Mr. Show with Bob and David: Genius or Overrated?

The final straw for me with Cross was all his whining about how bad he has it on the Alvin and the Chipmunks movies. You signed up for the Alvin and the Chipmunks movies. What on earth about "third Alvin and the Chipmunks movie" made you think it was going to be an actor's dream, especially after burning so many bridges talking shit about the first two?

i have to admit, i laughed at the comedians zinging each other for being in shitty movies that the alvin thing started.

Growing up non southern Baptist in the bible belt will warp your perspective on religion a bit. Still, you'd think a nearly 50 year old would over it by now.

I think the "Jewish" thing is more significant than the "non-SB" thing.

Oh definitely, but in my experience (as someone living in the south) it's also true for *anyone* not down with southern evangelical culture. I was raised Catholic and I was told I was a non-Jesus-believing heathen several times as a kid. By adults as well as children.

So, extrapolating from my own experience, I can see why being Jewish in the south (especially in the 70's when Cross grew up there) would be fucking alienating in the extreme and warp your view on religion for a long time.

It's better now, and there's a lot more diversity where I live than there was even 15 years ago, but the South is the South.

also me and my sister were regularly told by kids, teachers and kid's parents when we visited their homes that we were going to hell since we hadn't accepted jesus into our lives, both subtly and straight up explicitly

i remember buying my first car with my parents and it was from a friendly good ol boy and the whole process was great and he was a sweetheart right until we got down to the payment and my dad told him he appreciated working with him on the price and the guy said "well you weren't jewing me down or anything it's alright" and we all got very quiet, he bought my car with the money from my savings bonds and we left. put a damper on the excitement, i tell you what

so again, i have no issue with this guy bitching about shitkickers; feels like he's within his rights
i made my peace a long time ago with that stuff but i ain't about to tell him what he should and shouldn't be complaining about

i think i still have all my vhs tapes where i taped each episode. watched them so many times. i don't even know how i knew to tape it. i don't remember reading about it or anything. but i never missed a show. so inspiring. felt like it took forever for the DVDs to come out.

yeah I had VHS tapes from a friend, which we subsequently copied - this was around '97 or so (I didn't know anybody at the time who actually paid for HBO)

When Scott and I first started hanging out, one of the first things he played me on his t.v. was his Mr. Show videos. I think he was really relieved when my sides were splitting and asked to see more. We might not be married today if I had hated it.

if I had to pick a single Mr. Show sketch to save in a fire it would def be "The Audition" which is just perfect from start to finish.

I was staying over at a friend's house in the mid-'90s and, having no idea what a Mr. Show was, we happened upon the Bob Lamonta sketch while flipping through channels. Probably still one of my hardest laughs of all time. And yes, once I was exposed, it really did feel like forever until those DVDs were released.
