yeah, i had an awful run today and it made worry about this summer. i just started running semi-regularly last fall, after it cooled down a bit and temps were generally between 45-65. today it was only 82 or so, but really fucking humid, and i exhausted myself after only a few miles. had to walk twice, and then cut my route short. :(

Go out early. During marathon training, for long runs I'll get up 4-4:30 just to beat the heat.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 22:26 (fourteen years ago)
Still, it's going to suck sometimes.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 22:28 (fourteen years ago)
i might rather be murdered than run at 4 in the am
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 22:30 (fourteen years ago)
yeah, that's going to be my obstacle too.
― Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 22:42 (fourteen years ago)
i might rather be murdered than run at 4 in the am --lag∞n
Haha. For a while I was exercising in the am, and then I had to travel for a week and couldn't, and ever since then I havent been able to do it. And I hate exercising in the evenings, so this has evened out to close-to-never...
― rayuela, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 23:27 (fourteen years ago)
admittedly our hot isn't as hot as your hot but i way prefer running in the summer heat to having to psyche myself up to run in the miserably pissy rain or grim winter cold
― kanye kardashian (lex pretend), Thursday, 24 May 2012 05:54 (fourteen years ago)
I like a midpoint I guess. A sunny winter morning can be really nice (and even hot once you have ran a bit.)
It's the brightness I love the most about running at this time of year, nice city sunsets too.

i think i am skipping a run on my schedule this week because i just took 2 days off. i was more tired after work than i have ever been yesterday and got in at 7:30. i think i'll be ok though because it's only a 15 min run, i'll do the 20 min and 45 min ones. i have been 100% so far though!
― kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Thursday, 24 May 2012 11:38 (fourteen years ago)
I woke up at 5 AM to run this morning. Never fun, but was necessary today.
― Jeff, Thursday, 24 May 2012 11:46 (fourteen years ago)
it was huuuuuumid the last 2 runs. just did 45 min at 11:24 pace (calculated distance w/ gmap-pedometer). i am salt-encrusted again. i stopped twice to drink from the water fountain but near the end my ears were hurting and it felt like my head was being squeezed. doesn't that mean dehydration? or is that my very own symptom of nothing?
― kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Sunday, 27 May 2012 00:57 (fourteen years ago)
our group run on monday is 2 mile tempo run. i don't think i can keep up my goal of a 29 min 5k pace for 2 miles, sadly. it's a 9:21 mile. maybe. so slow!
― kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Sunday, 27 May 2012 00:58 (fourteen years ago)
i ran it in 19:37, it was like 93º and sunny at 6:45 pm and i stopped to drink water at 1.5 miles

well done harbl! glad that these group runs are working out for you

to be clear that was 2 miles NOT the 5k lol

sometimes after a run i feel light headed and a bit dizzy as soon as i stop, even if i cool down. never had the ears hurting though.
i see many running sites recommend having and alternating between two pairs of running shoes. do yall do that? i've ended up with a zappos credit, and while i would rather have the $$, i suppose i could use it on a second pair of running shoes.
― rayuela, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 16:48 (fourteen years ago)
Sometimes ears hurt cos of BLOOD HAMMERING AWAY IN YR HEAD, might be some sort of cooling thing, I dunno
I don't get the alternating shoes thing unless it's to let your body recover if one pair of shoes is affecting your biomechanics in a different way to your normal shoes (e.g. transitioning gradually into minimal running shoes from very cushioned ones). I can't see any point in getting two pairs the same unless you do a lot of running in the wet or in the mud, and then you might want to have a spare dry pair. I don't think that the shoes themselves need to rest or recover from running though.
― You can do it Sun Myung Moon (NickB), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 21:55 (fourteen years ago)
i think they mean 2 totally different ones because it supposedly prevents repetitive stress injury, which i guess makes enough sense and wouldn't necessarily cost you any more in the long run because you would be halving the wear on each pair but i'm not about to buy another pair of shoes myself
― kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 22:01 (fourteen years ago)
Hmm, I can kind of see the sense in that but I would personally recommend sticking the ones that give you rsi straight in the dumper ;)
In my own quest to re-learn how to run, I found this great article on proper running technique:http://www.scienceofrunning.com/2010/08/how-to-run-running-with-proper.html
It's written slightly stilted sports scientist language but I've found both that and similar articles on running form on that one blog totally fascinating and they've really helped my running. It's weird, but I've never really seen that stuff spelled out in that way before, even though I've read a bunch of running books over the years.
― You can do it Sun Myung Moon (NickB), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 22:34 (fourteen years ago)
This is the dumbest hobby, like it is boring and painful and when I am running I basically don't enjoy it at all, and yet right now I am all "FOUR HOURS TILL I CAN RUN HURRY UPPP TIME"
― Gravel Puzzleworth, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 14:56 (fourteen years ago)
I concur.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 15:19 (fourteen years ago)
Ah see, that's why you gotta do it first thing
― poxen, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 15:39 (fourteen years ago)
5k tomorrow and I think I may actually be uninjured and in decent enough shape to actually push it. Need sub 22:43 to PR.
― Jeff, Saturday, 2 June 2012 22:38 (fourteen years ago)
Did 6 miles on Thursday and it felt great. Find Nike plus or I guess any self-timing tempts you into ignoring distance in favour of pace. Last few weeks I had been smashing my quickest times, but when I focussed on distance and slowed down things got way better.
― ooooiiiioooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaoooooh un - bi - leevable! (LocalGarda), Saturday, 2 June 2012 23:09 (fourteen years ago)
5K done, 21:44. A PR by 59 seconds. Didn't expect this, but I suspect that the course was a little short.
― Jeff, Sunday, 3 June 2012 18:25 (fourteen years ago)
Felt good the whole time. Maybe I should have pushed it more. I wonder if I can go sub 20 now. I still sort of hate 5k's though.
― Jeff, Sunday, 3 June 2012 19:27 (fourteen years ago)
that's pretty fast imo. i just ran 4.5 miles in 50 min, which is about 11:06/mile. i was trying to slow down more though. i went fast the last 5 min because this is really getting easier, also it's not nearly as hot or humid this week.
― kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Sunday, 3 June 2012 23:57 (fourteen years ago)
ran almost 5 miles today! which is nothing for most of you, i'm sure, but for me was a new record. running at about a 7:45 pace, and making good progress toward my goal to get to 6 miles at a 7:30 pace sometime this summer.
― Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 00:03 (fourteen years ago)
to balance that with disappointment, though, the other day i decided to run a mile and see how fast i could do it, figuring i could probably bust out a 5:45 mile or something. i was only able to do 6:30. :-/ although it must be said that i felt the need to shit my pants for the entire mile, so that might have slowed me down.
― Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 00:04 (fourteen years ago)
how do you shitheads go so fast? we did intervals at running group yesterday. i was trying really hard to make the last one faster than the first like you are supposed to, but to do that i had to go pretty slow. i ran the last one in 4:30 and it was 800 meters :(
― kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 00:09 (fourteen years ago)
you are boys but it's not fair
― kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 00:10 (fourteen years ago)
i'm extremely frail, so i guess running is the one thing i'm supposedly "built" for, athletically. and even then, it's taken me about 9 months of running to be able to keep that pace up for more than a few miles at a time.
― Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 00:17 (fourteen years ago)
ok. i have only been running consistently since april so i will work on it. i am not frail i'm pretty substantial. but i am kind of giraffe-like. running has been helping me shed some of my commuting pounds i think. i mean i weigh the same but i am skinnier. it's working!
― kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 00:19 (fourteen years ago)
ha yeah zs u r fast i cannot run 5 miles like that
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 05:20 (fourteen years ago)
I ran my first 5k in 2009 in just under 28 minutes. Since then I've just ran a lot and steadily improved, dropping 6 minutes. I've also become ZS like frail, and that seems to have helped my speed.
But I quickly break and slow down after shorter distances. Hence my bad half/full marathon times.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 11:58 (fourteen years ago)
Sometimes I like to put my 5k time into the McMillan equivalent performance calculator (http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/site/calculator) to see that it thinks I can run a 3:30 marathon. Then I cry myself to sleep.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 12:02 (fourteen years ago)
Well, it's all relative. The 2 people that got me into running here are so fast that I can't run with them. One of them just ran a 10 mile race at a sub-7:00 pace, and the other is gearing up for a marathon. Maybe in a few years...
― Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 12:22 (fourteen years ago)
Do it!

