instagram's "value" such as it is is in the social network aspect, not the filter aspect

naw its a rapidly growing social network w/50m users whos main utility photo sharing is also facebooks main utility - idk abt the price but its obvs why facebook felt they needed to eat them

really its "buying" 30 million users + ownership of the most popular photo-sharing social network. facebook loves photos b/c theyre significantly more interesting than links or status updates, as measured by the # of ppl who click on them and the amount of time they spned

number of instagram users should be getting a big bump up now that they have it for android too, the fact that they have as many users as they do and it was iphone only until last week is kinda crazy

they paid $1 per photograph too

its hilarious b/c its so overvalued, but also because like "one billion" is such a funny number

~1million new instagram users is the first 24 hours of andriod

and only $55 million per filter

so really this is just fb being really, really, really risk averse w/r/t competition

hipstamatic could integrate a lot of products (books, prints, postcards) relatively easily. God knows if they'd actually make any money off of them, though.

instagram is also a big image service for twitter users so its a way for facebook to get some inroads to twitter

no this is definitely talked about in the financial press, with the same kind of hedgy language that you probably see before any bubble burts, although tbf this actually isn't really as big a bubble in terms of sheer numbers of ridiculously valued companies.

the other guy who was trying to get me to collapps was using the "fart app" from a while ago (that got bought for like a milli) as his example over and over of what is possible, like it was the pinnacle of apps, or for some reason it was the perfect app to explain every part of his ideas w/

people talk abt this all the time at least in the tech media, maybe its not as much of a mainstream story because most of these companies are still privately held where the 1st tech bubble was all in the stock market

hearing people who just want to develop shit for money talk irl scares the fuck out of me

I don't know if you can call this a bubble, there is srs, srs money in having detailed personal information on every single human in america, but there will be a limited number of winners

I always feel like I should ask them if they've ever asked themselves why they're alive but then again I post on the internet so who g'saf

I wanted to design a bar bingo app that could be tailored to fit whatever kind of bar you're at

a) I don't know how to program
b) I figured it would have to be social with leaderboards and Foursquare type coupons from bars and shit, but I don't know to do it
c) there are probably already 40 of these

well the first internet bubble had the same qualities -- legit value underneath some of it, limited number of winners.

when I've received something like that it was from an account that posts about local people, and from what I can tell they were trying to get paid to promote me

my experience of this website has basically turned into "recommendations" for a bunch of accounts with names like film.gobbler who recycle the same eleven movie clips that always seem to be in my feed. i don't want to watch movie clips. this is why i only check about every other week now. mostly just following local music venues to see what's coming

yeah, I pretty much swap to the "following" feed and scroll new stuff until I hit the end and close it

most of the good stuff is local people/venues posting about events, and a handful of local restaurants that put their daily specials up

wish i could figure out how to do that in a browser. i refuse to put this shit on my phone

I bought a drawing from Tony Millionaire and we’ve been communicating through Instagram. As soon as I get that drawing i’m quitting all the Meta stuff. My wife keeps sending me Instagram reels and I don’t watch them. Grossed out by all things Meta. I can feel instagram trying to get into my head and it can fuck off.

FYI - when you post an Instagram link that has the "?igsh=" query string at the end, the first thing that shows up on the page is a popup saying "(user) shared this with you." Something to be mindful of if you want to keep your & your friends' Instagram accounts private. </sic>

i thought Instagram was famous for its square pictures, but i logged in again yesterday and got a grid that was three portrait pictures across, all cropped badly

square as default was done away with like five years ago

and yet they still can't handle the exotic 4x6 ratio, for some ungodly reason

shows how much i use it.

my home feed seems to be mostly strangers posting video+. i think i have like 2 people i follow posting regularly, the rest having done what I've done - create a basic account with 4 pictures in it in order to lurk

+mostly farage, accidents, sport, things i have no interest in.

From square-only (before my time of using it), Instagram has gradually improved flexibility on aspect ratio of photos. For a time you couldn't mix portrait and landscape in a post containing multiple photos, but now you can. But there are still issues and bugs. After posting something, I have to go to 'Adjust preview' to get all the photos to display in the correct aspect ratio, despite having already selected 'Mixed' at the time of posting. Also, when clicking through to a photo via the link in a notification of a like, the wrong aspect ratio is still shown.

also, a lot of that is only implemented in the mobile app. really hate this thing where desktop interfaces are just completely left to rot.
