which case, cool cool.

s.clover, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 16:40 (fourteen years ago)

it could also be a joke

We watched Tiny Furniture last night, and somehow I was sort of charmed by it in spite of my wife's OTM descrpition: "I had sex in a pipe. Then I went home and started writing this screenplay." I think she has an ear for dialogue and an ability to capture a certain subset of liberal arts college types very accurately that overcomes the myopically young, inexperienced and privileged story.

this guy's a gangsta? his real name's mittens. (Hurting 2), Sunday, 10 June 2012 02:12 (thirteen years ago)

Like it's kind of thick to dramatically state that one-thing-I-know-is-I-don't-wanna-be-a-day-hostess when (1) you were a day hostess for about two weeks as far as I can tell, (2) you don't actually need a job and (3) no one actually wants to be a day hostess long term duh

this guy's a gangsta? his real name's mittens. (Hurting 2), Sunday, 10 June 2012 02:15 (thirteen years ago)

But yeah I sort of liked it anyway.

So here's a theory about Adam. Back when "nerd" was a terrible thing, the subversive thing was to be the nerd. Now we're in the era of the "creep" (distinguished from the dot-com-millionaire nerd), and Adam is embracing his creep and is therefore the Fred Schneider of our age.

Odd Spice (Eazy), Sunday, 10 June 2012 05:33 (thirteen years ago)

this world is made up / of creeps and assholes
and given the choice / i'd rather be with the assholes

contenderizer, Sunday, 10 June 2012 05:54 (thirteen years ago)

i think this Adam guy could pull Fred Schneider's lungs out through his mouth

World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 10 June 2012 07:21 (thirteen years ago)

looks like my dad

contenderizer, Sunday, 10 June 2012 20:09 (thirteen years ago)

Mayonnaise was the best part of this episode.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Monday, 11 June 2012 03:46 (thirteen years ago)

i liked the "waterbirth" line by that author.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Monday, 11 June 2012 03:46 (thirteen years ago)

Jessa's dismayed look as Kathryn points out she might not be happy

Marnie and Hannah's argument felt a lot like arguments I was having with a (former I guess) friend a couple months ago.

This show is doing so many things right.

"Holy crap," I mutter, as he gently taps my area (silby), Monday, 11 June 2012 04:57 (thirteen years ago)

about time that jessa girl got a stern talking to

“Argh!” I cry. But I really don’t care. (forksclovetofu), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:38 (thirteen years ago)

also major lols at Christopher Moltisanti as a shaggy-haired Oberlin writing prof

"Holy crap," I mutter, as he gently taps my area (silby), Monday, 11 June 2012 20:10 (thirteen years ago)

ugh friend fights :( that was pretty dead on

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Monday, 11 June 2012 22:55 (thirteen years ago)

I just watched it and was thinking that I'd never had a shouting fight with a friend like that! I've gotten into friend fights but more of the seethe for a while then talk it out kind.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Monday, 11 June 2012 23:29 (thirteen years ago)

I found the pacing of the fight weird and stilted? The constant one-shots didn't help, whole sequence felt needlessly choppy.

Simon H., Monday, 11 June 2012 23:48 (thirteen years ago)

yes, the episodes lena directed herself flowed much better. i haven't loved a show this much for a long time but that was a poor episode imo.

jed_, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 00:11 (thirteen years ago)

Fight + mayo were too good to say "poor episode". Weaker than the most of the series.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 00:12 (thirteen years ago)

what was mayo?

jed_, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 00:23 (thirteen years ago)

Adam getting the mayo from the fridge and saying not to disturbe him for ten minutes

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 00:25 (thirteen years ago)

haha. i think i missed that bit.

jed_, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 00:38 (thirteen years ago)

I had a shouting match like that with a friend who is like a sister but it was on the phone - she even called me a bitch and hung up on me! It was harsh times for both of us, and neither of us are actually birches. Everything was sorted out within a eek but whoa.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 00:43 (thirteen years ago)

birches!
