I just moved to the bay area. Staying in temporary digs in temescal until they're done with the carpet at our awesome new place near where the mission/dubocetriagnle/Castro meet (right by sushi zone).

I'm always looking for more cool shit to do in the area. Already have plans to check out pancakes and noise on Sundays at the lab and maybe make it a semi regular thing. I saw 222 hyde's radioactivity night listed on the east bay express and tried to go on Friday but the bartender said she'd never heard of such a thing. Come to this thread to see that a couple ilxors djed that night once upon a time. Anything like this still go on? Anybody got any cool shows/gigs coming up?

Anybody got tips for a good mission bar crawl that starts closer to the outer mission and ends by market?

El Rio near Mission & Valencia (south of Cesar Chavez) is a good place to start, great outdoor area. Then there's Phone Booth on 25th/South Van Ness which I like for some reason even though it's small. You can pretty much smoke in there if that's your thing. Medjool on Mission/21st isn't amazing but the roof terrace is cool. Homestead on 19th/Folsom is good too, and I've ended up in Beauty Bar on 19th/Mission a few times (gets crowded and a bit shitty later on though ime).

And Make-out room is fun!

Pop's on 24th is enjoyably dive-y, a few blocks from my friends' rad record store.

do they still have the saturday night "northern soul" thing at the elbo room? that was always big fun.

hate to admit but i always enjoyed the backyard at zeitgeist, even though it's like the portlandia funhouse-mirror version of SF

the radioactivity night's replacement is haceteria btw
my fave bar was the phone booth at 25th and south van ness, but that was partially due to proximity & comfort

also like the attic on 24th quite a bit

I miss SF bars. NYC bars are more like carefully engineered and over decorated "fun zones" and in brooklyn they're all like ex-auto shops filled with wacky furniture and pinball machines etc.

when i went it was nowhere near as corny as it looks in the video (only the DJs were dressed up) but the soundtrack for the video should give you an idea of the music

also iirc one of the DJs is markedly better than the other two

when i used to go (5+ years ago, it's a very long-running event) it was $5 apiece, looks like now it's $10 apiece but $5 if you show up in mod / swing / steampunk attire

all those corner places in the mission look exactly the same!

That soul night looks cheesy but kind of awesome.

like i said, the video sort of gives a skewed impression - when i went only a few people were wearing swinger / mod clothes and doing the bunny hop so it didn't have the corny vibe of the video
