personally, i feel it has been inept.

firstly, there is 1 massive elephant in the quiet stadium. if we had wilshere at any point this season, you have to presume we'd be in a lot better shape. not only because he improves our team, but it means our midfield 3 would have someone to swap with when they are fatigued, we would have been less likely to play 1 more rookie in the 8-2, would have started the season with some stability etc. He may be a cunt but he is an increbile footballer at a club where such things are in short supply.

theo has been shit. arshavin has been worse. gervinho has had a shocking season. chamakh, park, what is the fucking point? if rvp had a typical season (i.e. injury) - we'd be in the bottom half of the table. we have had to rely on a guy who regularly doesn't play for 6 months at a time. our frontline is a mess, held together with sellotape.

until sagna and vermaelan came back, our defence was even worse. selling eboue and clichy and replacing them with jenkinson and gibbs was negligant behaviour. santos, for the 4 games he was alive, was a lw played out of position. sq is still at the club and djourou is still played regularly.

tbf i like our middle. song (/frimpong), arteta (/ wilshere?) ramsey (/ rosicky) is the third best midfield in the country behind city and spurs.

we have sucked though. 8-2. whatever the blackburn result was, i can't remember. the first milan game. sure, the embarrassing loses stick out but it is just as much the loss of style and charisma. we may be on a winning run now but there isn't anything memorable happening in these games. theo will make a couple nice runs. rvi has a nice touch. woo, fucking, hoo. where has the inventive passing gone?

we shouldn't be 3rd. chelsea are a team many of us said should be top at the start of the season, they shouldn't be 5th. spurs are better than us. newcastle could even be pushing us.

i feel wenger should be treated like kkingkenny and be moved 'up' and more importantly 'away' at the end of the season. i dont even know what he adds anymore. but at least pat rice will be replaced this summer and our new '#2 could hopefully be someone more inventive, willing to actually work on our issues. someone hopefully willing to push wenger instead of some shitty total football sychophant.

my head is already with next season. wilshere will be back. podolski and vertonghen are upgrades, miyiachi bartley and aoc should hopefully push out deadwood. the current streak should build up their confidence for an opposite effect to the end of last season. this win run really came way too late for me to give a fuck though for this season.

i think of 3rd as an act of other teams incompetence, not as something we earned.

Thoughts? You must have loads. (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 25 March 2012 00:29 (fourteen years ago)

omino - i think he said in the league. if not it would be different, we have been p englishy for a while in the carling cup and i presume the likes of randall, wilshere, simpson, walcott, gibbs as a winger etc. scored together.

Thoughts? You must have loads. (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 25 March 2012 00:30 (fourteen years ago)

if i had said this

actually, when i say this......

ah cmon now you were doing so well....

yeah, can dig this, relate especially to this feeling when we finished 5th under jol the year of the lasagne- it was a year of serious underachievement for arsenal and we shoulda been outta sight weeks before. you have to revise what defines a good season in relation to the opportunities that arise, call it league inflation or something.

Even RAWK has to tone it down a this point but this tickled me

My son was physically sick when I told him the result today.

This is no exaggeration he actually vomited. He feels ill at the thought of losing to Wigan.

xpost If Taiwo is fast then I wish he would run quickly. He has nothing like Bale's pace. If he were any good Milan wouldn't be loaning him out, and he'd be able to get to a better club than QPR. He's not some Baleseque kid, he's on the brink of turning 27. If he had the ability, he'd actually be good by now.

Viva Brother Beyond (ithappens), Sunday, 25 March 2012 08:43 (fourteen years ago)

Pretty sure they said first time 3 English players had scored for Arsenal in a season, not 2 - Walcott, AOC & Gibbs.

boxall, Sunday, 25 March 2012 15:02 (fourteen years ago)

Oh maybe you all meant in the same match, w/e

boxall, Sunday, 25 March 2012 15:03 (fourteen years ago)

i was asking after taiwo as cover at lb tbh, not as cover for bale at wherever the fuck he thinks he's playing these days

less of the same (darraghmac), Sunday, 25 March 2012 15:05 (fourteen years ago)

PPS rvi has a nice touch. woo, fucking, hoo.

FP'd you for this! You don't deserve such an amazing player/season if that's how you treat him. What was it you said in the fall, Van Persie's not as influential as Song or Vermaelen b/c 'this team can score from anywhere, even full-back now Santos is arrived' or similar? shameful.

boxall, Sunday, 25 March 2012 15:06 (fourteen years ago)

i think it's a conceit attempting to dispel the (completely true) assertion that arsenal rely more heavily on rvp than any other team in the top ?6? relies on one single player

less of the same (darraghmac), Sunday, 25 March 2012 15:07 (fourteen years ago)

I would amend that to any other team in the top 6 leagues.

boxall, Sunday, 25 March 2012 15:08 (fourteen years ago)

you'd assume they'd strengthen were it to be so

less of the same (darraghmac), Sunday, 25 March 2012 15:18 (fourteen years ago)

oof was for ben arfa but would transfer just as easily to boxall's takedown

less of the same (darraghmac), Sunday, 25 March 2012 15:18 (fourteen years ago)

Y'all not bored of regurgitating that one yet? True or not, and next season if he leaves blah blah whatever, Arsenal are gonna finish top four AGAIN this season.

