pet tommy & the barkhaters (darraghmac), Thursday, 17 May 2012 09:47 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i think ik is largely saying liverpool underachieved, they should have done at least a little better, even with the probs in some areas of the team.

ooooiiiioooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaoooooh un - bi - leevable! (LocalGarda), Thursday, 17 May 2012 09:50 (fourteen years ago)

Basically - though definitely not saying that squad can't do the same or worse, left to its own devices.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 17 May 2012 09:53 (fourteen years ago)

more likely that Arsenal, Chelsea and perhaps Spurs will all have much better seasons next year; possibly none of this year's performances would've been good enough for top four next

70, 64 and 69pts respectively? 67.9pts is the average for 4th-placed finishers over the last ten seasons. Not sure anyone with 69-70pts has ever finished as low as 5th in the Prem era (certainly not in the top-four-into CL era). So, y'know, they weren't poor.

You'd hope Liverpool (and Everton, for that matter - add Jelavic to the first half of 11-12 and where do we finish?) would clock low-mid 60s minimum.

city, utd, arsenal, spurs, chelsea- many fans of each of these clubs will feel they have underachieved

Tevez not sorry for Ferguson banner

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 17 May 2012 09:58 (fourteen years ago)

Mike, did you calculate that 67.9 figure yourself on the basis of research and making notes on a little pad?

the pinefox, Thursday, 17 May 2012 10:00 (fourteen years ago)

Owen for Everton
Dalglish for Villa
AVB for WBA
Di Matteo for LFC
Benitez for CFC

so many vacancies at the moment!

the pinefox, Thursday, 17 May 2012 10:01 (fourteen years ago)

Fair point Michael xps - they can certainly all play better, I'd argue, but it's easy to lose sight of how effectively Arsenal in particular turned it into cold hard points.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 17 May 2012 10:02 (fourteen years ago)

Yep. It's a displacement activity on a stressful morning.

Tevez otm

"It seems like Ferguson is the president of England. Every time he speaks badly about a player or says terrible things about me, nobody says that he has to apologise. (But) when someone comes out with a joke or banter, you have to say sorry - but I don't say sorry."

Djibril Citté (onimo), Thursday, 17 May 2012 10:05 (fourteen years ago)

but I don't say sorry

I have noticed that tbf

Tevez is like de Niro's character in Mean Streets, except somehow totally reliable at his job.

Don't see why Tevez should apologise to Ferguson... possibly think first about apologising to his own children for using them as a bargaining tool at the drop of a hat

Charles Kennedy Jumped Up, He Called 'Oh No'. (Tom D.), Thursday, 17 May 2012 10:11 (fourteen years ago)

It speaks badly of Argentine politics imo, that Tevez thinks that's how presidents are. Obama's presidency not noted for widespread contrition amongst critics.

Lawro says: KD will not be fired

the pinefox, Thursday, 17 May 2012 10:12 (fourteen years ago)

It's quite refreshing how immediately dead wood is being cleared from clubs - McLeish, Owen and, less kindly, KD.

Is there anyone that Tottenham can lose? Amazingly, Bentley was named as being in the squad the other day. Get rid of his and Jenas's wages and it more than pays for Modric's pay rise.

the pinefox, Thursday, 17 May 2012 10:22 (fourteen years ago)

Is Dos Santos still there? Gomes?

Anti-Glaswegian bias, if you ask me

Charles Kennedy Jumped Up, He Called 'Oh No'. (Tom D.), Thursday, 17 May 2012 10:30 (fourteen years ago)

Gomes! Yes he was walking around the pitch at the lap of honour the other day, in a pullover and jacket - touching. But he probably needs to go (mes).

So do Bentley, Jenas, maybe Dos Santos (or can he still be an OK player?) - d-Mac, is that it?

the pinefox, Thursday, 17 May 2012 10:33 (fourteen years ago)

Is Pienaar still Spurs? Not that he's dead wood, nor Krancjar for that matter. But they seem like almost unused squad players. Tbh I think Spurs should utilize them more.

pandemic, Thursday, 17 May 2012 10:51 (fourteen years ago)

Pienaar went back to EFC.
Krancjar is a good player I would be sorry to lose.

http://eurorivals.net/squad/tottenham.html tells us:

TOTTENHAM SQUAD: GOALKEEPERS
•Heurelho Gomes•Carlo Cudicini•Brad Friedel•David Button•Jordan Archer

TOTTENHAM SQUAD: DEFENDERS
•Gareth Bale•Younes Kaboul•William Gallas•Michael Dawson•Ledley King•Kyle Walker•Benoit Assou-Ekotto•Ryan Nelsen•Bongani Khumalo•Kevin Stewart•Jack Barthram

TOTTENHAM SQUAD: MIDFIELDERS
•Tom Huddlestone•Aaron Lennon•Scott Parker•Rafael Van Der Vaart•Luka Modric•Giovani Dos Santos•Niko Kranjcar•Danny Rose•Jake Livermore•Sandro•Andros Townsend•David Bentley•Ryan Fredericks•Cristian Ceballos•Massimo Luongo•Jake Nicholson•Jesse Waller-Lassen•Dean Parrett

TOTTENHAM SQUAD: FORWARDS
•Emmanuel Adebayor•Louis Saha•Jermain Defoe•Cameron Lancaster•Alex Pritchard

the pinefox, Thursday, 17 May 2012 10:53 (fourteen years ago)

Saha, Nelson, Corluka, Khumalo and Bostock should probably all be looking for new clubs.

Just like you, except hot (ShariVari), Thursday, 17 May 2012 10:55 (fourteen years ago)

Pienaar is only on loan - I think he reverts to THFC on July 31st.

