overexposed?

he's on bbbm and...?

side-point: dermot and bblb have really gone off the boil.

Seriously, Try Punching This Guy in the Face and See What Happens (Enrique), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:32 (twenty years ago)

Dermot's wasted on BB, he's actually got some talent, isn't he bored shitless of it all by now?

Il mio nome e' Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:33 (twenty years ago)

Until now the word 'dandy' has not appeared in this thread.

Hotman Paris Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:34 (twenty years ago)

Fop has. Close enough, no?

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:41 (twenty years ago)

The first post mentions "dandified". Is that not enough?

I echo this post entirely: "I am torn between thinking he's very funny and thinking he's an irritating nob end. He's probably both. "

I basically don't like him, yet find myself laughing at him.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:42 (twenty years ago)

Brand will never be as good as he was when we was running around Homelands/Creamfields etc. going up to random punters with a mic in order to demonstrate that he was even more loved up than they were, on MTV's Dancefloor Chart.

He needs to become the new presenter of a revived Blankety Blank on BBC prime time.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:45 (twenty years ago)

Prime time is the death of comic talent (not that I think Russell Brand has much of that)

he should be ok then?

ailsa OTM.

DANDIES HAVWE TO BE WELL-DRESSED

BRAND LOOKS LIKE A TRAMP WITH A SCARF

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:53 (twenty years ago)

BOYS SHOULD SHAVE MORE

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:54 (twenty years ago)

I don't recommend R. Brand goes mainstream

Il mio nome e' Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:54 (twenty years ago)

AND SKINNY JEANS ARE WRONGWRONGWRONG AND WILL NEVER BE RIGHT

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:54 (twenty years ago)

they're right on hott gyals.

Seriously, Try Punching This Guy in the Face and See What Happens (Enrique), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:54 (twenty years ago)

Lex, you liked MINE. And Anna's.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:58 (twenty years ago)

But not if they're as skinny as Russell Brand (xpost)

Il mio nome e' Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:58 (twenty years ago)

skinny jeans on girls = always right; makes their legs look GREAT
skinny jeans on boys = always wrong; makes their legs look like TWIGS

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:59 (twenty years ago)

Lex has just made me laugh more than Russell Brand has, but in a different way.

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Friday, 16 June 2006 09:03 (twenty years ago)

I don't recommend R. Brand goes mainstream

oh me neither in all seriousness, i just thought it was a nice comical image.

IMPORTANT RIDER: LEGS NEED TO BE GOOD IN FIRST PLACE

Seriously, Try Punching This Guy in the Face and See What Happens (Enrique), Friday, 16 June 2006 09:06 (twenty years ago)

Lex resents the androgynous/effeminate aspect of men having skinny legs! Disgraceful!

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 16 June 2006 09:08 (twenty years ago)

The first post mentions "dandified". Is that not enough?

Note to self: Search for the stem word 'dand' in future.

Hotman Paris Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 16 June 2006 09:32 (twenty years ago)

I question the lex's right to comment on "style"

RJG (RJG), Friday, 16 June 2006 09:36 (twenty years ago)

He once wrote something in the Observer Music Monthly about how Carl Barat was his hero and had "saved England from the chavs and made it Blake's Albion" again - which I thought I'd never forgive...

However he is very, very good at hosting BB'sBM. Given how many times it's on a week I am impressed that he can keep coming up with new iterations of not just the ballbags/SWINE link, but also "So-and-so is perfectly happy to do such-and-such, but when I suggested it would be quite good to see Aisleyne and Grace wrestling in crude oil in the middle of a desert, they looked at me like I was no better than Gary Glitter...", and the one that goes "Get in touch with us the way the Daily Mail gets in touch with asylum seekers, except use a phone instead of creating a hysterical climate of fear and distrust"...

Flyboy (Flyboy), Friday, 16 June 2006 09:39 (twenty years ago)

... this is funny?

Il mio nome e' Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 June 2006 09:43 (twenty years ago)

it's the way he tells them.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 16 June 2006 09:44 (twenty years ago)

the ballbag thing is v unfunny and his schtick is v thin and samey and his "set pieces" for the phone message thing etc are also quite unfunny but he does say some funny things, sometimes, usually in conversation or when people are shouting

RJG (RJG), Friday, 16 June 2006 09:44 (twenty years ago)

RJG OTM re the lex

jed_ (jed), Friday, 16 June 2006 09:53 (twenty years ago)

i like the set pieces, often!

'... in the way the sun gets in touch with world cup supporters, only with a phone instead of advocating a fifa-inpired kristallnacht on all those who don't have a flag coming out of every orifice' (or something).

