I like the Lex

L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

no, i think it's just called "saturday soul", and it looks like its happening this saturday night

http://player.vimeo.com/video/20307099?title=0&byline=0&portrait=0

when i went it was nowhere near as corny as it looks in the video (only the DJs were dressed up) but the soundtrack for the video should give you an idea of the music

also iirc one of the DJs is markedly better than the other two

the late great, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

when i used to go (5+ years ago, it's a very long-running event) it was $5 apiece, looks like now it's $10 apiece but $5 if you show up in mod / swing / steampunk attire

the late great, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

all those corner places in the mission look exactly the same!

the late great, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

I still like the Arrow Bar haha

Blomqvist, Jesper (admrl), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:37 (fourteen years ago)

assuming it's still there and still "The Arrow Bar" and not some wine bar or something

Blomqvist, Jesper (admrl), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:38 (fourteen years ago)

xp shakey - yeah Explororist Int'l and I think we recently met irl at a party last weekend iirc?

sarahell, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:57 (fourteen years ago)

You big bully, why are you hitting that little bully? (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 21:00 (fourteen years ago)

your daughter was climbing a tree, and we were talking about the weird Asian lady who managed the Portlite Club in Oakland

sarahell, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 21:01 (fourteen years ago)

hahaha hoooooly shit I totally did not put 2 and 2 together!

You big bully, why are you hitting that little bully? (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 21:03 (fourteen years ago)

You big bully, why are you hitting that little bully? (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 21:13 (fourteen years ago)

I'm coming next week! Don't know how much time I'll have for bars, but pls places to eat dinner that are not ridiculously $$$?

tehresa, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 11:58 (fourteen years ago)

*pls recommend

tehresa, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 11:59 (fourteen years ago)

That soul night looks cheesy but kind of awesome.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 14:19 (fourteen years ago)

like i said, the video sort of gives a skewed impression - when i went only a few people were wearing swinger / mod clothes and doing the bunny hop so it didn't have the corny vibe of the video

the late great, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 14:24 (fourteen years ago)

tehresa, in what part of town are you staying and for how long?

L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 14:38 (fourteen years ago)

Near union square, this sat to next sat. I'll be in mission area quite a bit.

tehresa, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 15:01 (fourteen years ago)

Pity, there's no good food in the Mission.

L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 15:27 (fourteen years ago)

what about el farolito and cha-ya?

the late great, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 15:33 (fourteen years ago)

i ate at schmidt's, mission chinese, and la taqueria when i was in town 2 weeks ago, and enjoyed all of them, though schmidt's was not quite as good as the last time i went there. but the pea pancake with salmon appetizer there was really great.

mizzell, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 15:43 (fourteen years ago)

Steve Shasta Legendary Foodie thread has some good recommendations from SFers. This is my updated list--prices have all gone up too hah (it focuses mostly on Richmond District--where I live now--and the Tenderloin--where I used to work.) Folks who live in Mission or SOMA can give better recs since I barely make it out of "suburbs" now that I have a babby.

$4 Saigon Sandwiches
$5 Cinderella Bakery
$6 One of the taco trucks (Compadres or Tonyanese)
$10 Mangosteen
$15 Halu
$20 Burma Super Star
$25 Suppenkuche

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 15:46 (fourteen years ago)

I ate at Schmidt's a couple of weeks ago (there is a 50% Scoutmob coupon) and I quite liked it. Pretzel was great, as was the Wild Boar Sausage platter. That said if I was in the neighborhood and didn't have the coupon, I would go to Limon Rotisserie instead.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 15:48 (fourteen years ago)

I need to go to Burma Super Star sometime!
Range and Foreign Cinema in Mission might be worth a look at but they aren't exactly 'cheap eats'. I have been to both a few times for a more special occasion type thing, they're on the pricier side but not 'tasting menu' expensive. You can't really go hungry in the mission though.
I've just realised I never go out to eat around Union Sq. But for an easy lunch downtown, the Bistro restaurant in Nordstroms (in the Westfield centre) is actually surprisingly good (I went to another great one in LA so maybe it's a thing that Nordstroms does good food - I always assumed it'd be rubbish because it's in a mall). They have white chocolate bread pudding!

kinder, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 16:00 (fourteen years ago)

Schmidt's is good but for German(ic) food, I prefer Leopold's.

L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 16:02 (fourteen years ago)

there are many overrated places in the mission, two that i particularly hate are pakwan and ti couz, get terrible stomach issues every time i eat at either of those

the late great, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 16:15 (fourteen years ago)

I think Ti Couz is closed now? But yeah it's overrated as is Pakwan.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 16:18 (fourteen years ago)

does The Zam-Zam Room still exist?

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 16:20 (fourteen years ago)

I liked Pakwan when I ate there but when I got delivery it wasn't great.

kinder, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 16:22 (fourteen years ago)

Union Square is generally not great for food although you are very close to Tu Lan which is pretty good/cheap Vietnamese.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 16:23 (fourteen years ago)

i'm not saying pakwan's not tasty and cheap, just that it always gives me el mierdas

the late great, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 16:28 (fourteen years ago)

Not terribly far from Union Square and not exactly cheap but definitely good value is http://www.sahasf.com/menus.html

I go here before shows at the Great American sometimes and if you were going to Polk Street or the Tenderloin, it would be convenient.

sorry i did german in high school and college

the late great, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 16:45 (fourteen years ago)

the late great, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 16:45 (fourteen years ago)

L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

But yes, usually

L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

In the Mission, spend $10 at Kúuup and get the best tacos in SF (straight-up tacos, panuchos, salbutes ... all good.)

lukas, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 17:30 (fourteen years ago)

Tacqueria Vallarta on 24th has the best tacos - i am sorry.

sarahell, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 17:51 (fourteen years ago)

That's what I told everyone too, until Kúuup opened a couple months ago.

lukas, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 18:02 (fourteen years ago)

well then!

sarahell, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 18:09 (fourteen years ago)

had some great cambodian food at Angkor Borei on Mission way down by Zante's Pizza. The chili prawns were delicious and really enjoyed the ahmohk (like a curry fish mousse). It was pretty quiet and relaxed for a saturday night and the entrees were only maybe 10 bucks.

Fetchboy, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 18:34 (fourteen years ago)

Anybody got any recommendations for a great filipino place that's pescetarian-friendly?

Fetchboy, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 18:35 (fourteen years ago)

Angkor Borei just moved to that location - they're great

You big bully, why are you hitting that little bully? (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 18:42 (fourteen years ago)

if you want great filipino food you should probably go to where the big filipino community is - ie South SF (biggest filippino community outside of Manila!)

You big bully, why are you hitting that little bully? (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 18:43 (fourteen years ago)

Angkor Borei moved? It's been near Zante's for as long as I can remember.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 18:44 (fourteen years ago)

Daly City, too iirc

sarahell, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 18:44 (fourteen years ago)

is the chez panisse cafe worth a trek to Berkeley? My colleague has an appt there and we're considering it for dinner afterwards.

tehresa, Thursday, 5 April 2012 21:05 (fourteen years ago)

it's not a trek, just a twenty min BART ride from Union Sq, and def. worth it

og (admrl), Thursday, 5 April 2012 21:13 (fourteen years ago)

although for that kind of thing, Baywolf in Oakland is my preference

og (admrl), Thursday, 5 April 2012 21:14 (fourteen years ago)
