do you remember a panic happening during a TM backup? it could be doing a hardcore verification of the TM disk if that happened, in which case this is normal and good behavior

it actually hasn't done a full and real back up in a couple of weeks for some reason

and it is STILL preparing

i wonder if it is a prob with my time machine hd? is there any way to verify that u think?

not that i know of. i think you need to sit tight.

the good news is you probably have a working backup in the snese that you can recover from it. if that's the case then you can always start a new time machine disk (via $$$)

I'm pretty sure that Apple is about to release MacBooks with retina displays, so if that matters to you, you should hold off buying until then.

so one prob seems solved, i think my time machine disk is corrupted. i'm diskwarrioring it now.

aw shit, "no memory" so it can't be rebuilt. i guess time machine crammed it too full or something??? argh

should i just reformat my time machine drive and start over?

maybe first try entering time machine, deleting a bunch of really old back-ups, then disk warrior it again?

how do you do that? i looked for a way in time machine proper but it didn't seem obvi.

deleting stuff in Time Machine is super annoying, you have to click on the gear that is on the Finder window it displays to you that represents the backup and delete from there

I find it totally counter-intuitive

unless you can't afford another drive, if you decide to abandon this one i would start a new time machine on a new disk. check the old one can at least restore the odd file, then move it somewhere, e.g. your parents.

hard drives suck, keep backups, they all die except for the ones that magically do not

laptop hard drives have gotten better since they have more motion sensors these days, but in the past it was basically a function of how much you moved around the laptop. I think I killed two drives over four years.

desktop drives are a crapshoot, but nothing has been as bad as the bad batch of IBM Deskstars ("death stars") that were in EVERYTHING a number of years ago. I remember that something like 90% of them went bad in under a year

speaking of hard drives and lion and so forth, why is the mofo indexing the spotlight every time i try to wake it up and thereby locking up

that is really weird, has it not finished a spotlight index at all? maybe the index is corrupted. I think there's a magic way to force it to rebuild those

add the volume to the excluded list in spotlight preferences, close, re-open and then remove it again. it'll reindex from scratch. give it a few hours to do so

update for the folks who gave me advice about my MBP: after a couple phone convos with applecare they advised me to bring it into the store and have it checked out. they think it's a logic board problem that is know to occur with 2010 MBPs, so they are replacing the LB for me. they don't think it's the HD, thankfully. and thank GOD i paid for applecare extended cuz the repair would have cost twice the price of the warranty.

i'm doing the ipad/bluetooth keyboard thing for the next couple of days, it's not a bad way to go! wondering if this shouldn't be my default travel setup, actually...

although having peeked at the new ipad screens my ol' 2 doesn't seem so nice anymore :/

Applecare is fantastic. My iPhone's home button died a couple of weeks ago and they gave me a new/refurb phone on the spot.

I never got Applecare for this 2yo MBP (stupid stupid) and now I'm crossing everything that it hangs on for another year. No faults of any kind so far.

gotta get it for the laptops!!!

also i must admit the new android phones are starting to look real good compared to iphones, maybe not better but real good
