I have a spare room with a comfy bed and should have a new bathroom by then too, Lixi & Stevem. I also have a *CAR* and can pick you up from the airport, if that is how you're coming, as long as it fits with my working hours. Is that luxe enough for you?

That sounds more than marvellous. I think we may have to get teh train from the airport, i think the times are not work friendly. I never even knew you could drive. Whatever next?

Filth. Ah, it looks like you're coming in to Prestwick anyway. I haven't driven that far yet - I only got it last night. The first thing I did was go to Sainsbury's and buy way more than I could ever carry on the bus.

Haha. I think I would have done something similar, possibly also driving very slowly past a bus stop near a supermarket and laughing at the people waiting. I thought that Prestwick was the only airport in Glasgow anyway?

Prestwick isn't anywhere *near* Glasgow. They call it "Glasgow Prestwick" so they can roffle at tourists coming off planes wondering when Glasgow became a deserted coastal backwater under the banner "Pure Dead Brilliant".

The *actual* Glasgow Glasgow Airport is in Inchinnan, near Paisley, 8 miles from Glasgow. It doesn't have a train station.

Prestwick is only 5 miles closer to central Glasgow than Edinburgh airport (thanks AA).

it's a nice drive out from glasgow to prestwick, though. well: as nice as zooming through ayrshire gets. ok, the scenery's not the most exciting but it's quite a fun road (at least, it was at 6.30am on saturday, which was the last time i did it). and, ahem, i don't think there are any cameras. maybe one.

christ, i'm turning into an A77 bore. fuck.

train tickets are teh fux-all from what i remember. but whatever you do, don't arrive on a sunday. it's all specially timed so the train leaves just as you're pegging it along the walkway thing, meaning you have to wait for an hour under the stairs in a stinky wee metal shed. brr, i hate prestwick.

Also: if you're coming in on Ryanair, show your boarding pass on the train for a half-price discount. Not many people know this, sometimes including the guards so be arsy if required. It does exist, honestly, and I think the end price is less than a fiver.

The trains are quite nice when you're on them, and do whizz you to Central, but like Fiendish says the Sunday service is plums.

this conversation actually happened, about a year ago, when i was flying to dublin.

me: "hello there, mr food bloke. can i have one of those pies?"
bloke: "no."
me: "?!"
bloke: "pies is lunch food. we're only doing breakfast now."
me: "what time does lunch start?"
bloke: "noon."
me: "it's 11.58."
bloke: "yus. breakfast time."
me: "look. the pie's sitting there. why can't i have it?"
bloke [not arsey, just painfully shocked]: "but ... but ... pies is lunch food. before noon is breakfast."
me: "right."
[taps foot, whistles, scratches arse for two minutes]
me: "can i have that pie, please?"
bloke: "certainly, sir. that'll be £8."

If your train is due in 15 minutes and it's not worth going back into the airport, stay on the bridge where it's warmer and dryer and look down the track. When you see your train coming (you can see the next station along the line from up there), stroll down the escalator and out onto the platform, beating the people in the cold shed who won't have spotted it yet. I've flown from Prestwick a few times before, can you tell?

I think it's £2.60 single if you've got your Ryanair printout. You have to have the bit of paper - they won't accept "this is my booking reference" as proof, even though it's good enough for the airline.

Also, I'm sure you already know that Prestwick Airport is the only place in Britain ever visited by Elvis.

I have tons of free time to take off work and can easily come down to Prestwick to get you in my sadly-nameless Fiesta. The A77 is a fab road and even if it wasn't it's better than being in work. If anyone wants to come with me and tie it in with a visit to a garden centre, there are two very nice ones in the vicinity of Prestwick.

Alternatively, if your flight times are not that work-friendly, you can get off the Prestwick-Glasgow train at Paisley and I can skive off work and show you some "lovely" pubs until Madchen gets out of work. (Madchen, should I take them to Langs?)

a cab to glasgow from prestwick will actually set you back about £70 so don't do it. i got one once in an emergency and nearly had a heart attack when presented with the total.

the facilities at prestwick have actually improved quite a bit recently. they're pretty much on a par with the awfulness that is glasgow airport's catering now.
