ditto, can't remember life before cable

Mordy, Monday, 23 April 2012 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

about to live w/out cable, debating buying a XBox and using my parents HBO Go account or just hitting TPB

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 23 April 2012 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

I guess I could pirate this but I don't know if I want to be that guy. Is it just me or is the demographic this show is mirroring the least likely to actually watch it on HBO?

I'd say about half my friends have dropped cable in lieu of broadcast tv/netflix/hulu/etc

mh, Monday, 23 April 2012 15:52 (fourteen years ago)

At 11:30 on Sunday, this is a show least likely to be watched by anyone.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 23 April 2012 16:15 (fourteen years ago)

recorded at 9 or 9:30 CST, which makes it 10 or 10:30 Eastern, not abnormal for HBO's Sunday night lineup

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 23 April 2012 16:16 (fourteen years ago)

that was really good

horseshoe, Monday, 23 April 2012 16:22 (fourteen years ago)

i'm not a character in one of your novels; stop staring at my face so hard!

horseshoe, Monday, 23 April 2012 16:23 (fourteen years ago)

watched this last night

did not like this TV show

l0u1s j0rdan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 23 April 2012 17:38 (fourteen years ago)

this ep was great, really well done, tighter than the pilot, better/clearer satire
i wasn't sure with the first ep, but now i can say: lena dunham is really fucking funny

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Monday, 23 April 2012 18:08 (fourteen years ago)

i loved how the doctor dealt with hannah - perfect

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Monday, 23 April 2012 18:10 (fourteen years ago)

yeah even though "maybe i'm not scared of AIDS. maybe what i a really am is...wanting...AIDS" made me laugh harder than anything else in the episode, "that is an incredibly silly thing to say" was the perfect response.

horseshoe, Monday, 23 April 2012 18:13 (fourteen years ago)

i have not read this thread or watched this show but it doesn't look like this column was posted which is weird bc it's ta-nehisi coates and everything he writes should be posted

JIM THOMETHEUS (zachlyon), Monday, 23 April 2012 22:23 (fourteen years ago)

it was posted, but it is probably buried at this point

horseshoe, Monday, 23 April 2012 22:28 (fourteen years ago)

horseshoe, Monday, 23 April 2012 22:28 (fourteen years ago)

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Monday, 23 April 2012 22:30 (fourteen years ago)

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Monday, 23 April 2012 22:31 (fourteen years ago)

oh darn ctrl-f failed me, nvm

JIM THOMETHEUS (zachlyon), Monday, 23 April 2012 22:37 (fourteen years ago)

the british chick is still an annoying fantastic figure but she's really funny when she's pwning people

thomp, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 01:20 (fourteen years ago)

OK this is winning me over, I think.

I even sort of like Shoshanna now.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 01:27 (fourteen years ago)

lol the "I should have gotten pregnant by now maybe I'm barren" line.

OK this is hilarious and Lena reminds me so much of myself at that age it's sort of freaking me out.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 01:36 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, I love this.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 01:42 (fourteen years ago)

lena is the one who is basically a capable adult, right

thomp, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 02:17 (fourteen years ago)

uh

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 02:18 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, I don't know about that but I don't think most 24 year olds are capable adults these days. I sure as hell wasn't.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 02:21 (fourteen years ago)

oh, lena as in the actress who plays hannah who is also the director and creator of the show and there in the thread title

thomp, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 02:24 (fourteen years ago)

Ha, yes. Who were you thinking of?

wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 02:26 (fourteen years ago)

the one whose name i never managed to catch. on looking it up it appears her name is 'marnie'

thomp, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 02:28 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, I realized that must have been who you meant.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 02:28 (fourteen years ago)

"i don't know what to say. i hit a puppy once with my car. i only had a learner's permit"

Mordy, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 02:41 (fourteen years ago)

YES. That line was so perfect.

