Yeah, I think the characters are much more complex than that. For example, compare Abed to Sheldon Cooper, who really is a stereotypical Aspie nerd (or at least was the last time I watched BBT): first, Abed is extremely athletic and doesn't seem to have trouble attracting women; also, he often displays a greater insight into other people's thoughts and feelings and relationships than other characters do. It's much more ambiguous whether he actually has Asperger's. And he is a film student at a community college: his 'aspie' obsession is with films and TV, not with science or technology. I can't offhand think of a stereotypical nerd character anywhere else with that sort of fixation. The hyper-imaginative childhood-regression aspects of his character don't really seem to fit the stereotype either (thinking of Sheldon or Steve Urkel etc).

He has to be one of the most unique sitcom characters I can think of.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 19:09 (fourteen years ago)
yeah i think one of the show's greatest creative victories has been to keep letting Abed zig when other shows would have him zag
― some dude, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 19:11 (fourteen years ago)
last night my friend claimed troy and abed were based on the "classic geordi laforge/lieutenant commander data pairing."

although there is a rough mapping of community characters to the star trek TNG bridge crew.

― Mordy, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 19:45 (fourteen years ago)
"classic" geordi/data
makes them sound like fkn laurel and hardy
I love TNG but that's just kinda weird

I can see Abed/Data, but Geordi/Troy doesn't work for me.

what's your objection? that it's more pasty than pale? xxp
― Mordy, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 20:50 (fourteen years ago)
maybe he thought you meant Geordi
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 20:51 (fourteen years ago)
but if chevy is riker, who is troi?
― techno pink (reddening), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 20:51 (fourteen years ago)
Troy is Jordy in that he is the link connecting/translating Abed/Data to the human world of irrational feelings etc etc.
― Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 20:52 (fourteen years ago)
uh the description of abed as "pale" was what i was questioning
― ferrante's inferranteno (some dude), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 20:53 (fourteen years ago)
well.... he's paler than Troy?
― Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 20:54 (fourteen years ago)
he was describing Data as pale
is it really going to turn into that conversation
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 20:55 (fourteen years ago)
some dude, u may also be surprised by the fact that abed is not a robot.
― Mordy, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 20:55 (fourteen years ago)
i mean i'm not like acting offended or anything, it was just a v odd choice of words
― ferrante's inferranteno (some dude), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 20:56 (fourteen years ago)
oh i see. it was a tonal misfire. i was being snarky in the original comment, i was not seriously suggesting that abed is a pale robot dude.
― Mordy, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 20:56 (fourteen years ago)
abed may not be a robot, but according to jeff he is a computer.
― techno pink (reddening), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 20:58 (fourteen years ago)
jeff is a total riker. shirley is troi, britta is worf, and pierce is wesley crusher. annie is the crystalline entity.

― Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Friday, 6 April 2012 12:44 (fourteen years ago)
Or whatever.
I would have maybe preferred a bit more action and running around and a little less narration but overall this was fantastic. I love that Abed actually made Jeff go back to the office to get the real imaginary pointy friendship hats. Also that there's now a Greendale student even older than Leonard. Also Shirley openly glorifying in the violence was lol.

I think the thing I appreciated/enjoyed the most was that at one point a few years ago I was trying to figure out how to capture the experience of really enjoyable messageboard threads in the context of mainstream entertainment and the closest thing I could imagine was basically the email/text/Facebook exchanges in this episode.