Seriously, Try Punching This Guy in the Face and See What Happens (Enrique), Friday, 16 June 2006 09:58 (twenty years ago)

yes, the "in the way ... only with ..." bits are usually quite funny, actually

RJG (RJG), Friday, 16 June 2006 10:05 (twenty years ago)

what i like most about him is that although he's very quick, especially in the audience opinion sections of the show, he's never snide towards the audience members. also he always tries to deflate any particularly vitriolic opinion in a surprisingly claming way. "oh you shouldn't think that, i like grace, she's nice".

jed_ (jed), Friday, 16 June 2006 10:16 (twenty years ago)

working Kristallnacht into the gags is always a winner.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 16 June 2006 10:19 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I'd ever noticed him between this summer and yet suddenly he appears to be EVERYWHERE. It's like he's dominating the summer, which is quite an achievement in World Cup year.

But yeah, he's a twunt.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 16 June 2006 10:20 (twenty years ago)

he's always making nazi references.

he SHOULD be a twunt but somehow isn't.

Seriously, Try Punching This Guy in the Face and See What Happens (Enrique), Friday, 16 June 2006 10:23 (twenty years ago)

Judging by those pics on the fansite, he is more of a PIRATE than a dandy.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Friday, 16 June 2006 10:23 (twenty years ago)

I liked when the Arctic Monkeys tried to slag him off for doing Grim Oop North gags at the NME awards. Whooshes all round.

He's funny and annoying in equal measures. I think I mostly like him.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 16 June 2006 10:24 (twenty years ago)

Sometimes there's a fine line between pirates and dandies.

theantmustdance (theantmustdance), Friday, 16 June 2006 10:24 (twenty years ago)

Il mio nome e' Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 June 2006 10:28 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, definite Jack Sparrow vibe to him.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Friday, 16 June 2006 13:29 (twenty years ago)

considering how rubbish most anchors are he's certainly a breath of less stale air.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 16 June 2006 13:46 (twenty years ago)

It's funny the way he puts his arm around people on BBBM, and sits on their knee! Sometimes he is staring right in their face and doing this, it's really weird and amusing.

Also that Derrida joke mentioned upthread was insane. Who else would be that quick.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 June 2006 17:42 (twenty years ago)

Dannii Minogue has accused Russell Brand of being a "vile predator".

The singer was left shocked after the MTV host flirted outrageously with her throughout an interview for his show 1 Leicester Square. Later, the presenter apparently chased Minogue down a corridor and demanded her phone number.

"He is completely crazy and a bit of a vile predator," Dannii told The Mirror. "I certainly don't think he has cured his sex addiction, that's for sure. He wouldn't take no for an answer."

She added, "I was told he got sacked from MTV before for wearing an Osama bin Laden costume to work the day after September 11. I couldn't believe that I'd just agreed to be interviewed by someone who would do that, it really unnerved me.

"And then throughout the interview he kept making shocking remarks that I can't even repeat. Just uttering the words would make me blush."

Multiple friends have texted me that they have had to stop listening to a podcast that details Brand's rise to cultural prominence because he was so awful they couldn't bear it. Of course I listened to both episodes and concluded that someone should have stopped this guy when he had mice in his hair. Unfortunately he persists.

(I mentioned it upthread)

Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Saturday, 25 April 2026 13:52 (two months ago)

but he was a successful comedian for years, he's good at making people laugh.

ILX has been anti-stand-up comedy for years. This won't get much of a hearing here, even before you factor in all of the other horrors.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 25 April 2026 22:26 (two months ago)

You don't really have to be anti-stand up comedy to not accept that success equals quality either. Stereophonics were good at making people enjoy their music too, doesn't mean I'm anti music if I think they're shite.

As far as music goes, Poptimism might complicate this a little bit.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 26 April 2026 07:35 (two months ago)

Prefer the music of the Stereophonics to the comedy of Russell Brand tbf.

Eh not really, none of the poptimist critics had a blanket "if it sells a lot that must mean it's good" stance.

a ZX spectrum is haunting Europe (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 26 April 2026 12:51 (two months ago)

Piers Morgan asked Russell Brand which passages were relevant to him when he brought a Bible into court. pic.twitter.com/8eI3VCKJIM

As seen in IG comments - “I’d have to say…The Best of the Bible”.

omar little, Sunday, 26 April 2026 14:01 (two months ago)

xp think it's more in the sense of: as it's sold a lot in the first place, then that's where you ought to start and take it seriously.

Whereas ILX pretty much just finds stand ups a wasteland no matter how good or popular it is, despite that it's very popular.