The whole STI thing from her Googling to be obsessed to rambling on at the doctor was spot on. Also agree with whomever said the doc was great.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 02:45 (fourteen years ago)

stuff that comes up the sides of condoms

boy, was that Dan Fielding hungry for some cake! (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 02:46 (fourteen years ago)

This ep was p great although it seemed v implausible that someone as smart as her would make a joke to someone about them being a date rapist, period, let alone in a job interview.

Time, a group with Jam and Lewis (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 03:18 (fourteen years ago)

i still find the stuff between Lena and the guy she likes to be pretty dark and difficult to watch. (i know they referred to the guy by name at least once during the episode but idr what is was.)

one thing i liked was that Lena seemed to be negotiating these sexual margins - like what she allows/chooses and what she won't. so he can talk dirty to her in a way that she didn't maybe seem totally into, and cum on her breasts, but she reserves the right to be blase about it (paraphrase: 'well it seems like you want to cum there so...') or to make jokes about it in the morning. jokes that he, btw, doesn't really get/remember bc despite her claiming that he's very present with her, he really isn't. and then that shows up in her anxieties about having an STD - that it could happen in the margins, in the second where he's not wearing the condom, or in the sides that comes up. that maybe the anxieties about where she can/will draw the line in the bedroom is showing up on a literally physiological level - her health. also maybe in that weird moment in the interview where she brings up date rape even tho it's clear that it's really not interview appropriate. i don't believe that she's too spectrum'y to know not to talk about date rape with someone interviewing you that you met a minute ago. more that it's compulsive bc maybe it's on her mind?

Mordy, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 03:19 (fourteen years ago)

too spectrum'y to not know* i mean

Mordy, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 03:20 (fourteen years ago)

hahaa that sex scene was so great! "If you're touching yourself and you think you're going to come, you better fucking call me first" "You want me to call you?"

Dan I., Tuesday, 24 April 2012 03:36 (fourteen years ago)

jesus can we ban "spectrum'y" right along with "rapey"

Poor Turrican (some dude), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 03:37 (fourteen years ago)

http://www.indianinthemachine.com/sananda2.jpg

"No."

Mordy, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 03:37 (fourteen years ago)

This was a much better ep and White Sea at the end was nice as I have been listening to that a lot recently

kinder, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 05:36 (fourteen years ago)

i read a facebook comment thread saying exactly the opposite as the above reactions: 'aw crap, GIRLS got way worse after the excellent pilot'. hm.

j., Tuesday, 24 April 2012 06:10 (fourteen years ago)

i have never heard of this show, is it good?

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 09:03 (fourteen years ago)

yesterday this girl on mushrooms kept saying that this show was her life

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 09:33 (fourteen years ago)

. i don't believe that she's too spectrum'y to know not to talk about date rape with someone interviewing you that you met a minute ago. more that it's compulsive bc maybe it's on her mind?

Maybe, yeah. They were joking around and being really familiar right up until then which would have meant her guard was down a bit. Also, nerves.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 10:17 (fourteen years ago)

what in the devil does "spectrum'y" mean?

Number None, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 10:20 (fourteen years ago)

That someone has some type of autism and fall somewhere on the autism spectrum. Unfortunately become fairly common to see it used it to describe vaguely awkward or socially unaware people instead of, you know, people who actually have autism. See also "on the spectrum".

wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 10:24 (fourteen years ago)

Oh. That's horrible

Number None, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 10:31 (fourteen years ago)

^^^

Poor Turrican (some dude), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 10:35 (fourteen years ago)

much better + more affectionate than aspie imho

Mordy, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 12:01 (fourteen years ago)

but no less assholish, sadly.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 12:21 (fourteen years ago)

i sincerely apologize to anyone i offended by using the word 'spectrum'y'

Mordy, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 12:34 (fourteen years ago)

I mentioned it above, but her character reminds me very much of the love interest Greta Gerwig played in "Greenberg," which had an awkward, passive sex scene very much in line with this show. Gerwig's character had a soul, though, and was to this viewer a bit more compelling than this goofy exercise.
