story of our season

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 22 April 2012 16:33 (fourteen years ago)

and yet i still can't quite believe it.

Chris, Sunday, 22 April 2012 16:56 (fourteen years ago)

61% possession, 28 shots. Lovely. All the teams down to Stoke will overtake us at this rate. We'll finish 14th and win 2 cups. Don't know whether to laugh or cry.

pandemic, Sunday, 22 April 2012 16:58 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not sure how we're managing to hang on in 8th tbh, the pressure buildup is getting massive in behind. We're like the cork in our FA Cup celebratory champagne.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 22 April 2012 17:06 (fourteen years ago)

nice to see Roy finally getting a win at Anfield though

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 22 April 2012 17:07 (fourteen years ago)

Lol

46pts from 34 games is pretty much an automatic sacking really.

pandemic, Sunday, 22 April 2012 17:08 (fourteen years ago)

i've opted for laughing

Chris, Sunday, 22 April 2012 17:09 (fourteen years ago)

Liverpool have a p generous run-in but none of their games are more self-evidently winnable than WBA at home so yeah

kinda stoked (npi) for the midtable madness actually

W. E. B. Du Bois Goals Panel (DJ Mencap), Sunday, 22 April 2012 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

14th and 2 cups? Would you settle for 11th and one?

When was the last time EFC scored four in consecutive league games? Kendall's first era? It's all gone a bit ridic. Would gladly transplant Osman's Easter Monday curler and Jelavic's header today to Wembley last Saturday and manfully accept the loss of a point.

xxxp

Michael Jones, Sunday, 22 April 2012 17:11 (fourteen years ago)

The cups are the thing to have obviously; the league is just embarrassing since it's of no consequence anymore. I'd say that a low finish (i.e. below 8th) could have the benefit of forcing change - but my fear is that that change will be Suarez leaving and nothing else.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 22 April 2012 17:15 (fourteen years ago)

Suarez leaving might be a good idea

Number None, Sunday, 22 April 2012 17:16 (fourteen years ago)

Nah, Suarez is the main creative player. We need a finisher. But seeing as we've just spent/wasted £100m can't see us buying one.

Obviously I'm seeing this through LFC lensed glasses but I find it difficult to believe that Newcastle create more chances than us. Difference is they actually have a couple of guys who do the difficult bit and score.

pandemic, Sunday, 22 April 2012 17:20 (fourteen years ago)

I was jokin' about the cups.

To answer my own question: Aug '99: 4-1 and 4-0 home wins over Southampton and Wimbledon. The Jeffers-Campbell dream strike force!

Michael Jones, Sunday, 22 April 2012 17:22 (fourteen years ago)

Kevin Campbell! Was that when he came at the winter break and saved Everton from relegation?

pandemic, Sunday, 22 April 2012 17:25 (fourteen years ago)

August '99, so it must have been Jan '99 when he arrived. Was that the Mike Walker era?

pandemic, Sunday, 22 April 2012 17:26 (fourteen years ago)

God, i'm 5 years out!! Hangs head

pandemic, Sunday, 22 April 2012 17:27 (fourteen years ago)

if Everton could start a campaign like that now you'd be laughing

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 22 April 2012 17:28 (fourteen years ago)

Wiki tells me Campbell arrived in March '99, on loan, and scored 8 in 9 games!
Eventually lost his place to some youngster called Wayne Rooney, never made it iirc.

pandemic, Sunday, 22 April 2012 17:30 (fourteen years ago)

Spurs are officially uncatchable now btw, it's no St Totteringham's day but congrats to you lot I suppose

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 22 April 2012 17:32 (fourteen years ago)

I think that even Spurs fans have evolved beyond 'finishing above LFC' = a good season. But congrats anyway.

Where's that Newcastle thread that made an appearance at some point last year? Didn't we have one Newcastle fan? Kudos to that dude.

pandemic, Sunday, 22 April 2012 17:36 (fourteen years ago)

Connor: we have to be competitive the last 3 games ... because league rules demand it.

Are they gonna dock them points if they under perform? Who could even tell?

Btw am pouring one out for Mr NV.

pandemic, Sunday, 22 April 2012 17:40 (fourteen years ago)

lol on googling I am disappointed that the M Knopfler poll option is not in fact one song

SportsDirect @ Official Newcastle United forum - FA Cup winners 2011/12, Europa League here we come!

Can't believe I was actually undermbitious for them!

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 22 April 2012 17:43 (fourteen years ago)

Ah, missed all the SuperKev chat, I was Wii Boxing with the girls ("Fight him in the face, Dad!"). Yep, as above - spring '99 was when he arrived and saved the season. First two-thirds of 99-2k was in a similar vein (we were 7th at the end of Feb, Kev-Fran had provided 18 goals, only Man Utd were outscoring us as a team) and then it all fell apart.

