peter crouch is currently sitting with his head in hands - wondering at what could've been.

Cisse, man.

pandemic, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 21:12 (fourteen years ago)

I preferred Cisse's first - beautiful technique. Second is a mad spectacular swinger and has much more of an element of fortune.

Keith pissed on my chips (onimo), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 21:12 (fourteen years ago)

that's my take on it onimo- modric's goal had more technique imo

jesus, you lot will challops about anything won't you?

Number None, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 21:21 (fourteen years ago)

I preferred Cisse's first - beautiful technique. Second is a mad spectacular swinger and has much more of an element of fortune.

It could be pure fronting but there's something in his attitude watching that second goal and the way that he hit it both hard but with just enough of the outside of his foot that makes me think he might have meant it.

L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 21:31 (fourteen years ago)

holy holy fuck that goal is insaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaane.

Thoughts? You must have loads. (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 21:32 (fourteen years ago)

nn and winston otm

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 21:33 (fourteen years ago)

He meant to shoot and score and swerve it but I think he was aiming near post and just got mad extra spin on it - it's crazy and beautiful but the first is cool and classy and reminds me of peak era Thierry Henry.

Amazing how many brilliant goals he's managed to fit into his short time at Newcastle.

Keith pissed on my chips (onimo), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 21:34 (fourteen years ago)

winston ?

Thoughts? You must have loads. (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 21:35 (fourteen years ago)

i was disappointed, the first few frames looked like it was heading into the near post, but imo he wouldn't have tried to hit it over the keeper from there, i'm saying a wild cunt that came off this time.

underleg aeroboots i have smithed (darraghmac), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 21:36 (fourteen years ago)

do we have a newcastle appreciation thread?

Thoughts? You must have loads. (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 21:37 (fourteen years ago)

Very nasty airborne leading elbow from Mikel in revenge for an over-the-ball a few minutes earlier. Tiote out cold by the looks, fell heavily on his tailbone.

xps

Number None, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 21:40 (fourteen years ago)

I've decided he meant it cos of how he kinda jogs to the right after hitting it, suggesting he's prepared to sprint into the area diagonally if Cech tips it out or it comes back off the bar

pure analysis no projection involved

listicular fortitude (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 22:46 (fourteen years ago)

redknapp dropping truth bombs

"There are lots of lads cleverer than me managing lower-division clubs," he reasoned. "I'm lucky. I get very well-paid. I've got a fantastic job. I don't think anyone owes me anything."

"I might be an idiotic, patriotic Englishman and I went to the World Cup thinking we would win it and I think we have got a real chance in the Euros," he said.

mizzell, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 23:04 (fourteen years ago)

What do people mean when they ask/wonder if "he meant it"?

Like, how much of any goal can/does any player ever consciously "mean"?

I.E. astounding goal, so who cares.

Upt0eleven, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 23:11 (fourteen years ago)

they mean was he trying to score or trying to cross/ something else

mizzell, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 23:14 (fourteen years ago)

Doesn't seem to me like that's most of the debate happening here.

Of course he fucking meant to shoot. Everything beyond that is impossible to know, probably even for the player himself.

Upt0eleven, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 23:19 (fourteen years ago)

top left or top right corner I think is the coin-flippin' conundrum here but broadly speaking I agree w/ you

listicular fortitude (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 23:25 (fourteen years ago)

1508 more posts and this overtakes last year's thread as the longest thread ever. With Spurs on a knife-edge, I know we can do this.

if you add say at least a third of that total, kenny will have delivered at least one module

I'd forgotten about that. Three thousand in a month? We should really get on with our work more.

a hoy hoy, American references. ESPN has plays of the week from all sports) and they're showing European soccer now since they have some CL and EPL rights. No-hitter is baseball term. It's very, very hard and very rare.

L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Thursday, 3 May 2012 19:58 (fourteen years ago)

I think it makes for great TV, the second goal, but the first is the more conventionally impressive.

L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Thursday, 3 May 2012 19:59 (fourteen years ago)

would have been a perfect game but for a passed ball as well.

Someone's going to be declaring himself flattered, but unavailable, this afternoon.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 4 May 2012 10:40 (fourteen years ago)

nah, too busy drafting his statement stepping back from the Barca post. (After a two week process, it will turn out to be "I'm flattered, but unavailable.)

danny houellebecq (Merdeyeux), Friday, 4 May 2012 11:05 (fourteen years ago)

"Shearer, who will be part of the BBC's Euro 2012 coverage."

Guardian killing their own story in seven paragraphs. Unless they're banking on a first round knockout and Shearer being available in the studio for the business end of the tournament. Football's answer to Steve Davis.

Shearer 'flattered' by talk of England.
London Evening Standard
23 Jun 2006
Byline: KEN DYER

ALAN SHEARER is set to become Steve McClaren's assistant in England's new coaching regime after the World Cup.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 4 May 2012 11:19 (fourteen years ago)

Alan Shearer, flattered by recent reports linking him with the vacant England manager job, has let it be known that his head is being turned by the prospect of becoming a manager. In Newcastle code this means if he was given £50m in the January transfer window he’d fancy his chances of leading the club down the black and white brick road back to the Geordie glory days again.

Keith pissed on my chips (onimo), Friday, 4 May 2012 11:20 (fourteen years ago)

In that Guardian piece he doesn't actually say anything about becoming an England coach.

the pinefox, Friday, 4 May 2012 11:22 (fourteen years ago)

Alan Shearer tonight ruled himself out of the race to succeed Mark Hughes as Blackburn Rovers boss.
The 37-year-old former England captain had emerged as one of the favourites among fans of his former club in recent days, but after speaking to chief executive John Williams, ‘politely declined’ the offer of a place on the shortlist.
Asked about the situation in his role as a BBC pundit during the Euro 2008 clash between Switzerland and Turkey, Shearer said: ‘The situation was, and is, that I was very flattered to have got a call from chief the executive, John Williams, at Blackburn.
‘He asked me if I would like to be included on a shortlist for the manager's job, which I politely declined because of the commitments that I have, namely this one.
‘I was very flattered to have been asked and I thank him for that.

Keith pissed on my chips (onimo), Friday, 4 May 2012 11:22 (fourteen years ago)

I wonder if he has any managerial ability?

the pinefox, Friday, 4 May 2012 11:26 (fourteen years ago)

G W D L Win %
Newcastle United 1 April 2009 24 May 2009 8 1 2 5 12.50

I think only Terry Connor has a worse win percentage (0.00%) in Premier League history.