Plus saying it the day after a game they won 3-0 in which rvp didn't score looks both hollow and a bit whiny.

Upt0eleven, Sunday, 25 March 2012 15:31 (fourteen years ago)

Where would ilf be without hollow & whiny?

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 25 March 2012 15:40 (fourteen years ago)

no that's true, we were only responding to sam's attempted sidelining of it as a thing

less of the same (darraghmac), Sunday, 25 March 2012 15:41 (fourteen years ago)

3-0 sure, but it's Villa

RVP would've had an excellent goal too if he hadn't met his match in the brilliant defender Stephen Warnock.

boxall, Sunday, 25 March 2012 15:57 (fourteen years ago)

I only saw the second half of the Chelsea Spurs game but what I saw was quite exciting, admittedly because Spurs looked the better team and more likely to win. Mata free kick aside, Chelsea looked very poor.

I worry about what Redknapp's done with the front four or five though - there were countless times when Adebayor was attacking from the left because Bale was elsewhere, VDV doesn't work on the right, Modric was at least better in the centre, but I don't think it's any coincidence that we've stopped winning since we stopped playing our attacking players, y'know, in position. But overjoyed with a draw, hopefully that's the end of the tough patch, everything from now on should be winnable.

Gonna watch the Crouch goal now...

Also does every team collapse in form after a Carling Cup win? Spurs, Birmingham, Liverpool. I suppose Chelsea and United have done alright in their seasons.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Sunday, 25 March 2012 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

matt, the first half was awwwwful

oh come on now. taken out of context that looks bad but the context, dammit! the context of "relying on 1 player for any styled attacking threat is shocking for a club like arsenal". the context is week after week feeling dismayed whenever our other forwards or playmakers get on the ball.

it is not a distant memory watching a stylish and exciting arsenal team - it was only last season we had the possibly the best playmaker in europe! that passage was quite obviously about the disappointment of a season based around us not being anywhere close to the standards we held ourselves too just a year ago. Oh but we have 1 great attacking player instead of the 4 we had last time. No wonder he's not signing a new contract.

[i still don't agree with the one man team thing but if you were to change that to 'one man attack' i'd have no issue.]

Thoughts? You must have loads. (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 25 March 2012 16:44 (fourteen years ago)

Admittedly the midfield is more workmanlike than it's been in a long time - tho Song is v underrated as a passer (overrated as a dmid) and if Rosicky & Benayoun were rotated more w/ Ramsey they might all have found better form.

Admittedly Gervinho and usually Walcott are dispiriting to watch.

boxall, Sunday, 25 March 2012 16:52 (fourteen years ago)

lol rosicky has played quite a bit this season and has been awful up until about 2 months ago.

Thoughts? You must have loads. (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 25 March 2012 17:08 (fourteen years ago)

only 12 league starts, that's 10 fewer than Ramsey who began to look tired quite early, you'd think Wenger would've learned his lesson w/ Wilshere's never ending succession of stress reactions.

boxall, Sunday, 25 March 2012 17:19 (fourteen years ago)

The first time Arsenal had had two English goalscorers in the league since October 1997, when Platt, Parlour and Wright registered in a 5-0 win against Barnsley.

Platt! Totally forgot he played for Arsenal.

Lovely second from Newcastle. Counterattacking goals should count double.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 25 March 2012 21:53 (fourteen years ago)

it is funny how Dalglish's name is in the title of this thread

I agree with DC that 0-0 at Chelsea is a good result for almost anyone and is thus effectively, objectively, the end of a bad run of results.

the pinefox, Monday, 26 March 2012 14:00 (fourteen years ago)

that's true to a point (literally) but 9 pts from 24 isn't much better than 8 pts from 21 looking at it objectively.

It'll be judged in hindsight depending on whether we pull out of it (justifiable run down to fixture list vagaries) or continue to struggle (bottled it again down to players, redknapp, rotation)

less of the same (darraghmac), Monday, 26 March 2012 14:18 (fourteen years ago)

i feel wenger should be treated like kkingkenny and be moved 'up' and more importantly 'away' at the end of the season. i dont even know what he adds anymore.

I don't think there are many managers who would have been able to pull that group of Arsenal players out of a start as abysmal as the one they had this season, certainly not enough to get them third and winning more or less by routine. There's a real "careful what you wish for" thing going on here.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Monday, 26 March 2012 14:42 (fourteen years ago)

I just mildly praised Arsene Wenger. God.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Monday, 26 March 2012 14:43 (fourteen years ago)

his players

less of the same (darraghmac), Monday, 26 March 2012 14:48 (fourteen years ago)

Wenger is worthy of praise. Criticise away for the shambles they were left in in September, but the turnaround since has been astonishing. That I suspect the team still isn't much good is cause for even more personal acclaim tbh.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 26 March 2012 15:10 (fourteen years ago)

Lop out the first seven games and they'd be level on points at the top.
