Also felliani pass for everton's 4th was class.

yeah, it was eerily similar. It makes sense to play them as pair for England too.

Number None, Monday, 23 April 2012 13:53 (fourteen years ago)

michael cox says as much (re welbeck and rooney) in the guardian.

mizzell, Monday, 23 April 2012 13:56 (fourteen years ago)

Wasn't this season the first time that Ferguson had fielded an unchanged side? Or is that something I dreamt?

fun loving and xtremely tolrant (Billy Dods), Monday, 23 April 2012 14:00 (fourteen years ago)

and they should have bought a cisse or a jelavic or someone in january.

someone needs to make a gif of motd's slow motion version of nasri's finger waging celebration. creepily long finger, moves like he was flinging around a stretch armstrong toy.

Thoughts? You must have loads. (a hoy hoy), Monday, 23 April 2012 14:01 (fourteen years ago)

dunno i think in 25 years he has done it before once or twice

hopefully won't see Ashley Young again this season

Number None, Monday, 23 April 2012 14:06 (fourteen years ago)

Not even diving for England in the Euros?

Charles Kennedy Jumped Up, He Called 'Oh No'. (Tom D.), Monday, 23 April 2012 14:07 (fourteen years ago)

sure, if he's getting booked for it

Number None, Monday, 23 April 2012 14:08 (fourteen years ago)

Had to laugh at Alan Green expressing outrage over Ashley Young's diving antics and saying that even if he did playing for England he would still be as outraged, yeah like you were when Owen and Gerrard used to do it...

Charles Kennedy Jumped Up, He Called 'Oh No'. (Tom D.), Monday, 23 April 2012 14:09 (fourteen years ago)

I expect we'll see three in midfield at City though so Welbeck is probably going to lose out

Number None, Monday, 23 April 2012 14:13 (fourteen years ago)

ok i actually felt bad for liverpool watching that. they should have won that 5-0.

Thoughts? You must have loads. (a hoy hoy), Monday, 23 April 2012 14:16 (fourteen years ago)

or alternatively Rooney may just end up playing a lot deeper. Utd will be playing for the nil nil anyway I think

Number None, Monday, 23 April 2012 14:16 (fourteen years ago)

MOTD2 indie may be the worst genre of music.

Thoughts? You must have loads. (a hoy hoy), Monday, 23 April 2012 14:21 (fourteen years ago)

"We're still trying to get hold of our own training ground and trying to insure the exclusive right to develop our own players."

Brendan Rogers on MOTD2. Seems fascinating that a Prem club doesn't have their own training ground. God knows how 92 professional clubs out there still work.

Thoughts? You must have loads. (a hoy hoy), Monday, 23 April 2012 14:27 (fourteen years ago)

Quite a lot of them are teetering on the brink of extinction

soccer AM indie would win that surely

theres probably a rizla thin difference between the two but soccer AM is more kasabiany so yeah that

The term “hipster racism” from Carmen Van Kerckhove at Racialicious (nakhchivan), Monday, 23 April 2012 14:30 (fourteen years ago)

Soccer AM still exists?

Number None, Monday, 23 April 2012 14:30 (fourteen years ago)

MOTD2 is more koscielny

Charles Kennedy Jumped Up, He Called 'Oh No'. (Tom D.), Monday, 23 April 2012 14:31 (fourteen years ago)

i think it does because ilx poster 'darraghmac' watches it religiously, iirc

is tim lovejoy still on it? because he is horrible.

Thoughts? You must have loads. (a hoy hoy), Monday, 23 April 2012 14:39 (fourteen years ago)

last night they played an old corporate indie song and what was it, I can't remember

oh, yes, 'Great Things'! which I love, really!

the pinefox, Monday, 23 April 2012 14:41 (fourteen years ago)

Really? I was talking (very briefly) to one of Echobelly yesterday!

Tim, Monday, 23 April 2012 14:44 (fourteen years ago)

the pinefox is quite right about redknapp -- he is an in group/out group manager who has his favourites and then another pool of disaffected failed transfers who he begrudgingly calls upon in extremis

when he starts to alienate ppl like adebayor and walker then u know things are bad

fyi the singer of The Pooh Sticks was pumped about having one of his songs played on last night's MOTD2 in a bit lauding the team he supports (Swansea)

Jelavic first player to score in five consecutive away games for EFC (incl Wembley) since Duncan McKenzie in 1977! He's awfully good. But I'm not getting my hopes up because Johnson, Bent, Saha and Yakubu all started something like this... McBride and Jô (though not Joe McBride) in smaller, on-loan doses too. If Vaughan and Anichebe had stayed fit, perhaps... Beckford and Beattie had half a spell like this each, maybe.

Genuinely quite excited to have James McFadden back! All we need now is some ridiculous goal-of-the-season volley from him on the final day vs Newcastle.

Michael Jones, Monday, 23 April 2012 14:52 (fourteen years ago)

xxp assuming this whole thing is true and not just twitter malarkey it will (in the longer term) usurp his extended dumping on Pav as the most damning example of the in/out thing you mention

W. E. B. Du Bois Goals Panel (DJ Mencap), Monday, 23 April 2012 14:54 (fourteen years ago)

Thanks Nakchivan!