Michael Jones, Sunday, 22 April 2012 17:44 (fourteen years ago)

Feeling for Noodle Vague right now.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Sunday, 22 April 2012 18:43 (fourteen years ago)

today was more in the nature of a relief, getting the finishing blow done and not fucking up City's title challenge. we all knew they were relegated 2 months ago - at least.

now all that remains is to employ some terrible journeyman manager and maunder away with the remains of this shitty squad in the Championship for a season or two until Morgan gives it neck.

aboulia banks (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 22 April 2012 18:45 (fourteen years ago)

is purslow still hanging round?

Chris, Sunday, 22 April 2012 18:46 (fourteen years ago)

nah but seriously, you reach a point where you're actually, briefly, optimistic because you think maybe there will be some thought and a plan to go forward and something to feel good about it, and at least we're not due for administration any time soon.

aboulia banks (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 22 April 2012 18:47 (fourteen years ago)

are you still talking about wolves?

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 22 April 2012 18:48 (fourteen years ago)

i am now but

aboulia banks (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 22 April 2012 18:49 (fourteen years ago)

maybe Steve Morgan's been so depressed by Liverpool this season it's distracted him from trying to keep the club he owns in the Prem

aboulia banks (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 22 April 2012 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

is the stadium redevelopment still going ahead?

Chris, Sunday, 22 April 2012 18:51 (fourteen years ago)

it's done, shd be open for the new season so there'll be plenty of space

aboulia banks (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 22 April 2012 18:52 (fourteen years ago)

Feeling for you bro

Commiserations, Noodle Vague. Fear for crowds at Molineux next season unless you get a flyer. Was surprised by how many empty seats there were today for your decider, even given it was on the telly.

Manfred Mann meets Man Parrish (ithappens), Sunday, 22 April 2012 19:41 (fourteen years ago)

jelavic's header was great. i think rooney took his with his face. i still find rooney with a hairstyle to be a bit distressing, but i understand if he doesn't want to muss it up.

michael nyman cat (Merdeyeux), Sunday, 22 April 2012 21:11 (fourteen years ago)

danny welbeck is a very talented player

could well replace rooney if they have the sense to get rid of that fucking parboiled pig foetus and his slimy entourage

diafiyhm (darraghmac), Sunday, 22 April 2012 21:14 (fourteen years ago)

i was hoping id expressed my high regard for welbeck before that

hes still a work in progress but he just doesnt look like yr average english centre forward at all

The term “hipster racism” from Carmen Van Kerckhove at Racialicious (nakhchivan), Sunday, 22 April 2012 21:15 (fourteen years ago)

dea gea wasnt completely played cuz they were some fine finishes by everton.....but still, he was maybe a bit playable today

The term “hipster racism” from Carmen Van Kerckhove at Racialicious (nakhchivan), Sunday, 22 April 2012 21:16 (fourteen years ago)

I do like him but he's entirely melded with Sturridge in my mind and Sturridge was rotten yesterday

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 22 April 2012 21:17 (fourteen years ago)

well as yr boy michael cox sez, di matteo likes to have sensible disciplined types on the wings (kalou/ramires) whereas vyaszb'wasz was happy to have sturridge doing his sulky poacherr routine in the inside right channel

The term “hipster racism” from Carmen Van Kerckhove at Racialicious (nakhchivan), Sunday, 22 April 2012 21:23 (fourteen years ago)

first ever ILX mention hidden in a misspelling:

Peter "One Dart" Manley (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics) wrote this on thread Liverpool won't be on dis ting 2008/09 on board I Love Everything on Nov 15, 2008

Let's all get overexcited about Danny Wellbeck.

boxall, Sunday, 22 April 2012 21:26 (fourteen years ago)

I do like him but he's entirely melded with Sturridge in my mind

I don't see the similarity

I proposed that pair as two-thirds of an England front III, with Rooney, and now I can't remember which is which. Like Jason Wilcox and Stuart Ripley, or any German club side that isn't Bayern.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 22 April 2012 21:35 (fourteen years ago)

stuart ripley had stupid hair iirc maybe it was spiky or something? jason wilcox i can remember absolutely nothing about

paul warhurst, who was paul warhurst

The term “hipster racism” from Carmen Van Kerckhove at Racialicious (nakhchivan), Sunday, 22 April 2012 21:45 (fourteen years ago)

FORMER Blackburn Rovers player Stuart Ripley is looking forward to quite a different career after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) this week with a combined honours degree in Law and French.

Stuart, who hung up his boots in the summer of 2002, won the Premiership with Blackburn Rovers in 1995 and also played for England during his spell at the club.

He now intends to continue his studies at UCLan's Lancashire Law School, with a postgraduate Legal Practice Course.
