Yeah, I felt the same way, given the warnings I had heard. In the end it wasn't the state of the Tenderloin or feeling in danger walking through there, it was the juxtaposition I noted above, and, yeah, the fact that it seemed like so many needed help from the state.

GOOblar, also note that the homeless problem has been a major issue in mayoral elections for years, now.

After Times Square in the '80s, I find the Tenderloin a picnic.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 16:08 (seventeen years ago)

xpost right, yeah I figured this isn't news to anyone around there..

Gorgeous Preppy (G00blar), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 16:09 (seventeen years ago)

I know this might sound naif but I find Times Square almost unbearable, now. I like parts of the Tenderloin: some good bars and restaurants and not nearly as sketchy as it used to be. Its ubiquitous bouquet of piss is somewhat of a challenge, though.

Oh, I agree, I prefer sleazy porn and street violence to $120-ticket Disney cartoon adaptations onstage.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 16:18 (seventeen years ago)

I have a kind of self-loathing at my bi-coastal reaction, but it does seem to exemplify everything I abhor about modern America and the bad aspects of a 'cleaned-up' Manhattan.

The Tenderloin has been skid row for oh... about 161 years now.

There was even a brief period when I preferred Sally Forth. (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 16:38 (seventeen years ago)

I like all three mixed together.

A man of such catholic tastes...

If you want to throw Catholics in the mix, I'm all for that too.

"Urban artist collective that stages elaborate scavenger hunts and runs fake cult. Very cute idea.
Sort-of like a bored yuppie's version of live-action D&D."

Sigh.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 20:08 (seventeen years ago)

I have a (potentially dumb/obvious) question...does anyone know why the Tenderloin hasn't naturally gentrified? Considering the theoretical value of the land (esp in the 90s and 00s) I was always surprised it hasn't been slowly bought up and cleaned up.

iatee, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 20:12 (seventeen years ago)

er..."naturally" = naturally, rich people like to do stuff that makes them more money

iatee, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 20:13 (seventeen years ago)

It has shrunk. It just takes a while for these things to happen.

I love San Francisco

Milton Parker, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 22:51 (seventeen years ago)

I think they are all taxis in SF, Steve.

Carne Meshuggah (libcrypt), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

three weeks pass...

This was actually quite fun.

Yup. Went there last night.

Is it good? My dog got tied out in front there enough.

Alex in SF, Friday, 6 February 2009 19:24 (seventeen years ago)

so I'm not so new to the bay area but I'm new to actually living in the city.

question: good indian food near upper haight?

iatee, Friday, 6 February 2009 19:33 (seventeen years ago)

also: cheap

iatee, Friday, 6 February 2009 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

Naan & Chutney on Haight/Fillmore is cheap. It's debatable how good it is.

Alex in SF, Friday, 6 February 2009 19:39 (seventeen years ago)

yeah I keep walking past that place and considering going in.

cheap is more important than good right now actually.

iatee, Friday, 6 February 2009 19:41 (seventeen years ago)

this place's deco is not much to look at, but it's tasty, cheap, the veggie options are good and the waiters take friendliness to levels of surrealism (they're good people). if that was my neighborhood I'd eat there a lot.

Milton Parker, Friday, 6 February 2009 19:49 (seventeen years ago)

if you want cheap indian, go to the tenderloin.

it will def be better and cheaper than anything in the haight (nb: i do like n&c for what it is).

(*゚ー゚)θ L(。・_・) °~ヾ(・ε・ *) (Steve Shasta), Friday, 6 February 2009 19:56 (seventeen years ago)

what's good in the tenderloin? I usually pass through on my walk home anyway

iatee, Friday, 6 February 2009 19:57 (seventeen years ago)

there's a trio of restaurants around jones/o'farrell that i think are all great:

shalimar
lahore karahi
chutney

(*゚ー゚)θ L(。・_・) °~ヾ(・ε・ *) (Steve Shasta), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:01 (seventeen years ago)

awesome thanks

iatee, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:02 (seventeen years ago)

I've only been to Shalimar of those three and it's good, but not worth going out of your way for.

Steve, on a slightly higher end Indian tip, have you eaten at Dosa?

i like dosa but it's $$$. if you get out of the city, specifically the south bay (fremont esp.) you can get much better south indian.

(*゚ー゚)θ L(。・_・) °~ヾ(・ε・ *) (Steve Shasta), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:05 (seventeen years ago)

for $-$$

(*゚ー゚)θ L(。・_・) °~ヾ(・ε・ *) (Steve Shasta), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:05 (seventeen years ago)

Dosa r0xxors but yeah not cheap. and no question there is better indian food outside of SF than within it. There's a chaat house in Berkeley that is amazing A+++ authentic stuff

Courtney Love's Jew Loan Officer (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:07 (seventeen years ago)

I've never been to Fremont, but considering every Indian I've ever worked with has lived there I would assume the food is much better there.

Alex in SF, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:09 (seventeen years ago)

something to do after an A's game in 2012 I guess

iatee, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:18 (seventeen years ago)

Hahaha, there's that and every Indian restaurant I went to I was the only non-Indian there as well.

Speaking of outside SF... there was (is?) a KILLLLLLLLER buffet place in sunnyvale that i went to about 5-7 years ago.... they had SIX different rices for example. The buffet was about 50 yards long no kidding.

I always wanted to go back, they had mango lassi froyo... sigh...

(*゚ー゚)θ L(。・_・) °~ヾ(・ε・ *) (Steve Shasta), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:19 (seventeen years ago)

$8.95 for lunch. unbelievable deal.

okay, my coworker says it's called Sneha... but that it changed owners and isn't as good as it used to be.
