i don't know i think the fact that an airliner full of people crashed in a fucking river and everyone survived is worth taking a day off from 'news of importance' to celebrate.

I'll go with this, I think. I think it's a pretty fucking amazing story.

CNN was great last night: Look at this fucking amazing plane crash where nobody dies! Look at it! And oh yeah, George Bush ruins everybody's TiVO one last time to brag about making the wrong decisions again.
NOw here's a guy who's an expert on gremlins...

i believe the plane was planted in the ocean a la LOST and this was just a ploy to distract us from the conflict in gaza

heard it ws a viral for new season of LOST
can ne1 confirm?
― cozwn, Friday, 16 January 2009 16:00 (seventeen years ago)
dude there was a fatal crash in NYC (200 or so dead) about 10 months after 9/11 and once they established it wasn't terrorist there was an eerie media silence
American Airlines 587, crashed in Queens, and it was only 2 months later, November 12, 2001.

Great photos, but the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the one of the aircraft listing/sinking was wether or not there were any pets in the cargo hold.Comment by God Bless any Pets as Well - January 16, 2009 at 11:11 am
Well. So much for the feel-good story of the year.

maybe the first officer was flying. DID ANYONE CONSIDER THAT POSSIBILITY?
― Super Cub, Friday, 16 January 2009 23:16 (seventeen years ago)
Wild guess:
- Bird-hit plane circles and ditches in empty field outside Omaha = low-to-moderate news coverage
- Bird-hit plane circles and ditches in strip of river immediately alongside the most densely populated bit of the country, which also happens to be a media center and just generally looms large in the consciousness of people both at home and abroad, giving the whole thing something of the look of a film thriller = lots of news coverage
― nabisco, Friday, 16 January 2009 23:18 (seventeen years ago)
(Apologies if there is some more densely populated bit of the country I'm forgetting, but you know what I mean)
― nabisco, Friday, 16 January 2009 23:19 (seventeen years ago)
the visuals are key here. take away the visuals and this story gets a quarter the attention.
― Super Cub, Friday, 16 January 2009 23:20 (seventeen years ago)
everyone would have died if it ditched in a field in Omaha, no rescue ferries.

well it's population density, so population/area
― Super Cub, Friday, 16 January 2009 23:26 (seventeen years ago)
right?
Okay, the Hudson is a tiny strip amid several of the most densely populated bits of the country, making it both a noteworthy and weirdly convenient place to ditch a plane.
― nabisco, Friday, 16 January 2009 23:37 (seventeen years ago)
a little too convenient if you ask me.
― shook pwns (omar little), Friday, 16 January 2009 23:38 (seventeen years ago)
um they wouldn't have needed boats then, they could have just gotten off the plane.

― Tina Fey's narrative bonsai (I DIED), Friday, 16 January 2009 23:52 (seventeen years ago)
you can land a large a plane in a field without everyone dying
apparently lga is supposed to be more prone to birdstrike given marshes in the area. i would think that applies more to jfk.
― double bird strike (gabbneb), Saturday, 17 January 2009 00:07 (seventeen years ago)
guys if it ditched out over a field #1 bro sully sullenberger the 18th would've just landed the damn plane HELLOOOOOO
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Saturday, 17 January 2009 00:08 (seventeen years ago)
Nabisco OTM with one very notable exception: UA 232 in Sioux City, Iowa 7/19/89
Keep in mind that's supposed to be a SUCCESSFULL crash landing.
― •--• --- --- •--• (Pleasant Plains), Saturday, 17 January 2009 04:00 (seventeen years ago)
I remember watching a doumentary about that sioux city crash landing, a bunch of amazing stories from people who walked off the wrecked plane with minor injuries, or in a few cases no injuries at all. One guy even spotted his hold luggage on the runway, and picked it up as he left the crash site.
― Pashmina, Saturday, 17 January 2009 13:14 (seventeen years ago)
Information theory tells us that amount of information = improbability of event*, so yes, emergency landing in heavily populated area with exactly 0 x casualties is indeed very newsworthy!

the coast guard released a new video that shows a bit of the "landing" and lots of the immediate reaction. The first ferry gets to the plane really quickly. Pretty amazing.

― Super Cub, Saturday, 17 January 2009 18:13 (seventeen years ago)
It was amazingly successful, considering the plane had no hydraulic systems at all. No way to steer it except with the engines. If you want to get all tense and maybe have a good cry at the end, I recommend the episode of Errol Morris's First Person.
part 1 here, links to the rest of it below
