Seems like the line gets to the point that the parents thought they would pay her college tuition and then start saving for themselves and their own dreams. If that's a lake house, so be it.

^^^ this. it didn't seem like a particularly selfish line to me

ugh hey i just think, without more info, that the mom sounds spiteful/resentful above and beyond her daughter's crimes. That's all.
― da croupier, Friday, 20 April 2012 21:19 (fourteen years ago)
but srsly, how is wanting a lake house (that you pay for yourself), more privileged and spiteful than wanting a free ride for 2 years+?
― A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Friday, 20 April 2012 21:20 (fourteen years ago)
let moms have lake houses!
I'm personally looking forward to the day when I can tell my son "No more money!" but he's only 9, so I have a few more years to go.

also being played in a comedy, so of course it's going to be ramped up and in public rather than a short private conversation outlining the end of support
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 20 April 2012 21:21 (fourteen years ago)
the emily nussbaum review said judd apatow gave "higher stakes" notes a lot so yeah wacky sitcom hijinks ahoy
― da croupier, Friday, 20 April 2012 21:22 (fourteen years ago)
surely the implication is that hannah is just like her mom? also the m.o. of the show is to not show anyone in a good light, so there's that.
ps college professors have hella entitlement and go their whole careers in stunned disbelief that they don't make as much money as they should
― goole, Friday, 20 April 2012 21:24 (fourteen years ago)
plus are super liberal and elitist
― A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Friday, 20 April 2012 21:24 (fourteen years ago)
"higher stakes" = have the dude try unwanted anal sex
― johnny crunch, Friday, 20 April 2012 21:24 (fourteen years ago)

How long has it been that a half-Jewish, half-gentile cast is considered homogenous and "lily-white"? Maybe 20 years? It's a sign of cultural progress that it's so, in any case.
Just like Vampire Weekend with its Jewish and Persian members.

I think that the older you are, the less inclined you might feel to find too much to hate about this show.
― Acute puppy syndrome (admrl), Saturday, 21 April 2012 00:43 (fourteen years ago)
At worst, it may simply not be your cup of tea
― Acute puppy syndrome (admrl), Saturday, 21 April 2012 00:44 (fourteen years ago)
As the threadstarter, I suggest we now start talking instead about Armando Ianucci's new show Veep, which starts this weekend

― Acute puppy syndrome (admrl), Saturday, 21 April 2012 00:49 (fourteen years ago)
I really want to talk about Veep. I'm all excited. I watched In the Loop for the first time last week and loved it. we should start a thread about it
― Mordy, Saturday, 21 April 2012 01:12 (fourteen years ago)
A thread for Armando Iannucci's VEEP
― Acute puppy syndrome (admrl), Saturday, 21 April 2012 01:32 (fourteen years ago)
ok i watched it on the youtube. lol'd at her dad wearing a stud earring and 'groovy lifestyle' and eigeman was cool. wasn't really laughing at or engaged with anything else. i didnt wanna say it but i related more to the dudes in tiny furniture, and ive definitely behaved like Buff Maynard G. Krebs did in this episode. i dont think the show is for me really but i might watch some more anyway if they keep putting it up on youtube.

Is Tiny Furniture good? TBH I'd never even heard of it before this thread.
― wolf kabob (ENBB), Saturday, 21 April 2012 01:43 (fourteen years ago)
yeah it's pretty solid.
― these pretzels are makeing me horney (Hungry4Ass), Saturday, 21 April 2012 01:43 (fourteen years ago)

― Mordy, Saturday, 21 April 2012 01:50 (fourteen years ago)
lol @ Buff Maynard G. Krebs
― some dude, Saturday, 21 April 2012 01:51 (fourteen years ago)
How have you guys not seen Tiny Furniture? I thought everyone here was cosmopolitan, metropolitan, clued-in, wired up and media savvy. Are some of you in the provinces?

Are the parents really not supposed to come off as, like, logical and correct here? Like I seriously do not think that you are supposed to watch this and *actually* see them as the BIG BAD AWFUL ROTTEN MEANIES or some shit. I mean it was sorta fucked to give her 0 grace period bcz I mean it's going to take more than the length of dinner for someone to find a job, but seriously I think LD is a bit more self-aware than a lot of y'all are giving her credit for.
― Time, a group with Jam and Lewis (Stevie D(eux)), Saturday, 21 April 2012 07:32 (fourteen years ago)
I mean seriously
Also I'm still sort of confused how all of this is coming from ONE (1) THIRTY-MINUTE EPISODE GUYS IT'S NOT A WHOLE THREE SEASONS YET IT'S JUST ONE EP JUST CTFO
― Time, a group with Jam and Lewis (Stevie D(eux)), Saturday, 21 April 2012 07:37 (fourteen years ago)
i felt like the first scene could have stood to be a lot more excruciating than it was. though tbf it was pretty excruciating. points for the really forced "and it's so nice to see you" stuff. also dunham's mouth-full "mmm a growing girl!" or whatever - yes, v writerly
i didn't make it through to the end of the episode because all of the scenes with the 'british' girl appalled me
― thomp, Saturday, 21 April 2012 10:43 (fourteen years ago)
'british'? the actress was born and raised in england afaik
― some dude, Saturday, 21 April 2012 10:47 (fourteen years ago)
o, i know that
― thomp, Saturday, 21 April 2012 10:52 (fourteen years ago)
