I can easily think of 20 canonical horror movies but I haven't seen all of them so I therefore wouldn't vote for them

like, I've never seen the entirety of the first Friday the 13th, or the first Halloween, or the first Nightmare on Elm Street, to throw out some obvious from-our-generation examples

I don't think you should go with ascending points. That would just lead to the crappier well-known films getting a few more votes that they don't need and sending me into extra-Morbsian apoplexy.

Not sure about minimum votes, either, but wouldn't necessarily oppose it.

And Picnic at Hanging Rock is definitely a horror film.

man i am obv not a good judge of this, but looking at the expansion of noms i find it nearly impossible to imagine that anyone wont be able to at least list 20 films

I have such a soft spot for gargoyles, hugely fascinating to me as a kid. it's a terrible movie no doubt, but AP otm in that the first half has some genuinely creepy moments with those gargoyle incursions into the human world. and if I have not hallucinated this, I believe bernie casey as the winged king gargoyle astride a horse is one of the most bizarre and wondrous visions beamed into american households of the 70s. def a movie for ppl whose fav part of wizard of oz were the flying monkeys.

What are some all time movies that horror fans would know but would probably be obscure to a relatively mainstream audience?

I will try to watch some of these so as to give consideration to things that should place high.

that list was the list of horror movies that i rated 10 stars on imdb within however long imdb keeps ratings (and yes that includes rubber)
