Currently still running in my Newton Gravitas.

Jeff, Friday, 11 May 2012 19:18 (fourteen years ago)

brooks! i went to a running gait place & they set me up with brooks shoes. i'd never heard of them -- the extent of my shoe knowledge went from new balance to nike.

rayuela, Friday, 11 May 2012 19:32 (fourteen years ago)

Shoes I've run in:

Fila Flow Sanctuary III - I started running in these, they were unremarkable but did the job at the time.
Adidas Adistar Ride - The shoe I really started running in. Ran my first marathon in these.
Brooks Defyance - Tried them out and got injured not long afterwards. I don't know if they shoes were a factor, but they were bulky and I didn't like them.
Newton Gravitas - Started running with this right after my first marathon. Got used to them and now I find it hard to run in anything else. I put nearly 700 miles on my first pair and up to 282 on my second.
Saucony Kinvara - Toe box was too narrow for me for running. I still wear them casually though.
Altra Instincts - Felt like running with boxes on my feet, didn't work at all.
Merrell Mix Master - My only trail shoe. I've run in exactly one trail race with it. It was through 8 inches of fresh snow so I don't think it really mattered what I ran in.
Adidas Hagio - Really liked the way these felt, but they seemed like more of a racing flat that would be good for short distances. That's great, but I prefer long distance running and I didn't think these would hold up long.
New Balance 730s - The no sock liner thing is weird and it didn't work well with my orthotics.

i got my nu shooz that had to be shipped from the other store so i had not seen them before the box was opened today and they are bright highlighter greenish-yellow with blue soles! also i had already committed to buying orange smartwool socks because i hadn't brought socks and opened the thing to put them on so now i have all the colors. i would not have consciously chosen this but now i have to grow into it.

I've got heel spurs. yeehaw.

Jeff, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 20:35 (fourteen years ago)

i was doing some of those shin splint exercises (i haaate doing them) kind of sporadically and tried the treadmill again yesterday...was able to run 20 min without feeling any major twinges, and today seems fine! (previously i could only run like 5 min max) ...will continue with the exercises and hopefully will be able to run for longer & more frequently without worrying...

rayuela, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 20:46 (fourteen years ago)

i should do those. soreness near that area is making me scared! it's more on the side though. and could be residual pain caused by previous worn-out shoes. i did my 15 min run today in the humid and it was fun. running in the rain last night was also fun but we were locked out of the track we usually use and had to go around the lake across the street, which meant no good way to measure the intervals and we had to count lampposts instead and i kind of cheated not really on purpose because i kept losing count. i also started later than half the people so there was no accountability. i am bad at intervals.

it was raining pretty hard last night!

los blue jeans, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 02:43 (fourteen years ago)

my legs were hurting all over today and i was super slow even compared to normal super slow. i hope it's just because i am running more and need to get used to it.

kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Friday, 18 May 2012 01:07 (fourteen years ago)

lost half a stone in the last 3 weeks, thank you running.

I think I've tried a dozen shoes over the last couple of months. I think I've settled on Brooks Pure Flow.

Jeff, Saturday, 19 May 2012 19:29 (fourteen years ago)

i ran 40 min at an 11:11 pace. slow on purpose is really helpful! i felt like i didn't slow down going uphill and was able to run up the entire hill and keep going for another half mile or so at a very slight incline without slowing down. it wasn't nearly as painful as running 2 days ago either.

kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Saturday, 19 May 2012 22:21 (fourteen years ago)

went to the park today to run and gave up when i realized how far away the dirt trails are from the park entrance. another time, maybe, but if i'm already taking the train, i'd like to be able to get to the trails w/o another 20 min walk (my paranoia about my shin splints makes me leery of running on asphalt). unsuccessful day!

rayuela, Saturday, 19 May 2012 23:00 (fourteen years ago)

ran barefoot on the beach the other day, p sweet

lag∞n, Saturday, 19 May 2012 23:01 (fourteen years ago)

that made my butt sore

kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Sunday, 20 May 2012 20:15 (fourteen years ago)

why is it so hot out i want to running

lag∞n, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 22:04 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, i had an awful run today and it made worry about this summer. i just started running semi-regularly last fall, after it cooled down a bit and temps were generally between 45-65. today it was only 82 or so, but really fucking humid, and i exhausted myself after only a few miles. had to walk twice, and then cut my route short. :(

Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 22:23 (fourteen years ago)

Go out early. During marathon training, for long runs I'll get up 4-4:30 just to beat the heat.

Jeff, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 22:26 (fourteen years ago)

Still, it's going to suck sometimes.

Jeff, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 22:28 (fourteen years ago)

i might rather be murdered than run at 4 in the am

lag∞n, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 22:30 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, that's going to be my obstacle too.

Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 22:42 (fourteen years ago)

--lag∞n

Haha. For a while I was exercising in the am, and then I had to travel for a week and couldn't, and ever since then I havent been able to do it. And I hate exercising in the evenings, so this has evened out to close-to-never...

rayuela, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 23:27 (fourteen years ago)

admittedly our hot isn't as hot as your hot but i way prefer running in the summer heat to having to psyche myself up to run in the miserably pissy rain or grim winter cold

kanye kardashian (lex pretend), Thursday, 24 May 2012 05:54 (fourteen years ago)

I like a midpoint I guess. A sunny winter morning can be really nice (and even hot once you have ran a bit.)

