it's genuinely amazing. i'm not sure it works, entirely, but it's brilliant and p much sui generis.

BEMORE SUPER FABBY (contenderizer), Friday, 13 April 2012 16:47 (fourteen years ago)

if you have Hulu Plus, that's where you should watch Dreyer's Vampyr ... the versions on Netflix Instant and elsewhere are awful.

kurwa mać (Polish for "long life") (Eisbaer), Friday, 13 April 2012 16:47 (fourteen years ago)

my list of films I'd like to see before voting is over 50. guess that's not gonna happen huh.

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Friday, 13 April 2012 16:52 (fourteen years ago)

I just wanted to remind people that Jacob's Ladder is on the nomination list and is a stone-cold bad-ass movie (for a long time I considered it my favorite movie)

an independent online phenomenon (DJP), Friday, 13 April 2012 16:53 (fourteen years ago)

The bigger the island of knowledge, the greater the shoreline of ignorance. I've been spending every evening closing the major gaps in my horror knowledge but I keep finding more and more I want to see. And then Netflix sent The Apartment DVD and if I don't watch it soon, I'll never watch it.

Tonight: Fright Night (a friend wanted to watch it plus it seems like an important part of cultural literacy).

xp DJP OTM. For a long time I considered it my favorite movie ever, too! Not sure what my favorite is anymore, but I still love Jacob's Ladder to death.

People aren't for comparing, they are for loving. (Je55e), Friday, 13 April 2012 16:54 (fourteen years ago)

lol @ Bishop of Battle, The on the nom list

are you planning to let people vote for segments of anthologies

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Friday, 13 April 2012 16:56 (fourteen years ago)

Rosemary's baby might make my list, but if so, I think it will be low-middle. SPOILER ALERT the creeping into the apartment through the secret door scene totally made me flip out.

HE HATES THESE CANS (Austerity Ponies), Friday, 13 April 2012 16:56 (fourteen years ago)

I really loved jacob's ladder for the first half but couldn't really get with the whole thing

was always kinda hoping some director's cut would emerge that would redeem it but

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Friday, 13 April 2012 16:58 (fourteen years ago)

Just wanted to keep the nominations list light.

jungleous butterflies strange birds (Eric H.), Friday, 13 April 2012 16:58 (fourteen years ago)

Also, would totally vote "The Hitchhiker" before I'd ever consider voting for Creepshow 2.

jungleous butterflies strange birds (Eric H.), Friday, 13 April 2012 16:59 (fourteen years ago)

Jacob's Ladder is my favorite of the Dead Culkin Trilogy.

DRANGUS (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 13 April 2012 17:00 (fourteen years ago)

Jacob's Ladder will probably be on my list somewhere. Great movie. Plus genuine freak-out moments throughout.

SPOILER ALERT the second half of Jacobs Ladder>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>the last two seasons of Lost. The latter is pretty derivative of the former. As far as I can be on board with the whole, "all this shit was about prepping you for heaven" stuff, Jacobs Ladder executed it competently where Lost went pffffft.

HE HATES THESE CANS (Austerity Ponies), Friday, 13 April 2012 17:06 (fourteen years ago)

Also, would totally vote "The Hitchhiker" before I'd ever consider voting for Creepshow 2.

totally! imo TH is the best short from either Creepshow. The Raft has its merits, but the characters are so cliche '80s college student' that it hasn't aged very well.

Just wanted to keep the nominations list light.

― jungleous butterflies strange birds (Eric H.), Friday, April 13, 2012 12:58 PM (7 minutes ago)

if this is in re: bishop of battle, it's making the list longer. you've got both the bishop of battle and the film it's from, nightmares (1983), on the list.

and I guess now is the time to ask about classic monster movies - I know this is a can of worms, but the nom list is missing things like king kong and godzilla (though we have included them!).

leaving monster movies off seems weird (where else are you going to vote for king kong? sci-fi poll?), but leaving them on seems a little weird too, considering they will have to compete with the likes of suspiria and texas chainsaw massacre.

