I didn't go outside at lunch due to the ring-o-cops.

They're gone now, btw.
You need to make it a burning ring o' cops. xp

Be careful. Per that Trib article I posted, that's probably enough to arrest you.

i went to tjs with a t-shirt on and was kind of cool but it felt great after being in my stuffy apartment. then i sat on the deck and ate a lime popsicle.

Posting this mostly for the picture, which I feel weird about linking to directly: http://www.shakesville.com/2012/05/chicago-nato-protests-open-thread.html

(because it's an alarming and awful image almost first-person victim POV of a cop about to punch someone, that is, and anybody who has ever been on the receiving end of something like that may not want to see it.)

saw that pic earlier today, also the "chicago police department -- 2012 red rover champions" meme pic of a row of cops in armor with weapons knocking the shit out of unarmed people

I have a question I was hoping one of you might be able to answer. I have to go to traffic court tomorrow for a ticket I got last month and I was wondering what options you have to pay at the clerk's office. Do I need to bring enough cash to cover my ticket and whatever fees?
― heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 22 May 2012 04:30 (twelve years ago) link
I don't really know anything about traffic court, but IME all clerks of Circuit Courts take checks, so bring your checkbook and your driver's license if you have it back (?? idk how that works). If you can't pay by check, there are Chase ATMs on the same level as traffic court.
― Pita Malört (Je55e), Tuesday, 22 May 2012 04:43 (twelve years ago) link
Also, the clerk of court of Cook Co. takes credit cards, but there is a fee.
― Pita Malört (Je55e), Tuesday, 22 May 2012 04:45 (twelve years ago) link
When I went to traffic court last year, you could pay by credit card but it involved some sort of ludicrous operation where you actually had to call your credit card company on a special phone or something.

Have you guys ever had someone come to your door from "an energy company" and offer to lower your rates? This happened yesterday, and it totally freaked me out at first.
― game of crones (La Lechera), Tuesday, 22 May 2012 13:42 (twelve years ago) link
basically this is what happened:
Somehow this dude got into the building and then came to our apt door and asked to see our electric bill. I didn't give it to him, and I asked him a thousand questions and he gave me a thousand shitty sheepish answers, like
me: What have the other people in the building said to this proposal? him; I don't know, yours is the first door I knocked on
me: why do you seem like you don't know what you're talking about?him: uh sorry it's my first day on the job
i didn't mean to give this guy an unnecessarily hard time, but wtf is he doing knocking on my door?!
― game of crones (La Lechera), Tuesday, 22 May 2012 13:43 (twelve years ago) link
i realize that i may overreact when strangers come to the door, but ime it has never been a good thing
― game of crones (La Lechera), Tuesday, 22 May 2012 13:48 (twelve years ago) link
Dude came to our door asking this crap. I told him if they want to provide me any information to mail it and to go away.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 22 May 2012 13:52 (twelve years ago) link
No patience for door to door shit. Legit or not.
I'm only ok with census takers.

So last Wednesday, I brought some carrots and a cheese stick to work and put them in the fridge. I left early that day, and called in on Thursday, and when I came in on Friday, they were gone! I figured my coworker cleaned out our office fridge, and I thought it kind of sucked that she threw out perfectly good snacks, but rather than make a big deal (or any deal) out of it, I just let it go. I like having a clean fridge and if the price is that I occasionally lose a perfectly good snack or two, fine.
Good thing I didn't mention it, because I found the cheese and the carrots in my purse this morning. I never actually put them in the fridge.

i guess i don't know for sure that those door-to-door energy company things are scams but i've always assumed they are. they certainly feel like scams. we've gotten them a few times.

Thanks for the heads up guys, just fyi, if you are ever in a similar situation, they do take credit cards but with a 4.75% fee.

Skin graft.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 00:58 (twelve years ago) link
Nope, just the fee. And wait forever for the little machine to process.

Also, can I just say how insane court fees are? I ended up having to pay thirty bucks for my actual fine, the court costs were 5.5 times the fine in total. My favorite was "miscellaneous fees... $75", which was, of course, smack dab in the middle of a bunch of other detailed fees.
― heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 13:13 (twelve years ago) link
What the shit.
― carl agatha, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 13:49 (twelve years ago) link
Pretty much my reaction. You could see it on the faces of everyone who walked from traffic court into the adjacent clerk's office to pay. The judge would be like, "that's $30 plus court fees", so you'd be thinking, "hmm, that's not too bad, I can't imagine court fees to be that bad". Then you'd get to the clerk's desk and they'd be all, "okay, your total is $195" and you'd be, "what the WHAT".
― heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 13:53 (twelve years ago) link
Did you ask what the "misc. fees" was all about?
― carl agatha, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 14:01 (twelve years ago) link
No because there were signs all over the room and the clerk loudly reminding us every 35 seconds, "Do NOT ask about court fees. Court fees are set by law and cannot be altered. Arguments over court fees can lead to being charged with contempt." It was just, here it is, deal with it.gif
― heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 14:05 (twelve years ago) link
WTF at that sign???
― Pita Malört (Je55e), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 14:30 (twelve years ago) link
That's kind of the hidden fun of tickets where you don't have to appear in court, necessarily. Oh hey yeah the court will dismiss your ticket and you don't have to pay it, just pay a small court fee.
I think "court fees" are considerably less here (I'm thinking thirty-something dollars per offense or something) but it's still a trick.
― mh, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 14:31 (twelve years ago) link
Some of those fees are revenue generators, like "We'll pay for red light cameras by adding an additional $5 in misc. fees onto traffic tickets."
― carl agatha, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 14:35 (twelve years ago) link
The base appearance fee in a civil case is $248.00, but on top of that, there are these misc. fees:
Automation $15.00Document storage $15.00Court Services $25.00Children Waiting Rm $18.00Law Library $18.00Dispute Resolution $1.00
Which at least are itemized on the receipt.
― Pita Malört (Je55e), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 14:41 (twelve years ago) link
That sign is awesome.

I actually really hate that song
FBI Stop Raping My Wife guy is now out there wearing a shirt proclaiming himself the "only arrestee 5/21/12." He also has a sign that says "whistle blower" and a whistle that he toots every three seconds or so. He's still on hunger strike.
― carl agatha, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 16:00 (twelve years ago) link
(Overheard from a traffic cop: "You know he eats as soon as he leaves here.")
― carl agatha, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 16:01 (twelve years ago) link
he's had the whistle for a couple of weeks at least.
i kind of love the song "signs" because it's just so over-the-top. it's also really fun to sing, i would do it at karaoke.