It's the brightness I love the most about running at this time of year, nice city sunsets too.

ooooiiiioooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaoooooh un - bi - leevable! (LocalGarda), Thursday, 24 May 2012 06:17 (fourteen years ago)

i think i am skipping a run on my schedule this week because i just took 2 days off. i was more tired after work than i have ever been yesterday and got in at 7:30. i think i'll be ok though because it's only a 15 min run, i'll do the 20 min and 45 min ones. i have been 100% so far though!

kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Thursday, 24 May 2012 11:38 (fourteen years ago)

I woke up at 5 AM to run this morning. Never fun, but was necessary today.

Jeff, Thursday, 24 May 2012 11:46 (fourteen years ago)

it was huuuuuumid the last 2 runs. just did 45 min at 11:24 pace (calculated distance w/ gmap-pedometer). i am salt-encrusted again. i stopped twice to drink from the water fountain but near the end my ears were hurting and it felt like my head was being squeezed. doesn't that mean dehydration? or is that my very own symptom of nothing?

kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Sunday, 27 May 2012 00:57 (fourteen years ago)

our group run on monday is 2 mile tempo run. i don't think i can keep up my goal of a 29 min 5k pace for 2 miles, sadly. it's a 9:21 mile. maybe. so slow!

kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Sunday, 27 May 2012 00:58 (fourteen years ago)

i ran it in 19:37, it was like 93º and sunny at 6:45 pm and i stopped to drink water at 1.5 miles

well done harbl! glad that these group runs are working out for you

to be clear that was 2 miles NOT the 5k lol

sometimes after a run i feel light headed and a bit dizzy as soon as i stop, even if i cool down. never had the ears hurting though.

i see many running sites recommend having and alternating between two pairs of running shoes. do yall do that? i've ended up with a zappos credit, and while i would rather have the $$, i suppose i could use it on a second pair of running shoes.

rayuela, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 16:48 (fourteen years ago)

Sometimes ears hurt cos of BLOOD HAMMERING AWAY IN YR HEAD, might be some sort of cooling thing, I dunno

I don't get the alternating shoes thing unless it's to let your body recover if one pair of shoes is affecting your biomechanics in a different way to your normal shoes (e.g. transitioning gradually into minimal running shoes from very cushioned ones). I can't see any point in getting two pairs the same unless you do a lot of running in the wet or in the mud, and then you might want to have a spare dry pair. I don't think that the shoes themselves need to rest or recover from running though.

You can do it Sun Myung Moon (NickB), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 21:55 (fourteen years ago)

i think they mean 2 totally different ones because it supposedly prevents repetitive stress injury, which i guess makes enough sense and wouldn't necessarily cost you any more in the long run because you would be halving the wear on each pair but i'm not about to buy another pair of shoes myself

kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 22:01 (fourteen years ago)

Hmm, I can kind of see the sense in that but I would personally recommend sticking the ones that give you rsi straight in the dumper ;)

In my own quest to re-learn how to run, I found this great article on proper running technique:
http://www.scienceofrunning.com/2010/08/how-to-run-running-with-proper.html

It's written slightly stilted sports scientist language but I've found both that and similar articles on running form on that one blog totally fascinating and they've really helped my running. It's weird, but I've never really seen that stuff spelled out in that way before, even though I've read a bunch of running books over the years.

This is the dumbest hobby, like it is boring and painful and when I am running I basically don't enjoy it at all, and yet right now I am all "FOUR HOURS TILL I CAN RUN HURRY UPPP TIME"

Gravel Puzzleworth, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 14:56 (fourteen years ago)

I concur.

Jeff, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 15:19 (fourteen years ago)

Ah see, that's why you gotta do it first thing

poxen, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 15:39 (fourteen years ago)

5k tomorrow and I think I may actually be uninjured and in decent enough shape to actually push it. Need sub 22:43 to PR.

Jeff, Saturday, 2 June 2012 22:38 (fourteen years ago)

Did 6 miles on Thursday and it felt great. Find Nike plus or I guess any self-timing tempts you into ignoring distance in favour of pace. Last few weeks I had been smashing my quickest times, but when I focussed on distance and slowed down things got way better.

ooooiiiioooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaoooooh un - bi - leevable! (LocalGarda), Saturday, 2 June 2012 23:09 (fourteen years ago)

5K done, 21:44. A PR by 59 seconds. Didn't expect this, but I suspect that the course was a little short.

Jeff, Sunday, 3 June 2012 18:25 (fourteen years ago)

Felt good the whole time. Maybe I should have pushed it more. I wonder if I can go sub 20 now. I still sort of hate 5k's though.

Jeff, Sunday, 3 June 2012 19:27 (fourteen years ago)

that's pretty fast imo. i just ran 4.5 miles in 50 min, which is about 11:06/mile. i was trying to slow down more though. i went fast the last 5 min because this is really getting easier, also it's not nearly as hot or humid this week.

kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Sunday, 3 June 2012 23:57 (fourteen years ago)

ran almost 5 miles today! which is nothing for most of you, i'm sure, but for me was a new record. running at about a 7:45 pace, and making good progress toward my goal to get to 6 miles at a 7:30 pace sometime this summer.
