Health keeps breaking my routine but I ran 5 miles this morning, felt in great shape and the only real battle was against nipple-chafe cos the hot weather had me wearing diff clothes. Might actually buy those little rubber guards.

i am thinking of doing a 5k race on 6/24 and there is an option to pay $25 extra so you can do the 8-week group training thing, which is once a week on a hs track for an hour. is that gonna be cool or lame? might be helpful but i am shy
I think it would be good! Things like that are great if you need a little more motivation to run or if you want to hook up with other people to run with or if you want to push yourself just a little bit harder (this kind of happens without you necessarily realising it at the time tbh) or just for a change of scene. Would guess it would be a whole range of different abilities too.

So this time last year I though it would be a good idea to enter the Brighton marathon figuring that I would have plenty of time to get over the niggling injury I had and get myself fit ...and now all of a sudden it's in two days time and I've only done about about ten weeks of running. Don't actually feel in that bad shape and pretty sure I'll get round but there are some seriously jangly nerves going on here right now.
― French Cricket in the USA (NickB), Friday, 13 April 2012 14:04 (fourteen years ago)
just take is easy youll be fine, ten weeks is not that bad
― lag∞n, Friday, 13 April 2012 14:07 (fourteen years ago)
Seriously, as long as you don't feel hurt, you'll finish fine.
― Jeff, Friday, 13 April 2012 14:10 (fourteen years ago)
Only 177 days to the Chicago Marathon. Still only doing about 6 miles a week.
― Jeff, Friday, 13 April 2012 14:11 (fourteen years ago)
it's cool since u have 177 days
― lag∞n, Friday, 13 April 2012 14:19 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, my race tactic is to take it easy and just jog around annoying people by KIP and chatting to them a lot.

haha yes

i signed up for the 5k and the training thing, which starts 4/30. i'm sad about what bad shape i'm still in! i used to be able to run for a pretty long time but now i am back to doing run/walk intervals. i did 5 min run, 1 min walk for a half hour yesterday though, which is not bad. i'm pretty sure i can actually run 5k continuously on flatter ground but the route i run on has a big long hill which causes me to believe i can't run for that long because it's hard.

7.6 miles yday, longest I've done in about 18 months, last time I was doing that sort of distance was pre-shin splints which laid me up for 6 months last year.
So gonna be careful this time, though I am really pleased/surprised at how utterly solid and pain free my legs are in the last few months.

London marathon next weekend! I'm way off peak fitness but I'll get round. Had a few races recently so I'll hopefully be sharp enough.

^ artfully hiding my thousand yard stare. Best greasy and slightly undercooked seafront chips EVER though. Got round in 3.26, last four miles was v v grim. Walking around like I've got two metal legs of slightly different lengths now.

That's fast! Not bad for 10 weeks.

Seandalai, how did you doooo?
― Friends of Mr Caeiro (NickB), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 13:01 (fourteen years ago)
I got round :) I was about 10 minutes off my PB but I'll take it after a bad year in which I almost gave up running completely. Had some novel pain experiences caused (I think) by tying overly narrow shoes too tightly - for about two hours after the finish I couldn't put any weight on my right foot without screaming in pain and perturbing the people around me. Anyway, London's still my favourite marathon to run, the atmosphere is, as they say, unforgettable.
― NSFW Australia (seandalai), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 16:38 (fourteen years ago)
Aww good stuff! Have done London twice in the dim and distant past (about ten years ago or something) and yes, the crowds were amazing then too. Hope you're recovering alright. Tuesday was the worst day last week for me as far as fatigue goes - the bruising comes out and all the excitement wears off.

today i started the running group thing i mentioned upthread and it was actually fun! i hadn't run very far yet this year because of where i run there is a big hill that causes me to quit when i'm done but on the flat i managed to cover 3 miles and did better than all but like 2 people. i am proud!

got shin splints last year, stopped running, got new shoes (went to a gait analysis place for appropriate shoes) and after about a week of running (just 3x in that week, and very short distances), it's starting to feel tender again. aggh! i just want to run...i have developed a very strong aversion to the elliptical, while running is therapeutic.

I've just resigned myself that I'm going to live my life on the cusp of injury, if not completely injured. It's a mentally exhausting place to be, but I see no alternatives at this point.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 19:20 (fourteen years ago)
With chronic injury, there are just too many variables. You can change one thing, let some time pass and you may get better, but you don't know if the thing you changed help or if it was there mere passage of time. Then the injury comes back again, so you change something and then something else starts hurting. Then you still have the original injury to deal with along with this brand new injury. Now you are trying to isolate causes for two injuries at the same. Meanwhile you mind is completely screwing with you, second guessing every single pain. Afraid of the worst, you just end up running less and end up feeling unfulfilled by your running. Good times.

this is me! i run and think to myself, this is fantastic, wouldn't it be fabulous if i could just keep running like this? and then 5 minutes later, i get some pangs in my shins and then i get worried and decide i have to stop (because last year, i ran through the pain, and that was a BAD IDEA...)
― rayuela, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 20:02 (fourteen years ago)
running through the pain is a bad idea. stretching properly after a run is a very good one. if you don't do it already you must start.
& these strengthening exercises are a big help too.

i never stretch
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 21:33 (fourteen years ago)
Listen to your body is the worst advice. Because no one can do it, too many cognitive biases, subjectivity of pain, etc.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 21:34 (fourteen years ago)
some people don't need to but most people should.
― jed_, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 21:34 (fourteen years ago)
Plenty of recent research that shows stretching does no good.
