I think what I miss is just the clarity of someone saying "just sb'ed (poster)," as opposed to the notion that anyone would look at the SBs, count to 51, or actually ban anybody. It filled a valuable niche in the ILXicon. Maybe I'll just start saying it without FPing anyone.

in 6.5 months of flag post, exactly 0 posters have been banned, right?
― congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 12 July 2012 21:35 (thirteen years ago)
seems like maybe time for talk about whether this means "flag post" (as opposed to "suggest ban") is working
― congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 12 July 2012 21:36 (thirteen years ago)
or possibly not working
Flagged your post to get the moderators' attention. Hope it helps.

otm. suggest ban was working. i used to think rebranding didn't work.
― deems irreverent (darraghmac), Thursday, 12 July 2012 21:38 (thirteen years ago)
I kinda didn't get the point of Suggest Ban either though. People would behave badly, take a break, and then come back and behave badly again. I guess it was better because there were breaks?
― polyphonic, Thursday, 12 July 2012 21:41 (thirteen years ago)
precisely

Also people behaved better.

I have to say I feel like the religious anti-SB crew have been kinda vindicated by "Flag Post" - fewer people get banned, but ilx feels more self-regulated, chill-er than it was under SB. When people reach the "no, seriously, stfu" stage the mods have issued temp-bans and they've worked out fine imo. There are a bunch of other factors that could possibly be in play but it seems to me like removing the threat of getting kicked out by one's fellow posters has resulted in a more civil board to some extent - how great an extent is hard for me to say, I don't post as much as I used to & there's probably plenty of clusterfuck-y stuff I don't give enough of a shit about now to click on the thread. But I feel like I ought to say, anti-SB crew, you seem to have been kind of otm to me, your kvetching was not in vain

― k3vin k., Thursday, 12 July 2012 21:50 (thirteen years ago)
who has been temp banned?
personally ilx does not feel more chill to me
― congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 12 July 2012 21:51 (thirteen years ago)
it is weird, though, how the same group of people can use something completely differently just because its label has changed

i completely disagree! i actually disagree with everything after this as well but even using c&p exhausts me this late at night/this far into the bottle of glenfiddich

ilx def feels more boring than ever, i'll concede that
― ♆ (gr8080), Thursday, 12 July 2012 22:01 (thirteen years ago)
I keep wandering in to threads where people are arguing about the posting histories of posters who aren't in the thread instead of things that are on topic; idk if that's been on the uptick but it's pretty much the worst thing to read on the internet.
(And yet I keep reading because I have to bookmark the last post honestly.)

Despite my carping yesterday, I think that FP works reasonably well.
I certainly use it more, and it enables me to be a lot more chilled than I used to be. Because it no longer feels like "I am voting to have this person removed from our community" (which is an awful thing to feel the weight of that decision) and more like "I find this behaviour utterly unacceptable." And once I've pushed that flag, I can walk away. Like I no longer feel obligated to reply to a person whose post I find objectionable, I have shifted the decision of acceptability onto someone else, and it's a (hopefully neutral) moderator's call.
ILX has veered from "mostly boring" in the past few weeks to "abominable shithole" today specifically but I don't think that's down to FlagPost, I think that's down to today's most popular topic.

Wouldn’t it be funny if you got flagged by like, 5 posters right now? Like right now?
― ♆ (gr8080), Thursday, 12 July 2012 22:07 (thirteen years ago)
sigh

It's downright hilarious to reference a rape joke directly at a rape survivor, isn't it, Grady? It's one of those things that is done so specifically to wind a person up and upset them that I can't even give you the satisfaction of telling you that you've upset me. You've just disappointed me that you chose to use that gambit, knowing that it would deliberately cause pain to a human being. Because causing pain to human beings for LOLs is never not funny!
And I'm going to go to bed now. Because I don't want to do this any more.
― Queue de Cheval (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Thursday, 12 July 2012 22:12 (thirteen years ago)
that was in p poor taste and i regretted it immediately. not that it matters but i did not know you were a rape survivor.
i apologize, wcc.

what i don't get is that the shift from SB to FP was framed as mainly a semantic shift, not a procedural shift. so why have we gone from regular temp-bans based on user feedback to 0 temp-bans based on user feedback?
― congratulations (n/a), Friday, 13 July 2012 18:17 (thirteen years ago)
Because the semantic shift led to a behavioural shift and nobody's hit 50 since, interestingly.

People often reach a "oh fuck OFF" level of annoyance without a single "And this is why I punched him, officer" exemplary post.
― Andrew Farrell, Friday, 13 July 2012 18:41 (thirteen years ago)
^^^it is actually really really interesting - when the word "ban" was taken off the table literally everybody starting acting different, or at least 1) the regular bannees did & 2) the people who used to ban them did
big win for critical theory imo

If we're going to formalise it I'd say (1) or (2) rather than (1) and (2)
― badg, Saturday, 14 July 2012 08:41 (thirteen years ago)
