well it makes perfect sense that 30 rock would mix celebration with self-deprecation and pessimism

some dude, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 15:49 (fourteen years ago)

(i mean, okay, one of the show's recurring and central ironies is that liz lemon's belief that her show accomplishes anything is on a diegetic level constantly and consistently exposed ... but we know that liz lemon is a character played by etc etc etc.)

xpost yeah, i don't want to make it ... one-note in that way

thomp, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

this vs 'community' is like the textbook example of motivated parody vs pastiche

thomp, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

So how do they get all these babies to throw stinkeyes so well?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 4 May 2012 05:27 (fourteen years ago)

The actor in the role of "Virginia" is actually a graduate of The Actors' Studio and won a Golden Globe in 1992, also for playing a baby.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 May 2012 05:30 (fourteen years ago)

this was almost as funny as the first Queen of Jordan episode, and just as annoying. it's hard to stand that Bravo style being aped so perfectly that it captures what's awful about the real shows, like the incessant flashbacks and character cards and crap

Nhex OTM. It was funny, but it was so note-perfect that it's a little hard to watch (if you loathe that type of show with every fiber of your being, anyway).

this show is so good.

horseshoe, Friday, 4 May 2012 16:06 (fourteen years ago)

after a weak start to this season, its totally hit a new level of high with the last 3-4 episodes.

JIM THOMETHEUS (zachlyon), Friday, 4 May 2012 17:53 (fourteen years ago)

this show is 5000% better when they leave the basic format or leave the building or include interesting one-off characters (that aren't celebrity cameos) or theme eps. basically everything but the standard liz/jenna/tracy/kenneth/jack interacting with each other all episode. i wouldn't mind if all next season is holiday eps w/dennis and theme eps with very few multi-ep arcs, cause that's what's working for them at this point.

JIM THOMETHEUS (zachlyon), Friday, 4 May 2012 17:58 (fourteen years ago)

I'd be more than ok with 30 Rock getting replaced by Queen of Jordan.

I DIED, Friday, 4 May 2012 18:12 (fourteen years ago)

heh I would love to see that happen if Baldwin actually does leave the show and Tina Fey decides not to continue it without him. D'Fwan is a talent.

raw feel vegan (silby), Friday, 4 May 2012 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

lmao i love when they do the reality show

lag∞n, Friday, 4 May 2012 18:20 (fourteen years ago)

if this was the Community thread we'd be arguing over the percentage of character development that occurred in this ep.

President Keyes, Saturday, 5 May 2012 01:14 (fourteen years ago)

shhhh don't Beetlejuice the spectre of whiny threadcrapping back to 30 Rock, we've had enough seasons of that

Nhex, Saturday, 5 May 2012 02:14 (fourteen years ago)

btw did anyone ever find the old 30 Rock thread?

30 Rock

looks like this is going to get a 13 or 14 episode final season. http://tvline.com/2012/05/07/nbc-renew-30-rock-final-season-community-parks-and-recreation-short-seasons/

how to break it to Community and Parks fans that their next seasons will be shorter.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 03:20 (fourteen years ago)

tbh I'm fine with brief seasons of all three shows, if it means every episode is a corker.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 03:24 (fourteen years ago)

well that's a big if. probably means parks and community will be cancelled though.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 03:24 (fourteen years ago)

These shows can't last forever.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 03:25 (fourteen years ago)

yes they can

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 03:29 (fourteen years ago)

parks and rec, especially, deserves better. i love the other two shows as well, but let's face it, they were never gonna be mainstream hits

Nhex, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 03:35 (fourteen years ago)

I kind of wish every show had 12-14 episode sesons. It would make the run more of an event, writers would focus on quality rather than churn (theoretically), more shows would have a chance to air and find an audience. This is something I've been saying for years ad years tho. Good on NBC if they're going to give it a shot.

Clay, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 04:11 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think that there's intention. I think they want to retool the whole network but aren't ready to just throw out everything. Parks does respectable ratings for them so I hope they give it a full season.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 04:16 (fourteen years ago)

yeah I'm just wishing and hoping mostly. If slipping comedy blocks in and out seemed to work though maybe they'd take the hint. NBC obv needs to do something pretty radical to retool.

Clay, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 04:18 (fourteen years ago)

I'm OK w/ a shorty for 30 rock coz I think TF is kind of done w/ it tbh. Community will get a deal to get it to syndication and it will die a peaceful death. I have no idea wtf they're doing cutting down P & R unless it's to do a split season thing they way they've been doing it lately?

Grimy Little Pimp (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 04:22 (fourteen years ago)

parks also gets horrible ratings really (they're 'respectable for nbc' but i don't think 'respectable for nbc' is something the new regime is satisfied by anymore) and take 30 rock (which would probably be wrapping up next season regardless of nbc's interest), community, and the office (which might not even make it to next season though i can't imagine nbc drops that show w/o milking a finale and a return carrell appearance out of it) off that network and i'm not sure how or where parks fits in.

balls, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 04:27 (fourteen years ago)

BFF and Bent could've been good but they didn't even give them a chance. NBC cancels so many shows so quickly. Even for a show as shitty as Outsourced, they just cancel it after one season and replace it with Whitney, and then cancel that. What's the point?

polyphonic, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 04:30 (fourteen years ago)

Whitney hasn't been cancelled. It actually gets respectable ratings for a Wednesday night, and did a hell of a lot better than Up All Night did in the Thursday post-Office timeslot. They're pretty desperate, but they need to build a new brand and get the word out somehow because people don't even seem to sample their shows. I think they must have felt that the success of The Voice would have been the start of something new, but Smash's ratings have plummeted. Of all the non-Office comedies Parks and Rec does the best, which is why i think they would keep it around for whatever transition they can make. It's a shame they squandered all those years of The Office by not getting another hit, though we've obviously got three good comedies out of their attempts.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 04:34 (fourteen years ago)

The thing I saw said Whitney was probably not going to make it to s2, and Up All Night was.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 04:35 (fourteen years ago)

Outsourced lasted a full year? Gods.

Pot Leeedom (Leee), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 04:37 (fourteen years ago)

I read that Whitney was likely to be renewed. All guessing until next week, I suppose.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 04:38 (fourteen years ago)

the office (which might not even make it to next season though i can't imagine nbc drops that show w/o milking a finale and a return carrell appearance out of it) off

Please do this! The last season was the worst season ever, and the show has devolved into utter meaninglessness. Still halfway entertaining, but really horribly, lazily written.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 05:44 (fourteen years ago)

Smash is really an awful show.

Mordy, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 12:34 (fourteen years ago)

The thing I saw said Whitney was probably not going to make it to s2, and Up All Night was.

This would be ideal, imo.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 15:05 (fourteen years ago)

Smash IS terrible, but i still feel like it's funny/bad enough that it kind of justifies its existence, if that makes any sense

Up All Night definitely deserves a second season

Nhex, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 15:31 (fourteen years ago)

i'm a broken record on this but Up All Night is a waste of its cast, they need to stop dragging that mediocre shit out and let them go off and do better projects

some dude, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 18:35 (fourteen years ago)

You're not the only person I know who is vocal about disliking Up All Night, but that show for me is all about specific moments that I wasn't expecting or moments that could be tropes but were pulled off in ways that are fresh.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 18:41 (fourteen years ago)

I have a feeling that it could be one of those shows that finds its feet in the second season and becomes really funny, like Parks and Rec.
