oh it doesn't have to be that one specifically, I understand that was a pretty special occasion. You can pick one of the more boring '70s/80s ones

Number None, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 09:59 (fourteen years ago)

i mean like, you would count carling cup/worthington cup/coca cola cup etc to be the same thing but then you would only be "kind of" correct to count them all under "league cup"?

ugh. i fucked up my sentence! the last bit was going to say "you would only be correct to count them under "league cup" then i got scared that maybe the format has changed or something that i didn't know about so added "kind of" to try and cover myself without editing the sentence so it made any sense.

i forgot what my point even was.. i think it was that you would be correct to use the "generic" name without the branding when counting. but if you add the branding then you would be specifically talking about the brand? I brought it up because the name changed several times and people do often call it with the sponsor name.. whereas people seldom call the FA cup "The FA cup with Budweiser"?

going back to only talk in sarcasm from now on.

we are not bemused (onimo), Thursday, 29 March 2012 12:33 (fourteen years ago)

I reckon there'll be a quango somewhere picking the Olympics squad on basis of various small-p political factors. If Beckham and/or a Scottish or Northern Irish player make the team you'll know what I mean.

Don't see why Jonny Evans shouldn't be in it on merit

Has he turned good? Can't say I've noticed him being conspicuously terrible since the 6-1, in fairness.

Think most Utd fans will tell you he's been one of our players of the season

evans and koscielny have matured and become much less error-prone over the course of this season- the latter is very nearly the player he's been claimed as by sam since day 1 (he was p shite for most of the interim)

less of the same (darraghmac), Thursday, 29 March 2012 14:15 (fourteen years ago)

I thought I was the one who (over)rated Koscielny. Think he ought to start for France this summer tbh.

boxall, Thursday, 29 March 2012 14:46 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i dont remember being that crazy about us buying some no-name with 1 year in a top division in his mid twenties. i also don't think he's been much better lately, it is more to do w/ the opposition being shit. he is a middling-to-good player who could one day become a very good player.

Thoughts? You must have loads. (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 29 March 2012 15:02 (fourteen years ago)

Michael Cox has said that Koscielny is already better than Vermaelen, for whatever that's worth.

boxall, Thursday, 29 March 2012 15:05 (fourteen years ago)

i dont know who that is, for whatever that's worth.

Thoughts? You must have loads. (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 29 March 2012 15:38 (fourteen years ago)

He does http://www.zonalmarking.net/ and pieces/blogs for ESPN, the Guardian and some others, I think his match reviews are great. We've definitely talked about him before on some thread or another.

boxall, Thursday, 29 March 2012 15:40 (fourteen years ago)

i hear owen coyle's his biggest fan

Chris, Thursday, 29 March 2012 16:22 (fourteen years ago)

(of michael cox, not koscielny).

oooh i like ZM, just never remembered his name i guess.

Cech set to extend his Chelsea career after Villas-Boas exit

Lots to read in there, presumably thanks to AVB gabbing, but the headline identifies the problem exactly, really.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 29 March 2012 18:04 (fourteen years ago)

you guys give avb way, way too easy a time

yes abramovich kneecapped him by reneging on the full summer squad overhaul he was hired to oversee but that doesnt excuse avb's rank ineptitude in everything he did after that. if he knew he couldnt ship them out til next summer then why bother forcing them to play in a manner unsuited to them and make a tit out of himself ostracising the big dogs? either tactically inflexible, vain, stupid - or all three

let's not forget his "win it for jt" crassness either

r|t|c, Thursday, 29 March 2012 18:21 (fourteen years ago)

yeah but the Chelsea players are such twats though

Number None, Thursday, 29 March 2012 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

What they were to be utterly unimpressed with was Villas-Boas's man management. Drogba came to the new manager to ask if he would have a fair opportunity to start matches with, or ahead of, owner's favourite Torres, or be allowed to leave. The Ivorian was told that Villas-Boas considered him a fading force; one that he would sell if he could but wasn't yet allowed to.

Drogba walked out of the meeting bemused by the manager's bluntness, quickly passing the tactless message onto others about to suffer similar fates.

Frank Lampard the scorer of at least 10 Premier League goals in an unprecedented nine consecutive seasons suggested he could help the team by playing off the main striker. In front of his teammates, Villas-Boas accused the England international of only being interested in scoring goals, adding that Lampard was "not his type of player". Here again, was the lack of "emotional intelligence" those who knew Villas-Boas had worried about.

not the first grumbles i've heard about verm lately, has he really fallen off?

pretty shocked that he and koscielny are the same age

r|t|c, Thursday, 29 March 2012 18:33 (fourteen years ago)

I still think he's very good. The major criticism I've heard is that he's reckless, will creep forward looking to head off (or join) attacks but get caught out of position. He's been in and out of the side with injuries and variously paired with Kosc, Mertesacker and Djourou, factors that prob don't help.

boxall, Thursday, 29 March 2012 18:39 (fourteen years ago)

beckenbauer in his prime would get stuffed next to that lot so yeah prob not

r|t|c, Thursday, 29 March 2012 19:11 (fourteen years ago)

holy fuck is that article meant to be on drogba's or lampard's side?

less of the same (darraghmac), Thursday, 29 March 2012 20:51 (fourteen years ago)

"Every club gets breaks here and there, you get good ones and bad ones. It evens itself out over the season, that will never change."

What are you thinking, Ferguson? This should appear as a disclaimer on every interview he ever does from now on.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 29 March 2012 21:08 (fourteen years ago)

In front of his teammates, Villas-Boas accused the England international of only being interested in scoring goals, adding that Lampard was "not his type of player".

Yeah, see, despite being one hundred percent true this is fucking terrible man-management.

i'd imagine that when you're trying to organise these heaving lumpen cunts into some semblance of discipline the perma-indulged biscuitlover trying to tell you where he should play in frot of the rest of the team would be irksome
