― Alex in SF, Friday, 6 February 2009 19:24 (seventeen years ago)
so I'm not so new to the bay area but I'm new to actually living in the city.
question: good indian food near upper haight?
― iatee, Friday, 6 February 2009 19:33 (seventeen years ago)
also: cheap
― iatee, Friday, 6 February 2009 19:34 (seventeen years ago)
Naan & Chutney on Haight/Fillmore is cheap. It's debatable how good it is.
― Alex in SF, Friday, 6 February 2009 19:39 (seventeen years ago)
yeah I keep walking past that place and considering going in.
cheap is more important than good right now actually.
― iatee, Friday, 6 February 2009 19:41 (seventeen years ago)
this place's deco is not much to look at, but it's tasty, cheap, the veggie options are good and the waiters take friendliness to levels of surrealism (they're good people). if that was my neighborhood I'd eat there a lot.

if you want cheap indian, go to the tenderloin.
it will def be better and cheaper than anything in the haight (nb: i do like n&c for what it is).
― (*゚ー゚)θ L(。・_・) °~ヾ(・ε・ *) (Steve Shasta), Friday, 6 February 2009 19:56 (seventeen years ago)
what's good in the tenderloin? I usually pass through on my walk home anyway
― iatee, Friday, 6 February 2009 19:57 (seventeen years ago)
there's a trio of restaurants around jones/o'farrell that i think are all great:
shalimarlahore karahichutney

awesome thanks
― iatee, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:02 (seventeen years ago)
I've only been to Shalimar of those three and it's good, but not worth going out of your way for.
Steve, on a slightly higher end Indian tip, have you eaten at Dosa?

i like dosa but it's $$$. if you get out of the city, specifically the south bay (fremont esp.) you can get much better south indian.
― (*゚ー゚)θ L(。・_・) °~ヾ(・ε・ *) (Steve Shasta), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:05 (seventeen years ago)
for $-$$
Dosa r0xxors but yeah not cheap. and no question there is better indian food outside of SF than within it. There's a chaat house in Berkeley that is amazing A+++ authentic stuff
― Courtney Love's Jew Loan Officer (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:07 (seventeen years ago)
I've never been to Fremont, but considering every Indian I've ever worked with has lived there I would assume the food is much better there.
― Alex in SF, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:09 (seventeen years ago)
something to do after an A's game in 2012 I guess
― iatee, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:18 (seventeen years ago)
Hahaha, there's that and every Indian restaurant I went to I was the only non-Indian there as well.
Speaking of outside SF... there was (is?) a KILLLLLLLLER buffet place in sunnyvale that i went to about 5-7 years ago.... they had SIX different rices for example. The buffet was about 50 yards long no kidding.
I always wanted to go back, they had mango lassi froyo... sigh...

― (*゚ー゚)θ L(。・_・) °~ヾ(・ε・ *) (Steve Shasta), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:23 (seventeen years ago)
Haha well you could take BART to Fremont. Not sure it's worth it to save a couple of bucks on a slightly better Indian meal though.
― Alex in SF, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:24 (seventeen years ago)
I don't drive!
― Dr Morbius, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:24 (seventeen years ago)

― Alex in SF, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:27 (seventeen years ago)
where do you want to go in CT, Steve?
― double bird strike (gabbneb), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:28 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, i think it's a cuisine thing too...
SF is populated with TONS of West Indian/North Indian/Pakistani eateries...
People who prefer South Indian have less options and Fremont is like a haven for those palates.

They have a smattering of edible (by downtown standards) sushi, a good deal of Chinese stuff including char siu, usually some kind of steamed fish, potstickers, but they also have simple western things like potroast, roast turkey, brussels sprouts, asparagus, green beans, and also a nice salad bar.
