Update: Reports are that the plane is being towed to Chelsea Piers. And the plane was scheduled to head to Seattle after Charlotte. And a caller told NBC New York, "I saw it hit the river. It just came crashing down into the river. I was wondering why it came down so low; there's no airport around here."

granted, i dont know shit about engineering but is there no way in 09 to make sure that if a bird gets near an engine it isn't able to go inside? there can't be a screen over the engine or something? idk this just seems preventable in this day i'd think

Kudos to the pilot. And kudos to the NY Waterways ferry guys- seems like it went down right across from the big pier 70whatever ferry terminal and they were all over it really quickly.

We can only see the east river from my office but everyone was looking out our west windows anyway.

As noted, the water temp is a bit higher, but not too long. I've had hypothermia in 50 F water, and it happens much faster than you think. Also at the time you don't realize it because your brain slows down so much. Hard to describe, like taking too much decongestant, you think super slowly and just really have no ability to move your arms or anything.

just as an FYI, birds are "kings" of the sky, and we have to defer to their wishes, and right now most of the birds are pretty staunchly anti-regulation--who knows what will happen after this
