you don't see anything like this (at least no the internal drive)?

http://www.pondini.org/OSX/DU9_files/DU%209a%20Disk%20Utility%20SMART%20status.jpg

i am a bit confused about which drive your problem is with

is time machine running now?

caek, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:52 (fourteen years ago)

oh yes! i do see it, sorry i had clicked on the partition. it IS verified.

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:52 (fourteen years ago)

hmm, that looks like some weird seagate program? did you install anything when you got the drive?

caek, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:52 (fourteen years ago)

SMART! xp

caek, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:53 (fourteen years ago)

i am a bit confused about which drive your problem is with

so am i! i keep getting these kernel panic things, but ALSO, time machine is refusing to just go ahead and back up, it seems to stall out on "preparing"

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:53 (fourteen years ago)

and yes it is running now

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:53 (fourteen years ago)

and no, i never install that HD add-on software garbage... i don't think!!

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:53 (fourteen years ago)

i think maybe you did but i'm sure it's harmless

caek, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:54 (fourteen years ago)

this just happened:

Mar 28 12:55:09 Marks-MacBook-Pro com.apple.backupd[363]: Finished scan

maybe it'll start backing up for real now?

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:54 (fourteen years ago)

fingers crossed anyway

caek, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:54 (fourteen years ago)

yeah that is not bad news

caek, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:54 (fourteen years ago)

still preparing :/

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:55 (fourteen years ago)

i feel like i've been preparing all my life for this backup

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:55 (fourteen years ago)

put me in, coach

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:55 (fourteen years ago)

be prepared

caek, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:56 (fourteen years ago)

do you remember a panic happening during a TM backup? it could be doing a hardcore verification of the TM disk if that happened, in which case this is normal and good behavior

caek, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:57 (fourteen years ago)

it actually hasn't done a full and real back up in a couple of weeks for some reason

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:59 (fourteen years ago)

and it is STILL preparing

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:59 (fourteen years ago)

i wonder if it is a prob with my time machine hd? is there any way to verify that u think?

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 17:00 (fourteen years ago)

I'm really nervous over here for you man

dayo, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 17:01 (fourteen years ago)

not that i know of. i think you need to sit tight.

the good news is you probably have a working backup in the snese that you can recover from it. if that's the case then you can always start a new time machine disk (via $$$)

caek, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 17:01 (fourteen years ago)

where do i get this "$$$"

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 17:03 (fourteen years ago)

10.7.5 update

dayo, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 17:04 (fourteen years ago)

short film revenue iirc

caek, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 17:04 (fourteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure that Apple is about to release MacBooks with retina displays, so if that matters to you, you should hold off buying until then.

schwantz, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 17:42 (fourteen years ago)

so one prob seems solved, i think my time machine disk is corrupted. i'm diskwarrioring it now.

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 17:45 (fourteen years ago)

aw shit, "no memory" so it can't be rebuilt. i guess time machine crammed it too full or something??? argh

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 17:48 (fourteen years ago)

should i just reformat my time machine drive and start over?

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 17:51 (fourteen years ago)

maybe first try entering time machine, deleting a bunch of really old back-ups, then disk warrior it again?

dan selzer, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 18:14 (fourteen years ago)

how do you do that? i looked for a way in time machine proper but it didn't seem obvi.

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

deleting stuff in Time Machine is super annoying, you have to click on the gear that is on the Finder window it displays to you that represents the backup and delete from there

I find it totally counter-intuitive

unless you can't afford another drive, if you decide to abandon this one i would start a new time machine on a new disk. check the old one can at least restore the odd file, then move it somewhere, e.g. your parents.

caek, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 18:19 (fourteen years ago)

ya that's prob not a bad idea cuz the thing is accessible, even if it is corrupted.

shit.

i hate hard drives.

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 18:23 (fourteen years ago)

racist

caek, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 18:26 (fourteen years ago)

sigh, is there any hard drive company that is remotely reliable/not crazy expensive these days?

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 18:34 (fourteen years ago)

nope

THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 18:34 (fourteen years ago)

we are going to look back one day and laugh bitterly at this.

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 18:35 (fourteen years ago)

market still not recovered from the thai floods i think

caek, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 18:36 (fourteen years ago)

I've stuck with Western Digital Caviar Black for a while.

Prices have come a bit down I think.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 18:37 (fourteen years ago)

fwiw WD has always been fine by me

caek, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 18:37 (fourteen years ago)

digital caviar sounds delicious

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 18:42 (fourteen years ago)

max, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

^^ interesting piece about why its hard to figure out who makes the best drives

max, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

i actually took that guy's advice last time i bought a HD (not the one in questsh)

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

hard drives suck, keep backups, they all die except for the ones that magically do not

laptop hard drives have gotten better since they have more motion sensors these days, but in the past it was basically a function of how much you moved around the laptop. I think I killed two drives over four years.

desktop drives are a crapshoot, but nothing has been as bad as the bad batch of IBM Deskstars ("death stars") that were in EVERYTHING a number of years ago. I remember that something like 90% of them went bad in under a year

mh, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 19:05 (fourteen years ago)

i have so many hard drives :S

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 19:18 (fourteen years ago)

sorry for your loss

༼◍ྀ ౪ ◍ི ༽ (cozen), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 19:19 (fourteen years ago)

speaking of hard drives and lion and so forth, why is the mofo indexing the spotlight every time i try to wake it up and thereby locking up

the late great, Thursday, 29 March 2012 01:42 (fourteen years ago)

that is really weird, has it not finished a spotlight index at all? maybe the index is corrupted. I think there's a magic way to force it to rebuild those
