Just finished a first listen to the soundtrack release for Season 2, and I'm glad to be able to say it's much better than the half-assed, cheapish sound design droney junk Djawadi provided for season 1. (I know, he was hired at the last minute so time constraints etc and yes he did come up with a damn catchy Main Title). This time there are some real signs of compositional life as he puts his main theme through a number of highly contrasting variations, and the instrumentation feels much less like something you'd hear over an early edition of Baldur's Gate. I still wish they hadn't hired someone from the Hans Zimmer stable though. Christian Henson would've been so awesome on this project based on what he did for Black Death. Anyway, season 2 CD is solidly worth hearing though nowhere near great.

I didn't even know they released soundtrack albums for this.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Friday, 25 May 2012 19:53 (fourteen years ago)

the theme song is the best

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Friday, 25 May 2012 20:39 (fourteen years ago)

I can't tell if he rerecorded a more organic (less synthetic) version of the theme song for the S2 CD or if it just sounds better to me bcuz the subsequent tracks are better.

for those of you that don't frequent the blue oyster cult thread, BOC is currently using the game of thrones title theme as their "taking the stage" music

I get the theme song to this show stuck in my head for days at a time. It's really starting to annoy me.

Oh by the way, the CD includes 'Rains of Castermere' performed by popular indie recording artist The National. (but written by show composer Djawadi)

It plays on a constant loop in my head when I am reading the books.

The National track is actually pretty nice.

Yeah I really, really wanted to hate it, but it was actually not bad.

would totally buy a comp of self-serious indie bands doing all the big songs from the books. Though I guess there's prob not enough w/ lyrics for more than an EP.

Clay, Saturday, 26 May 2012 04:13 (fourteen years ago)

Berninger's baritone suits the tone particularly well, imo. I don't think I'd want to hear, say, Of Montreal's take.

Simon H., Saturday, 26 May 2012 04:23 (fourteen years ago)

I'd hear of Montreal do the "a bear, a bear, a bear" one maybe!

Clay, Saturday, 26 May 2012 04:48 (fourteen years ago)

ha i was gonna ask who to play the bear and the maiden fair

Theon is played by Lily Allen's brother, who is also the subject of that song.

and yet it still felt anticlimactic. What gives?

jump them into a gang - into the absurd (forksclovetofu), Monday, 28 May 2012 03:08 (fourteen years ago)

I think had Cersei killed her kid and herself and were left dead on the throne, it probably wouldn't have felt that way. I guess nobody of note died in that battle (is Stannis still alive, then?), and maybe that's what I was expecting. It seems to have resolved the larger Stannis season arc by, largely, leaving everything "as it was".

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Monday, 28 May 2012 03:22 (fourteen years ago)

it thought Tyrion died?!
