the sir edmund hillary of sitting through pauly shore films (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 16 March 2012 23:21 (fourteen years ago)

thanks, all. I'll be there mid-april, exact dates tbc but roughly 4/7-13. kinder, I didn't realize you were an sf ilxor!

tehresa, Saturday, 17 March 2012 02:58 (fourteen years ago)

I am! For the time being, anyhow. I was wondering if you guys ever fapped, I think there was one a couple of years ago? but I hadn't been here long also I was scared....

two weeks pass...

I just moved to the bay area. Staying in temporary digs in temescal until they're done with the carpet at our awesome new place near where the mission/dubocetriagnle/Castro meet (right by sushi zone).

I'm always looking for more cool shit to do in the area. Already have plans to check out pancakes and noise on Sundays at the lab and maybe make it a semi regular thing. I saw 222 hyde's radioactivity night listed on the east bay express and tried to go on Friday but the bartender said she'd never heard of such a thing. Come to this thread to see that a couple ilxors djed that night once upon a time. Anything like this still go on? Anybody got any cool shows/gigs coming up?

Anybody got tips for a good mission bar crawl that starts closer to the outer mission and ends by market?

500 Club!

Blomqvist, Jesper (admrl), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 19:57 (fourteen years ago)

I <3 SF bars

Blomqvist, Jesper (admrl), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 19:57 (fourteen years ago)

El Rio near Mission & Valencia (south of Cesar Chavez) is a good place to start, great outdoor area. Then there's Phone Booth on 25th/South Van Ness which I like for some reason even though it's small. You can pretty much smoke in there if that's your thing. Medjool on Mission/21st isn't amazing but the roof terrace is cool. Homestead on 19th/Folsom is good too, and I've ended up in Beauty Bar on 19th/Mission a few times (gets crowded and a bit shitty later on though ime).

And Make-out room is fun!

kinder, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:01 (fourteen years ago)

Does it live up to its name, I bet not

Blomqvist, Jesper (admrl), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:01 (fourteen years ago)

I prefer the Throw-up Room on Guerrero

Blomqvist, Jesper (admrl), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:02 (fourteen years ago)

Pop's on 24th is enjoyably dive-y, a few blocks from my friends' rad record store.

sarahell, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:04 (fourteen years ago)

do they still have the saturday night "northern soul" thing at the elbo room? that was always big fun.

the late great, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:07 (fourteen years ago)

and also on the route

the late great, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:08 (fourteen years ago)

hate to admit but i always enjoyed the backyard at zeitgeist, even though it's like the portlandia funhouse-mirror version of SF

the late great, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:08 (fourteen years ago)

the radioactivity night's replacement is haceteria btw
my fave bar was the phone booth at 25th and south van ness, but that was partially due to proximity & comfort

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:10 (fourteen years ago)

also like the attic on 24th quite a bit

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

Shout-out for The Attic on 24th, btw

L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

is the phone booth not a lez bar? that's what i always thought.

the late great, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

Ha ha!

L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

I miss SF bars. NYC bars are more like carefully engineered and over decorated "fun zones" and in brooklyn they're all like ex-auto shops filled with wacky furniture and pinball machines etc.
:(

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:12 (fourteen years ago)

phone booth not lez bar! but speaking of, wild wild west is a great lez bar! I mean, all are welcome there of course (in bernal heights)

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:13 (fourteen years ago)

I can't vouch for lez effectiveness tho

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:13 (fourteen years ago)

Verdugo Bar in my current hood (NE LA) reminds me of a Mission bar

Blomqvist, Jesper (admrl), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:13 (fourteen years ago)

am i thinking of another tiny corner bar in the mission?

the late great, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:14 (fourteen years ago)

I like Verdugo Bar too! I also miss LA bars.
:( :( :( :/

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:15 (fourteen years ago)

Actually, just went to sweater funk at elbo last Saturday night, late great!
And thanks for the tip on haceteria, will definitely be hitting that up.

Fetchboy, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:16 (fourteen years ago)

admrl, did you ever go to Ye Coach and Horses in LA?

L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:17 (fourteen years ago)

Pop's on 24th is enjoyably dive-y, a few blocks from my friends' rad record store.

wait - is this that record explorist shop or whatever it's called? some good stuff in there

You big bully, why are you hitting that little bully? (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:17 (fourteen years ago)

cool, some friends of mine are involved in sweater funk and it's a pretty good night! never been to haceteria, but I can't imagine it being anything but cool.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

yes, michael. I saw England vs. Poland there

Blomqvist, Jesper (admrl), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

the soul thing i am thinking of is like mod 60s soul, never been to sweater funk, hope you enjoyed it though

re: corner lez bars in the mission i realize now i was thinking of lexington club

the late great, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:19 (fourteen years ago)

is the soul thing night beat?

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:21 (fourteen years ago)

I like the Lex

L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

no, i think it's just called "saturday soul", and it looks like its happening this saturday night

http://player.vimeo.com/video/20307099?title=0&byline=0&portrait=0

when i went it was nowhere near as corny as it looks in the video (only the DJs were dressed up) but the soundtrack for the video should give you an idea of the music

also iirc one of the DJs is markedly better than the other two

the late great, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

when i used to go (5+ years ago, it's a very long-running event) it was $5 apiece, looks like now it's $10 apiece but $5 if you show up in mod / swing / steampunk attire

the late great, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

all those corner places in the mission look exactly the same!

the late great, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

I still like the Arrow Bar haha

Blomqvist, Jesper (admrl), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:37 (fourteen years ago)

assuming it's still there and still "The Arrow Bar" and not some wine bar or something

Blomqvist, Jesper (admrl), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:38 (fourteen years ago)

xp shakey - yeah Explororist Int'l and I think we recently met irl at a party last weekend iirc?

sarahell, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 20:57 (fourteen years ago)

wait waht

You big bully, why are you hitting that little bully? (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 21:00 (fourteen years ago)

your daughter was climbing a tree, and we were talking about the weird Asian lady who managed the Portlite Club in Oakland

sarahell, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 21:01 (fourteen years ago)

hahaha hoooooly shit I totally did not put 2 and 2 together!

nice to meet you!

You big bully, why are you hitting that little bully? (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 21:03 (fourteen years ago)

i thought you were trying to be incognito!

sarahell, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 21:08 (fourteen years ago)

nah I'm just stupid

You big bully, why are you hitting that little bully? (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 21:13 (fourteen years ago)

I'm coming next week! Don't know how much time I'll have for bars, but pls places to eat dinner that are not ridiculously $$$?

tehresa, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 11:58 (fourteen years ago)

*pls recommend

tehresa, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 11:59 (fourteen years ago)

That soul night looks cheesy but kind of awesome.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 14:19 (fourteen years ago)

like i said, the video sort of gives a skewed impression - when i went only a few people were wearing swinger / mod clothes and doing the bunny hop so it didn't have the corny vibe of the video

the late great, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 14:24 (fourteen years ago)

tehresa, in what part of town are you staying and for how long?

L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 14:38 (fourteen years ago)

Near union square, this sat to next sat. I'll be in mission area quite a bit.
