I've turned onto up the wrong side of a divided 4-lane highway due to inadequate signage + fog. That was scary but funny. No alcohol involved since that was before I drank. It was late and there was no traffic, so I kept driving the wrong way until I came to a break in the median.

Me, too, although I tend to take a "there but for the grace of Gob go I" view of my survival. In retrospect, I could have once or twice been this person. I just got lucky. :(

Should say I haven't driven under the influence since the 90s.

So I was starting to get a little disappointed in the first issue of The Chicagoan, but the super huge oral history of Siskel & Ebert is making up for all the shortcomings.* Its a real joy to read and I'm learning quite a bit about them, more than I'd ever really cared about before.

* - The shortcomings are pretty big, imho, although I have high hopes for the future. It looks great and there are some great photos (partic the ones from those insane building climbers), but a lot of the interviews and pieces in the first half are super fluffy and lightweight (the Jeanne Gang one being a decent exception). I guess I hoped for a few more in-depth pieces. The biggest disappointment of all, though, was the Martin Prieb piece. I really enjoyed his book and had high hopes for something new from him, but it was really weird. First it started off with a weirdly racist tone that I never detected in his book, then it got weirder. He mentioned being so drawn to this case from forty years ago and how it paralled his own life, but he never really explained how or why. Instead he just spent a couple pages theorizing on what happened based on the reports and articles he read. Which is a fair approach, but the paragraphs he spent agonizing over what order the perp raped his victims was really uncomfortable and pretty wtf.

i just did something i have never done -- i commented on wbez's facebook posting. i couldn't help myself! they posted a list of "space jams" that is...pretty feeble in terms of space jams, so i suggested some more appropriately spaced out space jams. i figure if i can't keep my mouth shut, the least i can do is recommend something better instead of being pissy and negative (which i sort of was when i saw rhcp on their list of SPACE JAMS)

i mean, i realize that they're on the radio and all, and that real spaced out space jams are super long, but honestly. this is the internet, you can post a link to a 17 min song just as easily as you can one that is 3 minutes.

also yes, dan m i TOTALLY agree with you -- it's suddenly like the red eye. they had an in-depth story the other day about standing in line to get into a restaurant. they used to talk about juveniles trapped in the criminal justice system and actual local issues. blech.

i guess actual reporting costs money. that's sad if that's the reason why it got all floofy without much warning.

As to the space jams, maybe this is super-duper obvious (and if so, I apologize), but I think the songs they posted were pop songs that were about outer space, rather than like trancey spaced-out mood music.

I thought about going to see that Colin Stetson show, too -- if you guys are going, then I definitely will.

June 23, btw, will be the 23rd anniversary of the release of the first Tim Burton Batman movie. My family went to see the Cubs play the Expos that day and sat in the bleachers behind Andre Dawson.

gonna finally check out native foods, the new veggie restaurant in the loop, for lunch today if anyone cares to join me. if not i'll just read.

native foods review: ordering process was kind of annoying - they wanted to explain vegan foods to me, then i had to give my email for a loyalty card, then they kind of tricked me into ordering extra food (asked if i wanted fries, i assumed it was a free side with my entree but it was actually extra) - but the food was good. i had a "bacon cheeseburger" that was more of a seitan sandwich and sweet potato fries. i am stuffed.

i'll have to try that place sometime, but i'll be wary when ordering. did you have to get the loyalty card?

i probably could have refused but she took my email down wrong anyways so i'm not going to be getting any spam from them

also: kinda pricy (about $15 for the sandwich and fries and tip, plus a free iced tea for being a first-time customer) but you get a good amount of food. i probably should have taken some of it home with me because i'm stuffed now.
