Has anybody tried using Straight Talk as their carrier? Contract is up in July and I'm seriously considering switching.

anyone recommend any good nutritional apps - most seem to be diet focused, I'm not looking to lose weight more just healthy eating. I started using mynetdiary which is pretty good in that it scans the barcodes and fills out nutritional stuff re: daily amount calories, fats, carbs, proteins, sugars etc but wondered if any other apps
― coal, Tuesday, 22 May 2012 13:21 (fourteen years ago)
myfitnesspal.com. you can either customize your nutrition requirements/preferences at the website or let them autopopulate, and view your progress toward them under the 'daily' link in the app. there's a bar code scanner, and a recipe calculator app integrated on the website. you can make a big pot of stew, say, enter the ingredients and the number of servings, and the nutrition info will all be calculated as you need.

I use the livestrong app.

Anyone know of a nice atlas app? I basically want to be able to have a map of the world at all times on my phone. Ideally it should also have maps by continent and other stuff, for when I feel a sudden urge to know what are Guinea Bissau's neighboring countries. I'd love it if there was a good free one that could be used offline (for when I'm actually traveling). I've had a very basic lookaround and came upon the National Geographic one but while it's got a good avg rating, the three comments i see on the app store don't really make me wanna spend money for it ! So yeah, anyone have good recommendations?

FYI if y'all are looking for any sort of drawing app you'd prob be extremely hard-pressed to find anything as robust and complex (but still p intuitive) as Sketchbook Mobile. It's really a steal at $1.99, too.

love that all the negative reviews are based on people complaining the forecast wasn't quite right
― hot sauce delivery device (mh), Thursday, 12 July 2012 15:39 (thirteen years ago)
no, I guess since I am in Canada it hides it from me so as not to hurt me. I was just searching in the general section. Alas! :)

The forecasts have been pretty accurate. The whole point though is that it doesn't even bother showing you past 3 hours. This is the app to find out if it's going to rain in 20 minutes. It has a radar view. It's really cool and well designed and fun. If it's not raining, it says "this is boring, check out Memphis where there's a storm" or whatever.
I used it all weekend. Silly to be able to say "it's going to start raining in 20 minutes and it's going to last for 15 minutes, but more often than not it was right.
― dan selzer, Thursday, 12 July 2012 16:02 (thirteen years ago)
That's the only kind of weather forecast worth bothering with, in this ridiculous country anyway.
― ledge, Thursday, 12 July 2012 16:05 (thirteen years ago)
I literally timed my saturday night by it. I was out, then drove my girlfriend home with the intention of going back out. While driving it started poring, like TORRENTIAL rain. Odds were I wasn't going to go back out again, but it said it was going to pass, start raining for a bit a few minutes later, then stop, and it did exactly that.

I'm in San Francisco, looking forward to a lot of "fog descending in ten minutes" but not much else

darksky looks awesome; I may have to get this.

i know, i hate buying apps but this kind of specificity makes it super tempting...
― rayuela, Thursday, 12 July 2012 17:38 (thirteen years ago)
I buy apps all the time. Some a buck, some a few, seldom more than $5. I use some sparingly, delete the ones I don't use. The really useful ones I'd readily pay $10 for, but since they usually cost less I just realize that going through a handful of dollar or free apps that I spend a little time on and throw out is part of the price of finding the good ones.
― hot sauce delivery device (mh), Thursday, 12 July 2012 18:22 (thirteen years ago)
the only apps i've bought are like, games i couldn't live without (and hardly use anymore...) and this sleep cycle app because i never hear my alarm(s). oh and instapaper (which i also rarely use now). everything else, free free free
― rayuela, Thursday, 12 July 2012 18:35 (thirteen years ago)
sleep cycle app?
― This clam, stranded on someone’s floor, is trying to dig itself (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 12 July 2012 18:51 (thirteen years ago)

― I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Thursday, 12 July 2012 18:54 (thirteen years ago)
yeah, you fire up the app and put it on your mattress when you go to sleep and it somehow monitors where you are at in your sleep cycle based on your movements...and it starts a 30 minute window of your desired wake up time and wakes you up when you're at the lightest point in your sleep? i don't know how great the science is, but it works okay for me. i don't have a regular mattress, but i think if i did, it would work better. i'm a really heavy sleeper...
― rayuela, Thursday, 12 July 2012 18:55 (thirteen years ago)
xp yeah that link explains it better than i did!
I tried to use it and basically had to punt because I didn't have a free outlet to use to plug in my phone
― I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Thursday, 12 July 2012 18:57 (thirteen years ago)
i mean i still use it in tandem with 2 other alarm clocks, so...it's not like it's the best thing ever.
― rayuela, Thursday, 12 July 2012 18:58 (thirteen years ago)
I use it exclusively, it's great
― catbus otm (gbx), Thursday, 12 July 2012 19:01 (thirteen years ago)
there's talk about it upthread; I thought it had its own dedicated thread but I can't seem to find it
― I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Thursday, 12 July 2012 19:03 (thirteen years ago)
i do and i just bought it. let's see.

I like spending money on apps, but then, I live in a small apartment.
― Alba, Thursday, 12 July 2012 21:54 (thirteen years ago)
I've bought tons of apps. The ones I use most are Instapaper, Reeder, maybe not much else.

― catbus otm (gbx), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 02:58 (thirteen years ago)
does anyone have a solution to this problem:
-i'm going to a cottage for a few days-need to do some work on my MBP when i'm there-may need to email some files from my MBP-no wifi, and my iphone doesnt do mobile hotspot/tethering-can i get files off my computer and onto my phone and email them over 3g?
― Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 16:36 (thirteen years ago)
you can do it over USB. might need to download an app onto your MBP.
― hot slag (lukas), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 16:40 (thirteen years ago)
then where do i 'find' that stuff? on my phone?
― Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 16:57 (thirteen years ago)
An app like FileApp allows you to do this. You do the transfer in iTunes when the phone's connected. It's kind of buried in one of the iPhone tabs there (at work so can't give you step-by-step)
― Alba, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 17:11 (thirteen years ago)
yeah, i can guess how to do it from itunes - but will i be able to email it from fileapp on my phone?
― Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 17:21 (thirteen years ago)
Yes. Just checked on my phone. There's the regular "send by email" action.
― Alba, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 17:44 (thirteen years ago)
thanks!
― Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 17:53 (thirteen years ago)
So yeah - at home now. When you're iPhone's plugged in, you click on it in iTunes, then go to the "Apps" tab. At the bottom, there's a section called "File sharing", in which apps like FileApp show up and allow you to add files.