Looking at old Prem seasons on Wiki...

Amazingly Coventry City went all season without an away win but still managed to secure 14th place due to an impressive home record which saw them win 12 out of their 19 matches. Coventry also lifted the World Cup after defeating Brazil 6-0 in the final at McCain Stadium, Scarborough.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 17 May 2012 10:56 (fourteen years ago)

* Gomes can go
* King is rumoured to be quitting, or it's said that he should
* who is Kumalo
* is Huddlestone good enough to keep, even if he gets fit?
* it is incredible that Bentley is still in the squad - big wages, wasting his life. Something must be done. (but where's Jenas?)
* we really are incredibly weak up front. Given that Adebayor isn't very reliable, and is leaving, we look totally toothless save Defoe's ability to finish chances.

- wait, was Corluka even on the list?
- Nelsen has only just arrived, HR will want to keep him.

the pinefox, Thursday, 17 May 2012 10:57 (fourteen years ago)

Corluka and Bostock have already gone

the pinefox, Thursday, 17 May 2012 10:57 (fourteen years ago)

Honestly, we don't really want Pienaar - he's good for you, not for us. Keep him. Oh, but give us £3m.

the pinefox, Thursday, 17 May 2012 10:58 (fourteen years ago)

Nelson and Saha might have just arrived but when your club launches a very public internal enquiry into why they bought you, three months after you arrive, you might want to look at other options.

Corluka's still listed as being on loan, as far as i can tell, but he's clearly not coming back.

Just like you, except hot (ShariVari), Thursday, 17 May 2012 11:01 (fourteen years ago)

Was it only last season that Spurs had 4 good strikers and the problem was picking the right pairing? (obviously dmac might have smthg to say about crouch=good)? Now if Ade goes it's Saha or Defoe? Blimey.

pandemic, Thursday, 17 May 2012 11:01 (fourteen years ago)

Also is it normal to have as many GKs as CFs?

pandemic, Thursday, 17 May 2012 11:02 (fourteen years ago)

lol at 'very public internal inquiry' - is that true? Is Harry on the hook for this?

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 17 May 2012 11:04 (fourteen years ago)

Also I see Euro-Rivals has broken the news that Walker and Ekotto have decided to swap first names. How comradery of them.

pandemic, Thursday, 17 May 2012 11:04 (fourteen years ago)

Oh. I can't read. Never mind. D'oh.

pandemic, Thursday, 17 May 2012 11:05 (fourteen years ago)

never heard about this inquiry

this squad doesn't look entirely balanced to me - strikers very weak. agree, it's not long since we had 'too many strikers' (but wouldn't play Keane).

the pinefox, Thursday, 17 May 2012 11:06 (fourteen years ago)

'inquiry' (one Express report?) really is comical idea - HR to investigate himself? a crack team brought in? bizarre.

Spurs agreed to make Pienaar one of the highest earners at the club on £70,000 a week when they signed him from Everton in January 2011, but Redknapp barely played him before allowing him to return to Goodison Park on loan a year later

Good URL!

Michael Jones, Thursday, 17 May 2012 11:24 (fourteen years ago)

oh, just as i'm busy ye start

On loan, iirc- kranjcar, pienaar, corluka, jenas, bassong. Keep first three imo, underutilised but well up to scratch

Not on loan, and deadwood/loseable- bentley, gomes, khumalo, dos santos.

'first team' to be let go- king, gallas

I believe huddlestone to be a quite exceptional talent, pf, and with parker over 30 i don't see any reason to worr over sandro, huddlestone and livermore as good to very good central options.

Youth to come in- naughton, caulker

pet tommy & the barkhaters (darraghmac), Thursday, 17 May 2012 11:34 (fourteen years ago)

nelsen can go, saha i'd keep, adebayor i'd make an offer for but not bank-breaking.

We very much need one of yr mythical '20 goal' strikers, a new first team centre half, and cover at left back and right wing (tho walker could be the latter)

Not a huge summer of activity, depending on who might wish to leave.

pet tommy & the barkhaters (darraghmac), Thursday, 17 May 2012 11:37 (fourteen years ago)

Rose remains cover at LB?
Bentley in theory ought to be cover at RW. If he's not playing, then he has to go. In the name of god, go!

the pinefox, Thursday, 17 May 2012 11:58 (fourteen years ago)

rose could be shipped out, tbh, for all that he gets a game at lb it's not even close to a satisfactory solution- and he's probably a fair bit down the pecking order at lw, if bale, kranjcar, modric, pieenar, vdv are all at the club.

right, second time:

After City's first league title in 44 years Nasri told the French television channel TF1: "People at Arsenal tried to make out that I came here for the money. I hope they are watching me now, collecting my Premier League winner's medal. I believe they have not won a trophy for many years now.

"I made the hard choice to come and fight for my place at a big club, and I have proved it correct. I now hope the Arsenal fans can get on with their lives and forget me.

"If all that I was interested in was money, the easiest decision would have been to stay at Arsenal, picking up my money every week and walking into the team. There are many people doing this right now at Arsenal."

navihchkan (nakhchivan), Thursday, 17 May 2012 12:05 (fourteen years ago)

The higher you build your barriers
The taller I become
The farther you take my rights away
The faster I will run
You can deny me
You can decide to turn your face away
No matter, cos there's....

Something inside so strong
I know that I can make it
Tho' you're doing me wrong, so wrong
You thought that my pride was gone
Oh no, something inside so strong
Oh oh oh oh oh something inside so strong

The more you refuse to hear my voice
The louder I will sing
You hide behind walls of Jericho
Your lies will come tumbling
Deny my place in time
You squander wealth that's mine
My light will shine so brightly
It will blind you
Cos there's something inside so strong