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Friday, 13 April 2012 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

I would nominate the Godzilla-esque Cthulu movie which probably only exists in my head but which has no good reason to not exist.

DRANGUS (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 13 April 2012 17:13 (fourteen years ago)

Ah, I see what you mean. I'll take it off.

jungleous butterflies strange birds (Eric H.), Friday, 13 April 2012 17:14 (fourteen years ago)

I remember there being some weird plotholes in Jacob's Ladder that annoyed me but it's been at least 15 years since I've seen it

Jilly Boel and the Eltones (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 13 April 2012 17:14 (fourteen years ago)

I must've missed it if anyone actually nominated Godzilla and King Kong.

My hunch is that they're probably as valid for inclusion as Jaws, but I dunno.

jungleous butterflies strange birds (Eric H.), Friday, 13 April 2012 17:15 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, I kind of feel like they're applicable, but that I wouldn't vote for them. For what it's worth, imdb classifies them as 'Drama, Horror, Sci-Fi' and 'Adventure, Fantasy, Horror' respectively.

emil.y, Friday, 13 April 2012 17:34 (fourteen years ago)

was kind of stunned to see Joe Dante's #2 horror film is The Devil and Daniel Webster.

Jacob's Ladder is bad.

World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Friday, 13 April 2012 17:41 (fourteen years ago)

You know it. You know.

DRANGUS (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 13 April 2012 17:55 (fourteen years ago)

I will shred my Jacob's Ladder DVD tonight and burn my eyes in shame.

People aren't for comparing, they are for loving. (Je55e), Friday, 13 April 2012 18:08 (fourteen years ago)

are any of Showtimes Masters of Horror series gonna make anyone's ballots?

Jilly Boel and the Eltones (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 13 April 2012 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

imprint would be the only thing with a chance in my book, not sure if I'd include it in a top 50 ballot tho

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Friday, 13 April 2012 18:16 (fourteen years ago)

I just found out about this series, haven't seen them yet. Kinda awesome that one is an adaptation of my favorite Berni Wrightson comic

Jilly Boel and the Eltones (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 13 April 2012 18:18 (fourteen years ago)

a lot of them are up on youtube... including imprint. it's not for the squeamish but the last half is totally batshit.

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Friday, 13 April 2012 18:20 (fourteen years ago)

Was waiting for someone to bring the MoH's up. Of what I've seen, only Cigarette Burns and Pro-Life would even be in the running for me.

jungleous butterflies strange birds (Eric H.), Friday, 13 April 2012 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

Had a "lol election year 2004" reaction to Homecoming when I finally got around to seeing it. Thought it was pretty meh compared to the raves it got.

jungleous butterflies strange birds (Eric H.), Friday, 13 April 2012 18:23 (fourteen years ago)

among Adrian Lyne shit, Fatal Attraction works way better than Jacob's Ladder, caveman kill-the-bitch politics or no.

and if it's big-screen Twilight Zones your after, there's M Night Shyamalan's good movie.

World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Friday, 13 April 2012 18:26 (fourteen years ago)

Only moh I even like is the fair-haired child, and only because the monster is triple a creepy

Rango Unchained (jjjusten), Friday, 13 April 2012 18:46 (fourteen years ago)

The Don Coscarelli one wasn't bad. THe one with the girl driving through the mountains?

i love the large auns pictures! (Phil D.), Friday, 13 April 2012 18:48 (fourteen years ago)

I watched that on netflix the other day. Not sure I ever need a rape scene in my movies tbh, but other than that it was alright. The more Angus Scrimm, the better, I say.

beachville, Friday, 13 April 2012 18:59 (fourteen years ago)

should prolly indicate which incubus is nommed, 1966, 1981, or 2006

(1966 I'm assuming)

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Friday, 13 April 2012 21:02 (fourteen years ago)

it was me, yes 1966.

tales from endoscopic oceans (Jon Lewis), Friday, 13 April 2012 21:03 (fourteen years ago)

Dead of Night (1974) - aka "Deathdream", "Whispers"
Deranged: Confessions of a Necrophile (1974) - aka "Deranged"

two weird and creepy horror films from the mid 70s. both written by alan ormsby and featuring some of tom savini's earliest gore effects work. dead of night is a vietnam-themed variation on "the monkey's paw", while deranged is a fairly closely based on the life and crimes of ed gein. i especially like the latter, which teeters on the borderline between black comedy and extremely grim horror like few others films i can think of.

