it's really useful!! Sometimes I forget and I would start counting my money, while still sitting at the table.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

what's really useful, Ken? "The Gambler"?

Next time I play (prob tonight) I am going to have Tep's 1991 mix playing in the background.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i just end up with 'the gambler' in my head when i'm playing a lot of poker, regardless. and i think of when kenny rogers was on the muppets, riding on that train and playing poker with rolf if i remember right.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Thursday, 3 March 2005 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Gambler" is legitimately one of my twenty favourite singles of all time. The pathos of "Somewhere in the darkness, the gambler, he broke even" is too much to bare sometimes.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 3 March 2005 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the Tetris connotations of "If you want to play the Game, boy, you gotta learn to play it right"

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 3 March 2005 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

markelby which room are you in?

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Thursday, 3 March 2005 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi Chris - sorry, haven't been on this thread. Just watched the most amusing thing - three people away at our play tournament, so they stayed in till nearly the end. Julia happened to be one of them, and she won AT LEAST 6 hands without being there! Julia, you came 2nd :) The best moment, though, was when one of the away guys (away since the very beginning, this is), was forced all-in and was dealt FOUR ACES.

A game of skill, you say? Ha!

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 4 March 2005 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

four aces? that's insane. sorry about having to leave so abruptly. i was even doing well before i left, which is unusual for me...though maybe i play better when i'm not there!

JuliaA (j_bdules), Friday, 4 March 2005 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay - my first real-money (one-table) tournament success - 2nd place and $15! I should have won, though - I was about $10,000 up on the last remaining guy, but he played phenomenally and I made like 1 mistake and the tables were turned.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 4 March 2005 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone up for a game tonight? i need to win some money, pokerroom.com's blackjack room sucked me dry in two hands.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Friday, 4 March 2005 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

When? I could do w/ s'more losing.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 4 March 2005 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

if i'm in (the house), i'm in (as in up for the game)

although might be out later on. will check this thread though.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 4 March 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

6 or so or later whatever.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Friday, 4 March 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe, but doubtful - I'm hoping Sgs will have finished her studies for the night so I can spend some quality time with her.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 4 March 2005 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Dudes? Anyone around? I fancy a torunament/game of some description. Does everyone have AIM? I'm Markelby on that too.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 4 March 2005 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Friday, 4 March 2005 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Can I play without registering or paying money or anything (I have totally skimmed this thread)

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 4 March 2005 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm in a play game playing like an absolute arsehole. Haven't I learnt *anything*?

Ailsa, you can play pretend poker, yes. www.pokerroom.com - it's pretty straightforward.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 4 March 2005 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 5 March 2005 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Where did you come, Ken? Ailsa, did you give it a go? What happened to Caitlin and Ste?

Markelby (Mark C), Saturday, 5 March 2005 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Saturday, 5 March 2005 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Saturday, 5 March 2005 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry Chris, not sure what you mean.

Oh I think I get it now.

Markelby (Mark C), Sunday, 6 March 2005 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone around tonight?

Markelby (Mark C), Sunday, 6 March 2005 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Since this thread is so moribund, here's a question from a play tourney I'm in:

Two dudes go all in; their cards are turned face up. One has two kings, the other has two fives. The flop and turn are useless; the river is a third king.

Why did the 2 fives win a side pot? And why was this side pot almost twice as big as the main pot, won by the three kings guy?? Was it anything to do with the amounts they respectively bet (kings guy put in much less cash than fives guy)?

Markelby (Mark C), Sunday, 6 March 2005 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes.

caitlin (caitlin), Sunday, 6 March 2005 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Long answer: Player A goes all in. Player B wants to raise.* Because A is all in, he can't call B's raise. So, the pot gets split into 2. Out of each player's bet, an amount equal to A's all-in bet goes in the main pot, and the rest goes in the side pot. If A has the best hand, s/he wins the main pot but the side pot goes to the next-best hand. If someone else wins the hand, they win both.

* or, equally, A wants to call but doesn't have a large enough stack, so goes all in without meeting the previous player's bet.

caitlin (caitlin), Sunday, 6 March 2005 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

funny. i was really drunk last night and managed to get 3rd in a tourny (whereas day before i kept getting 4th place)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 7 March 2005 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Some friends of mine said that their best ever performance in a real-life tourney was when they were really, really badly hungover. Their explanation was that there was no way the other players could tell whether or not they were bluffing, because most of the time they were feeling so ill that they couldn't remember what their cards actually were.

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 7 March 2005 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I lost all my pokerroom.com winnings on Saturday night in a drunken frenzy. Im laying off online poker for a while.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Monday, 7 March 2005 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember reading an interview with Daniel Negreanu where he said the reason he turned pro was because he woke up the day after his 21st birthday and realised he drunkenly gambled away all the money he'd won the past two years playing as an amateur.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 7 March 2005 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i figured i was all good after i had taken home a good chunk of change from my weekly home game at my friends house earlier. well as the night wore on and the more drunk i got the worse i was. i was calling Phil- Ken on AIM and making a drunken buffoon of myself. Of course like I've said a million times...i think online games are fixed.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Monday, 7 March 2005 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

my friend says that too - i don't see too much evidence of that. but i'm guessing there are people who join the same tournament table together and collaborate (i don't know how good pokerroom are at spotting those).

ken c (ken c), Monday, 7 March 2005 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

it just amazes me that the same person always hit the river card to win every time. its complete bullshit. im thinking of writing a complaint to pokerroom.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Monday, 7 March 2005 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

When you win it's skill; when you lose, they're fixed ;-)

(NB: you could well be right for all I know)

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 7 March 2005 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

yep!

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Monday, 7 March 2005 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

It barely seems worth bothering any more, but PLEASE can we get 5 or six of us together tonight and start a private table, or at least all hook up for the same tourney or something? 2200 GMT? Anyone?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 7 March 2005 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

im off of it for a while....or at least until i get paid.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Monday, 7 March 2005 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to apologize for my previous bouts w/ flakiness. Mark, I can be on around 2300 GMT - please to post the name of the table to this thread, and I'll be there.

FYI - there's a POKAH! area on the site where one can set up a "personal" page & possibly list folks one plays w/.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 7 March 2005 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, make it three, I'm in.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 7 March 2005 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

im on aim and i'f im feeling lucky i'll play. chrisv1918 6pm?

chrisv1918, Monday, 7 March 2005 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

So we're going for 2300 GMT/1800 EST/1700 midwest time or whatever it's called? I'd most like to be part of a one-table tourney, if we can wangle it.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 7 March 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

im dumb i don't know fancy times. i know est.

fuckie fuckie river card, Monday, 7 March 2005 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)
