Y'know, that still of the bird-woman in Freaks reminded me of an old question. What the hell was supposed to have happened to that lady? Like, I know the freaks fell upon her and did terrible things to deform her. But feathers? Huh?

mystery freak transformation powers, don't think there's a real-world explanation

the disturbing mysteriousness of her fate is what tips freaks from weird borderline thriller over into straight-up horror imo

She was hit by a tree, the freaks fell upon her and further messed her up. She's brain-damaged and deformed because her skeleton healed all wrong, the duck costume is a costume and further humiliation. At least that's how I read it.

It's fun scrolling through these backwards and seeing how many stills it takes to guess (or not guess, as the case may be) each film.

seeing those stills reminds me what a revelation the 2003 DVD release of eraserhead was, coming after almost two decades of watching grainy VHS tapes where large parts of the film were barely visible. have to admit there was some charm in those grimy industrial viewing experiences, like a half remembered dream or punk flyer xeroxed one too many times. but still a stunning film when it's cleaned up for church service.

an australian blu-ray just came out apparently?

^ i had not heard abt the Australian blu-ray, tho i totally agree w/ you abt the relative merits of lo-fi grainy film vs. cleaned-up DVD versions of Eraserhead. The crude, washed-out quality of the film in its early cheap VHS incarnations def had an atmospheric quality that suited the film, though there are really great designerly aspects of Lynch's photography which are much better served by recent hi-def upgrades.

btw, E3, I have been listening to the Prader Willie tracks while I edited the latest round (totally dig it btw - actually I would have totally bought your records if I'd run across them back in the days when I was into Jessamine, Flying Saucer Attack & what not). hopefully the tunes are helping me conjure untold levels of EEEEEEVIL herein.
