yeah hour of the wolf is quality stuff but I've had a couple horror fans recoil in horror after I've recommended it

B-b-but the arty side *provides* the creepy factor. Gore is great, but it's not the only thing to look for.

see I don't think of carpenter as a particularly gory director, he's great at suspense tho

by arty stuff i mean long, direct-to-the-camera monologues, personally I don't find that v creepy but it doesn't take me out of the movie either

xxxxxpost - if anything I think atmospheric/creepy/'wrong'/occultic/nightmarish horror is infinitely superior to gore/splatter/jumpscare thriller stuff. the latter is really a pretty cheap and unimaginative way to get scares (admittedly I like a lot of Grindhouse stuff but more for the style and atmosphere or laughs usually).

the Winkies scene in Mulholland Drive, or the creeping paranoia of Rosemary's Baby, Wicker Man, or Jacob's Ladder will always be much more effective imo

When I was a lass, I almost exclusively read (mostly) terrible horror paperbacks (and Circus magazine) and I think I've read The Beast Within at least three times. Then the movie hit heavy rotation on cable and I watched it pretty much every time it came on.
