Unfortunately for your purposes, Amanda, I am not susceptible to ginger. But try Thin Mints!

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:54 (twenty years ago)

Oooh, perhaps you would enjoy my mint-in-the-middle butter cookie?

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Yessssssss, perhaps. *Tents fingers and waves them a la Evil Genius*

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:58 (twenty years ago)

now my brain is very confused as to whether i'm craving mint cookies or those trader joe's ginger ones. better to crave the ginger ones, since i actually have some. gmorning.

Juulia (julesbdules), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:59 (twenty years ago)

Let the record show that Trader Joe's Triple Ginger cookies are fucking awesome.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:01 (twenty years ago)

Imagine a small, round butter cookie about the size of a quarter. Small, apparently harmless. Inside of the cookie is one single Junior mint. Mmmmm. On top there's a light drizzle of melted junior mint. Also done with Andes mints.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:02 (twenty years ago)

TRIPLE ginger?! Are they of the ginger snap variety or more like those sandwich cookies?

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:02 (twenty years ago)

I currently brush my teeth with 'gingermint' toothpaste.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Know what mints are also good? Those "After Eight" mints. Mom would always get them for 'special' occasions. Love those things.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Mmmm ginger snaps. I am currently in love with Carr's ginger-lemon cremes. I've been eating two every single day with tea at 3:30pm.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

You & your cookies are hilarious & excellent.

I can't let myself do that at the moment since I'm on the 'new' health plan. I think I've lost two pounds, though!

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:05 (twenty years ago)

i am in full agreement about the TJ ginger cookies, of course.

fuck breakfast/lunch, maybe i'll just have those.

they're not sandwich cookies, they're like gingersnaps, only they taste way way way more gingery than most gingersnaps. i never realized that gingersnaps were supposed to taste like ginger until i had the TJ's kind.

Juulia (julesbdules), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:06 (twenty years ago)

also, they have chunks of candied ginger in them.

Juulia (julesbdules), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:07 (twenty years ago)

sweet jesus. i'm totally getting some!!! fuck a health plan!

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:08 (twenty years ago)

i like to eat chunks of candied ginger. they also probably aren't too terribly bad for you - remember the meringue cookies?

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:08 (twenty years ago)

xp you will not regret it. they rock. when my appetite is iffy (which it is sometimes), they're one of those things that i can always eat, because they're just so so good.

ginger is good for your digestion, too. and, no, they're not too bad for you, as cookies go. gingersnaps generally have less sugar than most cookies, for one thing.

Juulia (julesbdules), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:10 (twenty years ago)

OMG HandyManda -- the Andes mint cookies are like my dream food. Have you tried the Russel Stover's French Mint bars, too? Their lovely smooth consistency makes me think they'd melt well, although I've never tried.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:11 (twenty years ago)

Mmm, I've never tried those, but they sound gooooood. The cookies are pretty easy to make too - just make a butter cookie recipe and then wrap a blob of dough around the mint (all the way around) and drizzle some on top when you take them out of the oven. Try not to make them too big, because they're pretty rich.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:19 (twenty years ago)

I can't bake worth a damn, but I made red curry last night, and it was bad ass. I heart my spice grinder.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:20 (twenty years ago)

OMG, I can't make red curry to save my own life. How did you do it?

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:23 (twenty years ago)

I also love the TJ ginger cookies. Also, I'm eating a LOT of thin mints right now because someone brought in 5 boxes of them to work.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:25 (twenty years ago)

Sarah, I am big-time craving Thin Mints -- I bought 4 boxes but they haven't been delivered yet!!

Ginger is excellent for settling the stomach, along with anise & peppermint & a few other things.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:27 (twenty years ago)

I'm a big believer in Sprite, myself.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:29 (twenty years ago)

Red Curry: I used a variation on the the old standby J0y 0f C00king recipe. Coriander seeds, peppercorns, etc. Toast 'em up, grind 'em up. Food process with lemongrass, lime juice, garlic, galangal, cilantro, red chiles (I used dry and fresh), shallots, and salt. Mash in shrimp paste and you're done.