Tim, yes they did. I bought the CD 45 in a cardboard sleeve in 1995 and liked it a lot and I think, really, I still do.

Just remembered that last night Robbie Savage ACTUALLY SAID - yes, ACTUALLY SAID:

"Liverpool for me are FIVE OR SIX QUALITY PLAYERS away from challenging for Champions' League ... that's FOURTH PLACE, not the title!"

yes he actually said Liverpool were 5 or 6 quality players off challenging.

the pinefox, Monday, 23 April 2012 14:55 (fourteen years ago)

That's extraordinary! We were riffing on this precise phrase a week ago in New York!

Michael Jones, Monday, 23 April 2012 14:59 (fourteen years ago)

that's true generally but i don't think it's quite what's happening now - seems to me redknapp is being decidedly stubborn in a crumbling situation and is subconsciously leaving the players out there to be blamed. mexican standoff between the players saying "fuck you you sold us a dream and now ur off, ps you're a dinosaur anyway", arry's saying "fack off this worked before ps i'm untouchable" basically

r|t|c, Monday, 23 April 2012 15:18 (fourteen years ago)

saying jelavic is a bargain and spurs should have signed him is kinda 20/20 hindsight btw - loads of clubs looked at him and were unconvinced, little knowing that it was all part of a deceptively casual berbzishness

i mean i'm not saying it was more luck than judgement on everton's part but i think he's done much better than they expected

r|t|c, Monday, 23 April 2012 15:23 (fourteen years ago)

i agree, but spurs should have bought someone who was scoring somewhere instead of saha

mizzell, Monday, 23 April 2012 15:27 (fourteen years ago)

cisse and moussa sow the most obvious choices probably.

mizzell, Monday, 23 April 2012 15:28 (fourteen years ago)

I can beat pinefox's oracle feats:

You know Spurs *really* could win the league

Europa League? Next season?

pandemic, Monday, 23 April 2012 15:49 (fourteen years ago)

I hope my oracular feats are recorded somewhere. I think I originally thought 6th behind Liverpool, then 5th behind Chelsea, or at best 4th behind Chelsea or Arsenal; but basicall that Chelsea and Arsenal were immovable.

I think winning the Europa League would be a fantastic achievement for someone. United, City, LFC, none have managed to make the final. If a UK team does win it it will be a big deal, really.

the pinefox, Monday, 23 April 2012 15:58 (fourteen years ago)

I know Fulham were in the final which was fab in itself

the pinefox, Monday, 23 April 2012 15:59 (fourteen years ago)

and Middlesbrough

Let's Talk About Socks (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Monday, 23 April 2012 16:06 (fourteen years ago)

I recall half-watching that Boro UEFA Cup final in a pub with various ILXors and everyone being rather pleased that, on this occasion, they only managed to magically transform a three-goal deficit into...a four-goal deficit. Was it just because of McLaren that we were so anti?

Michael Jones, Monday, 23 April 2012 16:12 (fourteen years ago)

Mike, I thought it was just you and me watching it! This would be May 2006 wouldn't it. Definitely the era when ilxors were swapping a lot of soccer stickers.

We were very anti-Mc and thought him a disaster waiting to happen to England ... didn't we?

the pinefox, Monday, 23 April 2012 16:14 (fourteen years ago)

NBS, surely the EL, UEFA Cup or whatever was a different format back then - fewer matches? the sheer number of games seems to be what makes it so hard now.

the pinefox, Monday, 23 April 2012 16:15 (fourteen years ago)

ps I was wrong, a whole bunch of ilxors were there. Did Boro really lose that single game 0-4?

the pinefox, Monday, 23 April 2012 16:18 (fourteen years ago)

Yes! And this after their aggregate recoveries from 0-3 or 1-4 or whatever in earlier rounds.

Michael Jones, Monday, 23 April 2012 16:21 (fourteen years ago)

I have turned up a written account of pretty much every amusing thing you said that night. How about this for a highlight:

Cabbage praises Xabi Alonso and Dean Kiley for liking 'indie', and says that most players like Nelly or Kelly [?]
Mike: or Belly !! Feed the tree ... and it will grow.

^
This must have been the same motif as 'feed the Yak and he will score' or whatever - 6 years ago?

the pinefox, Monday, 23 April 2012 16:25 (fourteen years ago)

Were you taking notes for a pub-based sitcom?

Michael Jones, Monday, 23 April 2012 16:40 (fourteen years ago)

Kelly [?]

That would be R Kelly

Number None, Monday, 23 April 2012 16:42 (fourteen years ago)

Usually.

the Kaiser, arguing against vegetarianism: 'we're naturally omnivorous ... and no other animal seeks to be humane'.
Mike: it's true - lions seek to be leonine!

the pinefox, Monday, 23 April 2012 16:51 (fourteen years ago)

commentary as 4th goal goes in:

"it’s the last nail in the coffin ... they’re *building* the coffin ... Steve McClaren is lying in state ... it’s going to be nailed together with plastic filler, that’s even harder to pull out ..."

I can hear Mike saying that now.

the pinefox, Monday, 23 April 2012 16:52 (fourteen years ago)

just had a look at xabi alonso's twitter feed. lol he's such an indie kid.
