I just IMDBd Finkelman and found out he directed Grease 2.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Only in Canada would somebody whose body of work consists of the screenplays to Police Academy sequels be granted auteur status.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

xpost

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

I could have sworn he had Police Academy sequel credits. Maybe he's paid someone to have them removed from his IMDB entry??? Yet kept Grease 2 and Who's That Girl?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

OMG Bones Brigade cameos in PA IV: Citizens On Patrol!!!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I thought I'd mentioned it before too. Oh well. It is still a favourite TV moment of mine.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

the whole jon stewart/hank kingsley plotline was so great, as kingsley got more and more desperate. wonderful stuff.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

did you know that the episode where tom snyder is maybe going to do a show following larry's was the reason snyder ended up doing the late late show after letterman?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

So classic!

my favorite is probably the episode where hank and his ex-wife's home sex tape circulates around hollywood, and hank prays to god for it not to affect his orange juice industry spokesmanship:

"As you know, sex is a consensual act between two or more adults."

i love the david duchovny episode as well.

latebloomer: lazy r people (latebloomer), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

yes, the sex tape episode is the best. this is my favorite television show of all time. the self-loathing is so spot on. nobody's captured the personality of TV writers better. honestly, I know about a dozen people exactly like Wallace.

bonus points for when they hired Sarah Silverman. She was hot back then. Hank's assistant was priceless.

Brit-types. They're repeating the whole of Larry Saunders on the icy wasteland that is ITV4 at the moment. Enjoy.

winterland, Tuesday, 6 December 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

this news inspired my revive.

larry sanders is followed by dream on!

it's on itv4 again, at about 1.30am.

That one guy that quit, Sunday, 1 April 2007 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

and it looks like there will be more dvds.

That one guy that quit, Sunday, 1 April 2007 10:47 (nineteen years ago)

i have the new set. it's sadly only a "best of," doesn't look like they're going to do all the seasons (despite the fact that every bullshit tv show ever is being faithfully released season-by-season on dvd these days).

HOWEVER, that said, it is an amazing set. tons of new material--"personal visits" with cast members and guests on the show, lots of funny bonus stuff and the whole thing was obviously put together with a ton of love.

s1ocki, Sunday, 1 April 2007 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

amazon says there's a "not just the best of" AND a compleat S01 out on 17 april:

That one guy that quit, Sunday, 1 April 2007 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

s01 came out a few years ago in the us and it sold really poorly (it was sort of before the whole tv-on-dvd boom) and thus the following seasons never made it. the "not just the best of" is what i was talking about.

s1ocki, Sunday, 1 April 2007 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

I don't really understand what is on that Not Just The Best Of... but I'm very glad to see WKRP in Cincinnati is coming out on dvd very soon.

Ned Trifle II, Sunday, 1 April 2007 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

it's 18 episodes from the span of the series and a ton of docs and "visits" and deleted scenes and commentaries and stuff.

ghost rider, Monday, 16 April 2007 05:10 (nineteen years ago)

In regard to the DVDs I read somewhere awhile ago that since the first season didn't really sell very well HBO decided not to release any more seasons.

I heard from a source close to the creators that the additional-seasons-on-DVD obstacle was actually the result of the massive legal wrangling that required clearing the musical guests' performances throughout the series.

Surprisingly, perhaps, it's almost impossible for a release from a major studio distributor to 'sell poorly' in this day and age of Best Buys/Wal Marts/Stores that auto-order a standard amount of any given title based on corporate research and a title's "category" of release (i.e. they establish early on if something is a "B," which would mean 22 copies per store, versus a "C," which is 5 copies per store, or whatever). They've massaged this supply and demand thing to incredible precision to the point where the studios are not losing money on any release.

Ben Boyerrr, Monday, 16 April 2007 10:31 (nineteen years ago)

(I also have to point out yet again that Morbius' Ye gods, Arrested Development made even Tambor unfunny. is still one of the single most insane opinions I have ever heard voiced, on any topic).

OTM. tambor was The Balls in hill street blues, too

stevie, Monday, 16 April 2007 10:35 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah well, AD's cult love is proof that we have a whole generation used to unfunny comedy.

Last week, Shandling great when Letterman said "You're a guy who wants a family someday..." GS: "Don't you think I better start in the next 6 hours?"

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 26 April 2007 13:39 (nineteen years ago)

this show kicked ass, do they still air it? some channel used to not terribly long ago

deeznuts, Thursday, 26 April 2007 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

Bravo (they probably cut it)

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 26 April 2007 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

oh christ if youve watched any bravo lately youd know theres no probably about it

deeznuts, Thursday, 26 April 2007 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

the box seems really good. the extras are *exhaustive... but these are out-takes and deleted scenes i actually want to watch. the documentary is good stuff. the buddhism thing at the end of the dvd is a little weird. the interviews with tambor are hilarious, with rip torn really moving, with shandling often unsettling.

i want an artie in my life.

W i l l, Thursday, 26 April 2007 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

Morbz totally OTM re: Arrested Development.

I didn't see enough of LS when this was on. Seen a few reruns that were chuckleworthy but in general feel like I missed the boat. I would be VERY interested in seeing The Garry Shandling Show again tho. Just to see if its actually as funny as I remember it.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 26 April 2007 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

theres a few garry shandling show clips on youtube. i think it's aged pretty well and i wish there were dvds available

am0n, Thursday, 26 April 2007 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

has anyone watched the alec baldwin section of the DVDs yet? he and garry spar in what seems to be garry's personal gym. things start off cordial (since, as garry states beforehand, they don't really know each other) and then turn pretty awkward. they both seem to get pretty into the boxing/challenging each other's manhood and sort of veer away from the show. baldwin even mentions getting agression out due to his divorce problems.

on the whole, though, i'm totally satisfied with the DVD package. sure, it sucks that they're not releasing the seasons (though, GS keeps claiming in interviews that sony will be releasing more) but the follow ups are totally killer as far as i'm concerned.

Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe, Friday, 27 April 2007 01:35 (nineteen years ago)

i think, if this set is successful, they may release further seasons. i hope. they are quite easy to torrent tho, if they *never come out.

stevie, Friday, 27 April 2007 07:59 (nineteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure there won't be anymore til Shandling's dead.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 27 April 2007 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

why did you google that? were you looking for thank-you sites?

s1ocki, Friday, 25 May 2007 06:15 (nineteen years ago)

more like momentary curiousity about how many others have felt the need to express their gratitude in words.

W i l l, Friday, 25 May 2007 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

this really is one of the greatest shows ever

latebloomer, Monday, 4 August 2008 09:40 (seventeen years ago)

agreed. wish there was a second box set coming out...

stevie, Monday, 4 August 2008 09:40 (seventeen years ago)

how can all the seasons be available for torrent if they never came out as DVDs? surely they haven't been recorded to VHS when initially on and then digitised recently?

S-, Monday, 4 August 2008 13:09 (seventeen years ago)

I watched the entire run of the show last year, thanks to someone seemingly having done just that. Great stuff, though I probably watched it too quickly, so it became a bit of a daze or haze or mayonnaise after a while

Anyways, I guess they might have ripped them from re-runs rather than crusty old tapes. I no longer recall what the image/sound quality was like. I've definitely found rips of other old shows that very obviously were taken from aged cassettes though.

Øystein, Monday, 4 August 2008 13:17 (seventeen years ago)

how do you do this bit t0rrent thingy again?

the torrented eps were from UK's itv4, iirc, which repeated the show last year, iirc. however, i rarelty rc.

they were up on youtube too.

(And one that celebrities hoping to get booked again are quick to kiss up to. Because it's partly an exposé of people with a pathological need for attention.)

Marty J. Bilge (Old Lunch), Thursday, 5 August 2021 23:53 (four years ago)

I'm actually in my first watch of this show though I'm spacing out the seasons a bit (finished S2 so far). It doesn't have as many laughs as I was expecting but I'm enjoying it

I've gone back and forth on whether Larry's a good host or not. He's a bit low energy but he can be pretty funny with guests. The monologues are where he really flounders imo

Vinnie, Friday, 6 August 2021 00:19 (four years ago)

The best recurring joke on Flight of the Conchords was how much they sucked whenever shown actually playing live in front of other people.

pplains, Friday, 6 August 2021 00:46 (four years ago)

the show-within-the-show is always losing in the ratings to leno and letterman

symsymsym, Friday, 6 August 2021 01:32 (four years ago)

The actual show we're watching is otherwise brilliant enough that I've long assumed that the in-universe show is intended to kind of suck and that Larry Sanders is intended to be a pretty mediocre talent.

― Marty J. Bilge (Old Lunch)

I've always thought he was supposed to be just good enough to keep the job on the network he was on, but not good enough to move up to a more prestigious spot. And he kind of knew it.

I just finished watching the whole series for the first time starting about 6 months ago and finishing a couple weeks ago. Really great job of sustaining the humor and interest, and I'd say ended just at the right time.

nickn, Friday, 6 August 2021 02:30 (four years ago)

And by "always thought" I mean in the past several months I've been watching.

btw, anyone know where I can find Bojack Horseman post season 3? (besides subscribing to Netflix, of course).

nickn, Friday, 6 August 2021 02:32 (four years ago)

where can I find a netflix-made-and-exclusive show without looking at Netflix or stealing it, you mean??

Larry is absolutely meant to suck shit as an interviewer (1st) and host (2nd), the bar just hadn’t been lowered to Fallon and Corden irl yet (or until 25 years later)

bobo honkin' slobo babe (sic), Friday, 6 August 2021 05:52 (four years ago)

Yes. They had the first 3 seasons on Adult Swim, which my cable has. Was hoping it might be hosted elsewhere now that it's fairly old.

nickn, Friday, 6 August 2021 06:14 (four years ago)

Also: the first two seasons of Bojack where released on DVD/Blu (with extras) a couple years ago by Shout Factory with no news since about any subsequent releases.

“Heroin” (ft. Bobby Gillespie) (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 6 August 2021 10:41 (four years ago)

We picked back up with Season 2 after a lengthy pause. "Larry's Agent" and "Hankerciser 200" seem top tier so far.

four months pass...

plumped for the box set. So good. Just finished it all, didn't realise he was in an irl relationship with Darlene at the time.

Rip Torn will always be my favourite character from this, the episode where he gets drunk after the show with the janitor is great.

Ste, Wednesday, 12 January 2022 15:28 (four years ago)

I missed this when it came out last fall, but Jon Stewart talked about a Hitler sketch that was vetoed by a Paramount exec. This was on Stewart's ill-fated talk show, and it was indeed the inspiration for the Adolph Hankler episode of Larry Sanders (which Stewart apparently wrote).

birdistheword, Wednesday, 12 March 2025 13:13 (one year ago)

(it's around the 8:00 mark, but it's worth hearing Conan's setup for context if you want to hear how both of them got a better perspective of how they were going to succeed)