Fun/interesting thread, though the imperial units are a bit confusing for a European mainlander.
I started running (again) in March, taking it on more seriously and with more discipline than before. Bought new shoes, Mizunos. My pair of Saucony shoes were 6 years old and gone a bit too hard. Still miss them though, I'm not too fond of the Mizunos yet.
Anyhow, started out with 2.5 to 4 km runs in March, went from 4 to 10 km in April (which is too steep I've been told), was ill for a week in May and am now doing 8 km laps. I found it pretty amazing that metrics (I use Runkeeper) seem to suggest I still haven't fully recovered from my respiratory infection even though I feel I've been over it for quite some time now.
Pace was about 7:00/km when I started and is currently close to 5:30/km. Not sure where I'm heading but I think I'll continue with building my endurance for the next three months before I'll start working on my speed.
― willem, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 12:56 (fourteen years ago)
I use Runkeeper
Will you be on my runkeeper team? It helps me to see/read about other people running, on this thread and on runkeeper.

ZS, if you don't mind cross posting your workouts, you should join dailymile if you are looking for that type of support.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 13:24 (fourteen years ago)
i echo harbl, i can't run nearly as fast as you all, both for endurance reasons and also for fear of restimulating my shin splints. i'm taking a small break since i had tiny twinges at the end of my last run (or jog, more accurately), and it's making me antsy! running seems to reset my sanity index, which then starts to tip over until i can run again.
keeping my speed down has made me able to run for longer, though, and the net effect is that i end up running greater distances.

Respiratory stuff lasts for a long, long time beyond the point where you feel acutely crap. Was it your chest?
If I get a chest infection I cough for months. If you're prone to them I'd advise you to think constantly about how exposed your chest is, even if you're not cold. Esp when running. Be wary too of sweaty tshirt after a run, few mins and that's basically cold water.
Personally I wouldn't sleep without a shirt on, tho I am particularly stringent on this stuff cos I have chronic health stuff.
― ooooiiiioooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaoooooh un - bi - leevable! (LocalGarda), Thursday, 7 June 2012 06:18 (fourteen years ago)
Yes, raspy coughing came from deep down :(That only lasted for 2 days though. Then a throaty cough that lingered for about two weeks. On sweaty shirts: I've got a couple of those "dry fit" type shirts, they're fantastic. Thanks for the info, Ronan.
ZS, couldn't find yr Runkeeper account through your email so I sent you an invite instead, hope it came through.

had a great run this morning. was feeling hungover but i taped up my leg and went to the gym. the bandage really made a difference! was able to get up to 4.8 mph and ran for an hour(i know yall are fast but i haven't been able to go above 4.5 without feeling some shin splinty twinges).
― rayuela, Saturday, 9 June 2012 17:20 (fourteen years ago)
Hooray for no shin splints!