Then you fry the paste in some oil, mix it with coconut milk, let it thicken a little and stew with your vegetables/tofu/chicken/whatever. Flavor with fish sauce, basil, and sugar at the end.

I'm going to go eat my leftovers now!

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:31 (twenty years ago)

That sounds more involved than what I tried. I guess I'll try again...[sigh].

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:33 (twenty years ago)

I'm feeling particularly broke today. I've been trying to get a handle on my finances, but it feels like trudging through mud, even with my great raise!

Sorry to be a downer in the middle of yum food talk. The Thin Mints were indeed as wonderful as you're imagining.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Yeah... I tend to get way overly involved and it ends up taking forever. Perhaps it's the beers I drink while I cook?

I get the pre-made curry pastes a lot, and they're really good too. Last night I was just feeling like throwing down.

xpost

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:36 (twenty years ago)

it's understandable. finances are scary. i just had to ask my dad (argh no no no) for money the other day because i always confuse what i have and what i can afford. i have great new glasses though.

Juulia (julesbdules), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:39 (twenty years ago)

Yay for new glasses!

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 18:02 (twenty years ago)

Yay! I love the Newman-O's ginger cookies.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Where is Jay today??

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Good call. I'll try calling him.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 19:16 (twenty years ago)

He stayed home today.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 19:19 (twenty years ago)

Lucky boyo. Is he sickish or having a mental health day?

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Just finalized some plans - I'm spending this weekend here (with a special friend of mine ;) ): http://www.duvallhouse.net/

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 19:38 (twenty years ago)

Maybe J is getting geared up for his show tonight? I'll be there!

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Nice, Dan!

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 19:45 (twenty years ago)

I just bought some hair dye: Espresso: Deepest Brown. Get ready for a new me, people.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Yo. Yeah, I stayed home. Not sick, but I just needed to get a good night's sleep and run some errands this afternoon, so you do what you hafta. Eh. I'm about to go do some laundry, but I hope to see some peeps out tonight at the Bottle!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 20:06 (twenty years ago)

I just bought some of these boxed soups (carrot ginger, squash) at Trader Joes. Has anyone tried these?

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 20:15 (twenty years ago)

I enjoy the butternut squash. I usually add cumin or ginger or nutmeg to it.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 20:17 (twenty years ago)

Amanda! You should henna!

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 20:18 (twenty years ago)

xpost - I like them - good and light. I should put that on the kitchen confessions thread. I buy and enjoy boxed soups.

Unfortch, you can't henna over regular hair dye. Your hair will turn green.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 20:18 (twenty years ago)

Rather, my hair will turn green.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 20:19 (twenty years ago)

poop. really? green?

i think you'll look gorgeous with luscious brown hair.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 20:19 (twenty years ago)

How about that? You're right. I took this from hennaforhair.com

"Compound henna does NOT play nice with commercial hair dye and other chemical residue in hair.

People who have itching, blisters, or serious allergic reactions to para-phenylenediamine hair dyes often want to change over to henna hair dyes.

Compound henna often reacts badly with synthetic hair dyes and other chemical hair products! If you use compound henna soon after you have done your hair with para-phenylenediamine dyes, your hair may be brittle, trashed, and may turn frog butt green or offshore sewage outlet black. Compound hennas have metallic salts which react disasterously with the ammonia in synthetic hair dye. Problem is ... many pre-mixed henna powders do NOT have these ingredients listed!"

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 20:20 (twenty years ago)

Thank you! It's time for a change. I'm ready. I know a girl who that happened to and the results were tragic. She had pretty hair too.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 20:21 (twenty years ago)

sounds cool. dying your hair is fun, and dark brown is of course hott.

Juulia (julesbdules), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 20:49 (twenty years ago)

I am irrationally excited about the hair dyeing adventure I am about to undertake. I might even do it tonight, unless I decide to do homework instead. (Note: I should really do homework...I have a take-home exam that is staring at me with the most evil set of eyes.)

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 21:50 (twenty years ago)

Oh my dear sweet baby jesus this is making me laugh. Possibly NSFW (profanity)...

Choose Your Own Adventure (SomethingAwful style)

I guess it kind of helps that I read a lot of those books growing up.
