On my iPhone so I can't check atm but has Singapore sling been nommed? Not even sure if I think it's horror qua horror, but if eraserhead is allowed this deserves some contemplation as well.

it hasn't been nominated. i thought about it a couple days back, but decided it wasn't a horror film.

certainly less scary than eraserhead. then again, has more traditional horror/thriller trappings than eraserhead, so...

Watched Paranormal Activity II yesterday. I liked the first one quite a bit, but thought II was too slow until it went totally bananas in the last 20-30 minutes, especially since the slow build up was p much the same as in the first one.

But then, bc it's been awhile since I saw the first one, I didn't pick up on the relationship between the two movies (lol memorable characters, I guess?). Once I realized that, I appreciated II a little more. Also I woke up at 3 am last night and lied in bed thinking about the end of the movie for awhile, which is not something I'd recommend.

Anyway, I wonder if I and II would work as one movie. I'm not sure, because I did like the slow reveal about the cause of the events in the first one. But there is a lot of zzzz buildup, which is kind of old hat by the second movie.

In conclusion, I like this franchise more than I thought I would and will definitely watch III. A fourth myth be pushing it, though.

i saw PA 2 in the theater without having seen the first until later. like both, probably 2 more than 1, but yeah the connections between them are more just a little added fun than a real strong narrative thread.

I don't really get the problem with Eraserhead on this poll. I mean, it's not genre-horror in any slavish sense, but it's TERRIFYING. I'd definitely class it as some kind of surreal psychological horror.

xp, the third one ties the narrative together a little more. On balance, i think it's probably marginally better than the second.

one of the most horrifying pre-60s films, saw it again about a year ago and could not believe how disturbing it was, also reminded me why I was so mad when I first heard it was being remade in the 80s, even if by cronenberg

I like both versions of The Fly, but I've only seen the original once, so Cronenberg's is more affixed in my brain. I think I actually prefer the remake of Body Snatchers, though. Speaking of which, do we have both of those on the list?

If you mean the first remake of Body Snatchers (never saw the next two), agree completely. The first is great in its way, the second is one of the best films of the '70s.

The 1933 Invisible Man doesn't seem to be on the list yet, I think it should be added.

The 1958 The Fly haunted me when I was a child-the ending was horrifying- but I don't think I've seen it since.

Loved 1958 version. Never saw the Cronenberg version. I should rectify that.

re: Lynch - Though none of these are 'genre films' obv, I think Eraserhead, Lost Highway, and Inland Empire are all quite frightening (in spots at least) & have more than enough elements of the macabre to qualify them for inclusion in this.

cronenberg fly was one of the first "adult" horror movies i saw as a grade schooler (along with shining, halloween, tcm, r's baby, etc) and it's probably not gonna make my list but probably should for the effect it had on me.

cosign. i think lynch (and cronenberg) should "loom somewhat inappropriately over the results the way the Coens did over the comedy poll." between lost highway, mulholland dr. and inland empire, i'd say that lynch become a straight-up horror filmmaker, if an unconventional one. certainly the most gifted maker of terrifying cinema currently working in america.

hey Lynch should definitely be in the list with at least a couple movies, no doubt. but if he has like 6 movies in the top 100, including some that are barely horror (Coens/comedy style), it'll be goofy, is all i'm saying.

I love lynch but there's no way that he deserves more than 1 film in a horror countdown

And that film should be The Elephant Man.

Watched Eaten Alive, which I did not like at all, despite it being right in my wheelhouse.

I totally get why many/most people don't like this movie (and I'm not an aficionado of much of this stuff, so grain of salt here) but Eaten Alive is one of the few horror movies I own. Seeing it last on the bill at a smalltown drive-in in '78 sort of defined the whole grindhouse aesthetic for me.

Vargtimmen now struck off my 'must watch before the poll ends' list. Oh my fucking god, that film is amazing. I'm going to try to keep the only recently viewed films lower than they might be after full digestion time, but I dunno, man, these last two have really impressed me.

yeah hour of the wolf is quality stuff but I've had a couple horror fans recoil in horror after I've recommended it

B-b-but the arty side *provides* the creepy factor. Gore is great, but it's not the only thing to look for.

see I don't think of carpenter as a particularly gory director, he's great at suspense tho

by arty stuff i mean long, direct-to-the-camera monologues, personally I don't find that v creepy but it doesn't take me out of the movie either