BEMORE SUPER FABBY (contenderizer), Friday, 13 April 2012 21:32 (fourteen years ago)

I don't. (Draw the line on horror at Dead Ringers.) It may not be a true to type genre effort (Cronenberg's films rarely are) but the final act is macabre as fuck!

Will give this some thought before submitting my ballot. If I can talk myself into agreeing, it'll definitely be on there.

clemenza, Friday, 13 April 2012 21:46 (fourteen years ago)

i'd be more likely to include dead ringers that a lot of other not-quite-horror thrillers & dramas. mostly for the atmosphere, constant suspense and general creepiness.

BEMORE SUPER FABBY (contenderizer), Friday, 13 April 2012 21:59 (fourteen years ago)

Dead Ringers isn't even in my top 10 list of Cronenberg films

Jilly Boel and the Eltones (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 13 April 2012 22:00 (fourteen years ago)

so 2 more dumb questions: when are the ballots due, and to whom should they be emailed?!?

kurwa mać (Polish for "long life") (Eisbaer), Friday, 13 April 2012 22:17 (fourteen years ago)

voting hasn't opened yet. eric's extended nominations through the weekend (i think) and (i think) he said that he'd start the voting thread on monday. assume it will contain instructions whenever it does appear.

BEMORE SUPER FABBY (contenderizer), Saturday, 14 April 2012 06:26 (fourteen years ago)

Yep. Letting everyone take the chance to see Cabin in the Woods this weekend before opening voting period.

jungleous butterflies strange birds (Eric H.), Saturday, 14 April 2012 14:59 (fourteen years ago)

I've got a provisional list of 27 or 28. I have realized that, as I struggle to finish watching Martin--I started last weekend, and have interrupted it with three other films--this ship has sailed for me, and I'm going to mostly vote for things I liked 30 years ago. I can't stand gore anymore, and that's just too central to much of the genre going forward from the late '60s.

clemenza, Saturday, 14 April 2012 15:07 (fourteen years ago)

I for one have no problem with you voting for older gore-less films if that's what you like in the genre. I do think you're doing a disservice to a number of later films that bypass the gore, but at the same time, it's fairly indisputable that horror films have become more explicit as a rule.

emil.y, Saturday, 14 April 2012 15:21 (fourteen years ago)

You're right--I'm sure I've missed some stuff the past couple of decades I'd like. The older films I'll be voting for won't be entirely goreless, although by today's standards, Night of the Living Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre are pretty mild (though not in terms of psychological intensity, I'd argue).

clemenza, Saturday, 14 April 2012 15:30 (fourteen years ago)

Tourneur, Whale ftw

World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 14 April 2012 16:06 (fourteen years ago)

I will be thrilled to see Tourneur alongside Inside alongside Dreyer alongside The Brood.

jungleous butterflies strange birds (Eric H.), Saturday, 14 April 2012 16:08 (fourteen years ago)

I'm gonna exercise some futility here and nominate Hopital Brut despite its obscurity and the fact that the few people who've actually seen it probably wouldn't label it a horror film.

DRANGUS (Deric W. Haircare), Saturday, 14 April 2012 16:17 (fourteen years ago)

Is that the crazy French animation by Le Dernier Cri collective?

0O0O0O0O0 (Matt #2), Saturday, 14 April 2012 16:26 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, that's the one.

DRANGUS (Deric W. Haircare), Saturday, 14 April 2012 16:27 (fourteen years ago)

I took part in a live soundtracking of it once, I remember nothing of the film as I was too busy trying to work out what to play.

Anyway, if we can have Apaches as a nomination then we can have The Finishing Line too :
