Ideas for ILX

Personally, I don't think people should be able to post if they've not read the whole thread over. That just leads to same things being repeated again and again.

i think there should be a "like" feature attached to posts, but the results of its use would not be viewable anywhere. instead, at the end of every year, a collection would be taken up for the person who had received the most likes (without revealing their name), and the money so gathered would be used to buy and send them a shitload of candy.

I think a like feature would be great. But not hidden. And it could be OTM instead of like.

However I could see an outcry because of the fackbookication of ilx. Damn you naysayers.

what about a function whereby users can 'flag' a post that they enjoy

I'd like to see an option to hide the 'Flag Post' link. I've clicked on it several times by accident, especially when surfing on my mobile. If nothing else if I were to flag a post, which I haven't done so far, then it would give me a bit of breathing space before doing so.

I really think there should be some functionality that prevents people from posting until they've read an entire thread. Perhaps aided by the combination of some sort of camera that scans eye movements and an end-of-thread quiz which, upon its successful completion, will provide posters with the Captcha code which will allow them to post to the thread.

But I mostly want to stress that people should be reading entire threads before posting in order to cut down on repetition.

you know how things are funny when repeated a few times, and then dreadfully unfunny for a long while before ultimately reaching a sublime state beyond such concerns? (eg markers and 'i miss you')

hmmm...actually numbering posts could be really handy! The easiest-to-follow comment sections out there are the ones with numbered comments. I don't know what it would do to the nature of the ongoing ILX cocktail party if threads had a bunch of "@23" or "re: 497" stuff, though.

A link to a quoted post could be nice. It could tie in with my idea of links (buttons?) for quoting and formatting like we have on Zing. My right pinky sucks at typing brackets and stupid Chrome doesn't have a BBCode extension.

on firefox, maybe others, you can just drag the "Permalink" link to the "Add A Post" box

Not sure if this idea has been posted yet, but on the search results screen, it would be cool if it also listed the total number of answers for each thread. it could come in handy when a specific topic (e.g., james brown) has many threads and you're wondering which one is the "main" thread.

I find it helpful to open a bunch of them and look at the tone and content of the discussion in those instances

I hate to be negative, but I would like an ability to hide specific threads. I don't know if it's feasible at all, just throwing the idea out there.

what if poll closing dates didnt turn red until x hours/days before

could "show images" be on-page rather than or, in addition to, being in preferences? i shift between the two very regularly either image or youtube-heavy threads. maybe others do, too?

flopson suggested this some time back and I still think this would be massively handy, if it is at all easily done.

Yeah zing not having search, or the random function, is slightly frustrating for me. I use random when I'm bored but thats usually when i'm in bed and thus, using my iphone :( I know stet explained something on the zingthread as to why its not there but I forget now.

I thought of one this morning: if the default search results ordering option was "newest first" rather than "most relevant first". I dunno, I guess there could be some argument for the way it is, but that's not how I use search.

being able to hide threads from boards we don't care about (like, I really don't give a hoot about cricket, NFL, baseball etc) would be awesome.

ah i didn't know about that, but strangely I must have seen it before because all the sports threads are unticked and still I'm sure I get a lot of them appearing in my feed. Maybe not?

I get sports threads appearing in my feed on Mobile Device Interface sometimes, but not when I'm ilxing on a computer.

You can customise SNA on Zing -- just swipe right to left on any board you want to remove, and it'll hide on SNA too.

Still want to be able to page people to threads, by saying @stet what do you think? or something.
