― Mordy, Thursday, 3 May 2012 14:14 (twelve years ago) link
yes, it's so much easier to remember 'that is non-celebrity brian williams' daughter' every time you hear the name of the character 'marnie' or see 'olivia williams' in the credits than it is to remember that the character is named 'marnie' or the actress 'olivia williams'

i am genuinely curious! i think ilx needs to know more about how you feel about television
mordy i watched the first two and a half seasons and then found i didn't like it as much as i did when i started. i have been watching occasional episodes of this season and got fairly excited about the live one.

there are 4 characters in the show. i most frequently hear them referred to as: brian william's daughter, david mamet's daughter, lena dunham, and the british one. the first two are the daughters of very famous ppl, ppl whose fame completely eclipses their progenies at this point in time. lena dunham's name is lena dunham. the british one's father's name is not 'the british.'
― Mordy, Thursday, 3 May 2012 14:22 (twelve years ago) link
don't then, you condescending douchebag

'daughter of britannia'
― lag∞n, Thursday, 3 May 2012 14:24 (twelve years ago) link
I'll agree that referring to the cast of Girls as "such-and-such's daughter" is douchey, but...I guess referring to the parentage of the Beatles progeny who are talking about starting a band = misandry?
― You Don't Throw Oranges On An Escalator (Deric W. Haircare), Thursday, 3 May 2012 14:25 (twelve years ago) link
yeah, that's a totally tonally appropriate response. your dad is gay.

yeah i think maybe mordy called ilx shrill but u know ilx can be shrill and mordy is profoundly aware of that

the casting should be applauded on esthetic grounds rather than as materiel for the usual nominative/communitarian ruction

the casting obliquely makes a case for nepotism as a rising tide that lifts all boats, cuz daughters and sons are equally favoured it actually has a 'progressive' component
and it works as a 'wry commentary', cuz here is a show about young NYC media hopefuls, but don't forget that the people playing them already have media careers at 22 or w/e thanks at least in some mesure to their connections
i dont think anyone is arguing they arent good enough for their roles? so yeah.....kirke especially is kinda brilliant tho but see tiny furniture more for that
idk how much this is the case in america, with its political dynasties and tradition of plutocratic pseudo-nobility but in the uk at any rate, there seems to be a return to values that (tacitly or otherwise) favour ~good breeding~ and nepotism is in especially fine form these days

Again we are in some looking glass world where being the daughter of Bad Company's drummer opens doors.
― Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 3 May 2012 15:32 (twelve years ago) link

yyyyeah but not really, there are no bad fames any more than people care that your baronetcy came from a victorian opium magnate

theres no way the drummer of bad company could be any sort of industry connect guy

I don't think the assertion here is necessarily one of nepotism so much as: if you have family who have attained some level of fame in the entertainment industry, it's going to be easier for you to enter the entertainment industry on a somewhat higher level than Joe Actor. Whether this increased facility manifests as a result of strings your family members can pull or connections they have or name recognition or even simply the fact that they've had a level of exposure to the industry that allows for a greater understanding of its workings, the fact is that you're gonna have an easier go of it.
