so my bf and i are seeing a couple's counselor. don't worry; no crisis. we're coming up on 5 years together and this is kind of just a kick-the-tires, check-the-oil sort of tune-up.
anyway, our therapist is a v v dapper older man, probably gay, and funny as hell. it's actually pretty great! AND mostly covered by my boyfriend's health plan.
i'm feeling like a lucky man.

I've always wondered why Judy was a gay icon and that story sort of answered that question (I previously thought that it was just the pills and booze) and I sort of get it, but the her music says nothing to me about my life, I guess. Or actually IDK if it does b/c like Brodie, I only really know Somewhere Over the Rainbow and "that song about the train."

LAST Saturday I invited my friend Brodie, a 30ish gay man like myself, to a preview performance of “End of the Rainbow”
lol '30ish'

i read the article this morning and for a sec i thought you were talking 'brodie' who used to post here

I bleeve the Judy trolley has come and gone
however, p sure I've never heard Adele
― World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 20:38 (twelve years ago) link
i've liked her in the things i've seen her (i adore 'meet me in st. louis' in general) in but i haven't dug deep enough for her to have any particular resonance with me
― y'tulip, y'pea-brained earwig (donna rouge), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 20:38 (twelve years ago) link
hmmm some joke here about Adele and Judy both rolling in the deep.... xp

I like her fine as an actress and "personality" but dunno why gays love her. Well, I do.

Not that I’m Judyism’s last adherent by a long shot. I remind Brodie of this and ask whether he even believes it’s important to preserve our cultural traditions.
gtfo of here with this, ugh

i lost count of how many times he compares gays to jews in that article
― i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 20:47 (twelve years ago) link
it's a LOT though
yeah "judyism" is...if people actually say that that's weird

I weep for my people.I’m only half-kidding. I have this theory that because of the holocaust that was the AIDS epidemic and its annihilation of the previous generation of gay men, the faith of our fathers risks extinction. Today, Judyism, like Yiddish, is little more than a vague cultural memory.

well, aside from tourists they're the only ppl who go to Broadway musicals.

seriously, the last 6 months of Garland's life w/ her puking mid-song? I'd rather wait for The Nutty Professor musical.

p.s. i love joni mitchell more than anything else but lmao if you think she sings about 'real life'
― i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 21:03 (twelve years ago) link
or maybe idk what 'real life' is supposed to mean in this context
think she sings a lot about "invented life" yeah

i'm guessing the context he means is "acoustic guitars"
but I've seen them pave paradise.

can't believe people lived through the eigties and nineties still thinking guitars signify realness
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 21:14 (twelve years ago) link
I did. Now I realize music doesn't particularly signify realness.

barely know anything or care about judy garland but given that i love mariah, feel like i can't exactly criticise older gays for loving an older stereotypically gay favourite
in other news i worked in an office last week until today and i don't know how anyone does it. four days of it and i feel like i have ME and might be a bit ill.

what makes Mariah a gay favorite other than her hysteria and EMOTIONS?

i've no idea what makes most gay favourites in any field gay favourites. never worked it out.

When I explain why I love Madonna it's often for some of the reasons lots of straight ones do, so I don't understand the special frisson.

Never thought about it that way, but that might explain why Cher and Judy are two icons that never really did too much for me.
― get me bloodied (Eric H.), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 17:17 (twelve years ago) link
never really into her 'gay icon' aspect cuz, uh, she wasn't resilient, she was a mess.
Vaginal 'Creme' Davis, now THERE's a gay icon.
