I didnt even fuck with the first NES game; I went straight to the second one, which was an adaptation of the (first) arcade game...

the first NES game is like stockholm syndrome for a whole generation of children
― Nhex, Friday, 23 March 2012 16:23 (fourteen years ago)
It's got great music, absolutely horrible controls. If you lose Donatello/Leonardo you may as well hit reset. The underwater level gave me strife as a kid but i think after 4 or 5 tries I figured it out and it's actually pretty easy to beat once you get through it. Wading through the relentless respawning armies in the following stage, however...
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 23 March 2012 16:28 (fourteen years ago)
^i played through this game so many times
― 40oz of tears (Jordan), Friday, 23 March 2012 16:44 (fourteen years ago)
yeah, it's really the first sewer/city level that's the worst
this is coming from someone who was readily able to beat the speeder stage in Battletoads
― Nhex, Friday, 23 March 2012 16:51 (fourteen years ago)
I salute you. That thing destroyed me
― Number None, Friday, 23 March 2012 16:53 (fourteen years ago)
This is like the zenith of bad remakes
― Raymond Cummings, Friday, 23 March 2012 16:57 (fourteen years ago)
Wow @ speeder stage in Battletoads. You are a god among men.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 23 March 2012 17:03 (fourteen years ago)
my memory of being a kid reading Nintendo Power is that every other issue was about Battletoads (and the rest were inexplicably about Star Tropics)
― 40oz of tears (Jordan), Friday, 23 March 2012 17:05 (fourteen years ago)
lololol
― dies irate (loves laboured breathing), Friday, 23 March 2012 17:07 (fourteen years ago)
Maybe this 300 page TMNT graphic novel I have from 88 will finally be worth something.
― calstars, Friday, 23 March 2012 18:08 (fourteen years ago)
i wonder if this is the reason for all the tmnt references on tv shows l8ly
― Lamp, Friday, 23 March 2012 20:03 (fourteen years ago)
no thats because tmnt is a permanent part of the pop culture zeitgeist
― ♆ (gr8080), Friday, 23 March 2012 21:00 (fourteen years ago)
oh man i had the sickest vocal sample of krang shrieking SHREEEEEEDDDDDERRRR that i used to loop over synth-y noize tracks o i hope i still have it
― Lamp, Friday, 23 March 2012 21:07 (fourteen years ago)
see?
― ♆ (gr8080), Friday, 23 March 2012 21:08 (fourteen years ago)
i have to say tho that the cartoon and the snes game is probably a much bigger part of my pop culture zeitgeist than the og movies as much as i enjoy 'turtles in time'

can't believe there's not a chillwave band called Star Tropics. or Tar Stropics.
― 40oz of tears (Jordan), Friday, 23 March 2012 21:17 (fourteen years ago)
lol i have a song called 'star tropics'
― Lamp, Friday, 23 March 2012 21:21 (fourteen years ago)
haha
― 40oz of tears (Jordan), Friday, 23 March 2012 21:54 (fourteen years ago)
star tropics is my favorite game of all time most days
― ♆ (gr8080), Friday, 23 March 2012 22:29 (fourteen years ago)
star tropics is good stuff.
was able to get aaaall the way to the technodrome in tmnt and some sadistic shit w an autoscrolling screen where you had to diffuse bombs in battletoads. could never beat either, and man, did i ever waste a lot of time trying.
god, even thinking about these games is basically giving me an aneurysm!!!
― original bgm, Friday, 23 March 2012 23:01 (fourteen years ago)
also getting mad at youtube for not letting me watch 'shredder's many jabs at krang' in my region of the world
― original bgm, Friday, 23 March 2012 23:03 (fourteen years ago)
yes
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 23 March 2012 23:12 (fourteen years ago)
How were you able to beat the speeder stage? That part is impossible. Game-breaking bug and they never expected anyone to beat the game.
― Spleen of Hearts (kingfish), Friday, 23 March 2012 23:14 (fourteen years ago)
the other levels were nearly impossible - i never did beat the final tower, even using the warps to get there. but the speeder stage could be memorized and doable if you did it a million times. i probably still have it committed to muscle memory, considering how many times i died over and over again. i vaguely remember pausing a lot, training to learn the placement of the blocks and such
now the snake and unicycle levels, forget it.. i think i maybe beat them once ever, if that

yknow mikey bay should make a live action 'bubble bobble' movie that shitd be real
― Lamp, Saturday, 24 March 2012 00:04 (fourteen years ago)
omg yes the whole point of bubble bobble is explosions basically
― ♆ (gr8080), Saturday, 24 March 2012 00:08 (fourteen years ago)
bubble bobble is about FRIENDSHIP
― original bgm, Saturday, 24 March 2012 00:19 (fourteen years ago)
used nhex's method of pausing and memorizing nintendo power maps to beat the speeder stage of battletoads iirc
― original bgm, Saturday, 24 March 2012 00:20 (fourteen years ago)
which turtle is Shia Lebouf playing. also what percentage of the Turtles' dialogue will be an offensively awkward attempt at street lingo as filtered through alien amphibians
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 24 March 2012 00:53 (fourteen years ago)
as part of mikey bay's homage to silent classics like 'the artist' the turtles won't have any dialogue
― Lamp, Saturday, 24 March 2012 00:58 (fourteen years ago)
the pause music in battletoads is better than 99% of other music
― humba (NZA), Saturday, 24 March 2012 02:01 (fourteen years ago)
i think i always lost in in the speeder stage on one when you were supposed to jump twice?
― humba (NZA), Saturday, 24 March 2012 02:02 (fourteen years ago)
turtles in time was at aladdin's castle in the mall, many a quarter rolled into that machine...it was right next to samurai showdown
― humba (NZA), Saturday, 24 March 2012 02:03 (fourteen years ago)
fuckin loved BattleToads
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 24 March 2012 02:24 (fourteen years ago)
fuck yeah brb still playin battletoads
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 24 March 2012 02:30 (fourteen years ago)
I spent a lot of time playing the original ninja turtles arcade game at bowling alleys . First video game that I ever beat!
― Large Sack (Empty) (latebloomer), Saturday, 24 March 2012 03:37 (fourteen years ago)
me too!
kind of felt like it was the day i became a man.
― ♆ (gr8080), Saturday, 24 March 2012 03:47 (fourteen years ago)
i'm still mad that the first time i ever played it I was getting my ass kicked by one of those robot-machine thingies and my friend (who was Michaelangelo) was nearby and his sister was screaming KURT SHOOT HIM! over and over but the dude kept jumping for whatever reason because he apparently couldn't master both buttons at the same time and finally after I died he figured out what he aws doing wrong and vaporized it.
I burnt his house down in retaliation. hope he's fucking happy.
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 24 March 2012 13:18 (fourteen years ago)
My family started a Christmas tradition a few years ago where we sit around and eat Christmas snacks and watch my brother beat the NES Ninja Turtles game.
― Marilyn Hagerty: the terroir of tiny town (Abbbottt), Saturday, 24 March 2012 16:51 (fourteen years ago)
the OG one? aws that even possible? that game was insanely difficult
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 24 March 2012 16:52 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah that's why it became a tradition. That game lead to so many fights between me and my siblings growing up. If my brother got a game over, he'd throw the controller at me and have a tantrum. Day ruined.
― Marilyn Hagerty: the terroir of tiny town (Abbbottt), Saturday, 24 March 2012 16:55 (fourteen years ago)
Like most video games, I really only liked the part where you're walking around on the overworld map (where you can still get your ass killed, wtf).
