WTF with Marc Maron (it's a podcast)

I'm about halfway through it and I'm enjoying the conversation.

Wow, I don't really follow Chelsea Handler at all, but I was shocked to see that she was only a year older than me. She has the wrecked voice of a 47 year-old that smokes constantly.

i thought the chelsea handler convo was great! she basically turned the tables on him.

haha yeah i kinda had the same reaction (she's a year older than me, too). tbf i figured she was a 42 year old who takes pretty dece care of herself.

just the thought of her makes me IA, I couldn't take a whole interview

I'm only ten minutes into her interview and she sounds like an awful person so far. Her dismissive, "is this your main source of income" to Marc re: the podcast was pretty awful.

Like I said, I'm just getting into it, but it doesn't read that way at all so far.

very small doses with that one, for me. four minutes of her monologue once a week or so and i'm like ok igi.

okay, I guess you can start to figure out her being mean to Marc is her "thing" when she says, "you do understand what sex is, right?". but she still sounds pretty awful to me.

the rick shapiro interview was old school WTF. some stand up i've never heard of being semi-pissed at Maron and talking about a bodybuilder mouth-raping him.

I love the WTF episodes with truly big-time comedians (Russell Peters, Patton Oswalt, Handler) and Maron's combination of envy and judgment. The Handler one made for such an enjoyably tense interview because it was clear that she hadn't heard the podcast and didn't know how it worked.

Did anyone here listen to that new Marc and Tom ep? I was wondering what maron said about his phone call with Jon stewart

Stewart basically told Maron that Maron had really been a dick to Stewart back in the day & he'd rather not go on the show. But he's welcome to grab a coffee anytime.

ie you don't get to work this out on your show. talk to me in person, like a grownup & we'll see what happens.

can't blame him. maron has that "well if I'm sorry that makes it okay" thing that only goes so far.

...there was also the conclusion drawn that just because you are ready to apologize doesn't mean the other person is ready to forgive. Scharpling made noises of complete understanding and didn't mention PF Tompkins by name, but it was pretty clear that he knew what Maron was talking about.

I think I just really love hearing Jack so relaxed, laughing, just having a kind of easy conversation. It's not terribly hard hitting but I dig it

Loved the Donnell ep

Scharpling and Tompkins apparently had a huge falling out over a project they were working on, Tompkins did online friendship breakup (Twitter blockage, unfriending etc.), Tompkins has been unreceptive to attempts to reconcile, neither of them mention the other anymore and do not speak of the other to mutual friends (Jen Kirkman and John Hodgman being the best known). It's not something either of them talks about publicly, and Scharpling gets mad when "fans" speculate about it.

It took him about 40 minutes before he got to "who are your guys?"

Really like this interview! I'm neither here nor there on Jack White-as-celebrity most days, but wtkiw him on a Monday afternoon at Third Man.

Thanks for the Scharpling/Tompkins explanation. I just Googled it and discovered - though this shouldn't be any kind of surprise, I realize - that comedy message boards are even more intense and depressing than regular messageboards.

Even though was mostly surface stuff, I enjoyed the Brian Regan interview. Seems like a naturally funny dude who really genuinely likes what he does.

On the one hand I like him, he seems p cool...but there's something about him that's annoying me and I can't quite put my finger on it yet. Or I'm just in a grumpy Monday mood

I gave up on Duplass halfway through. Nice guy, but seemed like he and Marc were having the most boring conversation ever between two guys who have no real interest in talking to each other.

don't really know anything about marc maron, but i heard him interviewed on NPR last friday (or maybe it was thursday, thereabouts). maybe a bad interview/day, but it was horrible. any MM fans hear it? is it a fair representation of his style?

I didn't even know he was on. Was it a Fresh Air joint?

i don't think so? i'm not a regular enough NPR listener to say for sure.

I think I'll check back over this thread and see if there are any good eps. The two or three shows I tried to get through were so depressing though.

the best advice is honestly to cherrypick the ones that sound good/tolerable from this 900 post thread (if they're freely available, i dont even know). & if you h8 those, it's just not ur thing
