Stupid question: where can one get a decent haircut in Philly? I'm, um, a number of months overdue for one and kind of unsure what to do after years of terrible Supercuts in New Jersey.
― muus lääv? :D muus dut :( (Telephone thing), Saturday, 7 April 2012 02:03 (fourteen years ago)
I used to get cheap ones from students at Jean Madeline at like 4th and Bainbridge but now I go to my friend who works at Sulimay's Barber Shop on E Girard; excellent cuts for only $10

rest in peace, samantha. you were always so sweet and one of the first people I knew in Philly when I moved there in the 80's. You made an awesome thing and so many people loved you. bless.

You guys still haven't had a FAP? I'm here until tuesday and I offer my services in helping to make this happen.

― Mordy, Sunday, 10 June 2012 18:05 (fourteen years ago)
off-topic, we ate here last week: http://www.vedgerestaurant.com/ - fancy artsy vegan food (from the guy who used to run Horizons way back in the day). pretty delish tbh.
― Mordy, Sunday, 10 June 2012 18:12 (fourteen years ago)
I have heard nothing but stellar praise for Vedge from vegans and omnis alike.

I went to the Mutter Museum, this brasserie off Rittenhouse Square called Parc, and Franklin bar, where there was a large contingent of people in sailor garb with the added innovation of suspenders. It's so fun here!
― Virginia Plain, Monday, 11 June 2012 04:04 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah, those were Mennonites boozing it up
How was Parc? That place is always packed
― dell (del), Monday, 11 June 2012 04:18 (fourteen years ago)
It was good! I wouldn't have necessarily picked it, but my sister made the reservations. Tonight she wants us to go to a Peruvian-Cantonese restaurant?
We just negotiated my mom out of a bus tour of Philly in favor of a trolley to the liberty bell. If I remember correctly, there are cute stores in the historic area (are those just along Chestnut . . . or)?
― Virginia Plain, Monday, 11 June 2012 14:50 (fourteen years ago)
Nice work, heh. Yeah, if you walk along 2nd and 3rd just north of Market there are shops, galleries, etc. It's a nice area to walk around in... plus there is a coffeeshop that legendary radio personality Jerry Blavat ("The Geator") frequents. Alas, Danny Bonaduce left the neighborhood last year, but you can probably still drink in his spirit. Eww.
Chifa, hmmm, haven't encountered any feedback on that place. Sounds interesting tho. Cool, I've always been curious about that brasserie jawn
― dell (del), Monday, 11 June 2012 15:02 (fourteen years ago)
Funny, you don't strike me as a brasserie kind of guy.
― Virginia Plain, Monday, 11 June 2012 15:39 (fourteen years ago)
I don't strike me as being that kind of guy either, which may partly explain why I've never been there. I imagine that it's exactly like a cross between Arby's and Dunkin Donuts, except with outdoor seating, topless servers and maybe better coffee
― dell (del), Monday, 11 June 2012 16:15 (fourteen years ago)
Ha, we got rookered onto a double-decker city bus tour. :(

― Delbert Botts, D.D.S. (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 11 June 2012 19:33 (fourteen years ago)
Our tour guide said that Ray's is the best place for ice coffee. True?
Just saw the Barnes collection--actually very good!
― Virginia Plain, Monday, 11 June 2012 21:12 (fourteen years ago)
a lot of controversy over the barnes move
― Mordy, Monday, 11 June 2012 21:25 (fourteen years ago)
nb i haven't seen it in the new location yet
What is Ray's? I know nothing abt coffee here but the best place for tea is Cups and Chairs at 5th and Monroe, period.

Dude I work literally 4 or 6 doors down from that place!

I just googled them and I totally know exactly who that guy is; he's always super friendly and I showed him this fancy tonic water we sell that I think he liked.
― Delbert Botts, D.D.S. (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 14:03 (fourteen years ago)
Maybe I should text you a list of all the things he buys so you can allude to them and freak him out
This opens this evening at Fleisher/Ollman. I'm clueless as to exactly what it entails, but they usually have interesting stuff there

Please rate these Philadelphia establishments, recommended to me by a random local I met at Tank Bar.
Bob & Barbara's, El Fuego, Oscar's, Little Pete's, 4th Street Deli, Tony Luke's. I was not so inebriated that I neglected to take notes.
― Virginia Plain, Friday, 15 June 2012 23:23 (fourteen years ago)
tony luke's has been my go-to for sandwiches & cheesesteaks for a long time
worried that they 'sold out' because they have a stand at citizens bank
― un® (dayo), Friday, 15 June 2012 23:24 (fourteen years ago)
dayo y don't we hang out?
― Mordy, Friday, 15 June 2012 23:27 (fourteen years ago)
Funny, you don't strike me as a "cheesesteak" kind of guy.
― Virginia Plain, Friday, 15 June 2012 23:35 (fourteen years ago)
tony luke's above all those imo. roast pork and broccoli rabe, yo. little pete's is okay if you're drunk and it's late, or if you're stranded overnight waiting for the first regional line out of the city. there are definitely better diners, but i am lucky to be not far from a couple of them. oscar's is a hole-in-the-wall that has good cheap beer specials (i used to hit it up every friday for a couple before going home when i worked a few blocks away) and did a surprisingly edible cheesesteak (at least they did a decade ago), but nothing worth searching out unless you already happen to be there drinking. bob and barbara's is an institution, with all the positives and negatives that implies. ditto fourth street deli. el fuego i've passed by a bunch of times but never been. might be pretty good, food-wise, but seems hipsterish, clientele-wise. my favorite cheap burritos in the city are still santa fe's, but a large part of that is college nostalgia.
also, many days later: i am back in the city proper, living in south philly, but i am still forced to commute to the burbs for my job, until i find something here.
i will wash blood and guts out of the gutters of the italian market by hand if it means i never have to commute to the burbs ever again.
