I'm just saying, Molly's makes what is arguably the best cheeseburger in NY and it comes with a side of mashed potatoes.

molly's is also like 25 blocks from hurting's office tho.

so yeah I went back, it ended up only being an hour of my life cause I got lucky w/ trains but the moment of realization was pretty horrible

i like that Hot Bird now has a bbq restaurant attached to it. that is v convenient, even if their fries are kinda wack.

but yeah its decent BBQ and not too pricey and theyll take it over to you at hot bird if u tell em where youre seating

which i guess isn't what the sign that gives hot bird its name is talking about since it says no frying. i just want a place called hot bird to have it.

huh, well the bbq place next to hot bird is owned by the peaches folks

so it's basically smoke joint? still a little mad at those guys for closing little piggy which was the best place to eat in the neighborhood for a while, but smoke joint is always packed so i guess they know what they're doing.

i think its better than smoke joint but i havent eaten at smoke joint in a while. definitely cheaper.

Recommend me a bar that has good low-key dance nights (as opposed to a club) and where you could conceivably start dancing earlier than midnight with a decent crowd there.

I (sorta) regret to inform you that my bar HiFi will be closing at the end of this calendar month, ending my 23 year tenure at 169 Avenue A. All parties booked before the end of the month will happen as planned. The story? Quite simply, the renovations we undertook a few years ago to reinvigorate the business were not successful in putting us back on a good financial footing.The generation of people who inhabit this neighborhood on weekends remain mostly indifferent to the place. HiFi seems to occupy a place square in the middle between “dive bar” and “mixologist paradise” — and while I hoped that would help us have a broad appeal to the newbies, it turns out that it translated as utilitarian (aka boring) to their tastes.

Can someone familiar with the current state of NYC bardom explain to me what he's talking about? What kind of bar do the people who live in the Brownies/HiFi neighborhood (or "inhabit it on weekends" -- are those different people?) now want? What does it mean for a bar to be "utilitarian" and why is that bad?

I think he means they either want $13 cocktails or to be drinking with grandpas.

I went to hi fi once in the past two years or so and despite the renovations(?) it still had the vibe of an old neighborhood place (which it was) and not really the kind of joint where 20 somethings would hang out given the multitude of options on Ave A, where there are more bars per block than almost anywhere else in manhattan.

It did have a really cool, intimate space for music in the back.

If you don't mind going to the Upper East Side, Ethyl's Alcohol is the bomb. Excellent retro-oriented dj's plus go go dancers. Actually has quite an old East Village vibe.

They were trying to portray the original location on MacDougal St. Now it's on Christopher St.

for awhile, the Kettle of Fish was the old (second) Folk City.

I was looking to see if Subway Soul Club is still around, but they host it in Gowanus now.
